Entering keywords from any course\u2019s title produces an expansive list of other courses across the disciplines and the schools that address the same topic from different perspectives and with different goals.<sup><a href=\"#footnotes\">(25)<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Recommendations Related to Locating Courses:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Course descriptions should be regularly updated in order to keep up with ongoing revision and refocusing. Titles of courses, too, should be more engaging and keywords should facilitate searches. Include the phrase \u201cno pre-req\u201d to further assist students seeking courses outside, or complementary to, their own disciplines; revise at least 50 percent\u00a0of these online within the next 18 months and update the 2010\u20132011 Bulletin.<\/li>\n<li>Courses with changing content using an omnibus title\u2014\u201cSelected Topics\u201d or \u201cStudies in \u2026,\u201d etc.\u2014should link to a description of the precise offering for that semester.<\/li>\n<li>Both the disciplinary and cross-disciplinary aspects of a course should be reflected in the description through the periodic but regular addition or deletion of keywords when necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Previous:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/unlock\/task-force-report\/integration-creating-paths-removing-barriers\/transfers\/\">Transfers<\/a> | <strong>Next:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/unlock\/task-force-report\/integration-creating-paths-removing-barriers\/uniting-the-arts-sciences-and-professional-schools-cluster-courses\/\">Uniting the Arts, Sciences, and Professional Schools: Cluster Courses<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"footnotes\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"small\">25. For instance, one writing course is entitled \u201cFood as Sustenance and Symbol.\u201d Typing \u201cfood\u201d into Course Search brings up examples such as CAS AR 280 \u201cFood, Diet, and Ancient People,\u201d CAS AM 367 \u201cMaterial Culture (introduction to the theory and practice of the interdisciplinary study of material culture),\u201d PDP NT 103 \u201cVegetarian Nutrition,\u201d SAR HS 201 \u201cIntroduction to Nutrition,\u201d SPH EH 765 \u201cSurvey of Environmental Health,\u201d and CAS IR 242 \u201cGlobalization and World Poverty.\u201d These range from 1- and 2-credit courses (PDP NT 103; SPH EH 765) to 4-credit. They demonstrate a twofold way to extend the learning community: the more flexible combinations of disciplines and approaches stimulate a student\u2019s application of methods and knowledge; the thematic combination collapses boundaries between the liberal arts and professional programs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another issue noted by the Task Force was the difficulty that students face in identifying courses of interest to them.
