During the winter months, concentrations are enhanced due to heating and other urban emissions.  In contrast, the summer concentrations are reduced due to vegetation photosynthesis and growth.<\/p>\n<p>The background CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration is measured at Mauna Loa, Hawaii and was an average of 394 ppm in May, 2011.
