{"id":110,"date":"2010-01-08T16:44:06","date_gmt":"2010-01-08T21:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ub\/?page_id=110"},"modified":"2025-12-04T17:11:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T22:11:05","slug":"employment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ub\/employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science programs at Boston University depend upon the quality of its part-time teaching and tutoring staff to provide instruction, academic support, and guidance to program participants during the summer and academic year programs.<\/p>\n<p><span>Boston University prohibits discrimination against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--\n\n\n<h2>Afterschool Teaching Positions<\/h2>\n\n\nBoston University Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science are now accepting applications for part-time afterschool teaching positions.\u00a0\u00a0 Teachers are responsible for planning and conducting instruction. Each Test Prep instructor is responsible for teaching one 1 hour and 50 minute section of MCAS ELA, MCAS Physics, MCAS Biology, MCAS Math, SAT Critical Reading, SAT Writing <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">or<\/span><\/b> SAT Math Test Prep, which will be once a week during the spring program. Course materials will focus on test taking techniques, practice tests, and reinforcement of content areas. Each Test Prep instructor is expected to develop and implement course curriculum, and provide written evaluations of students\u2019 performance (midterm and final) as well as attending one Saturday Parent Open House.\u00a0\u00a0 Most classes meet 4-6pm, some SAT classes meet 6-8pm.\u00a0 Classes max at 15 students.\n\n<strong>Educational requirements<\/strong>: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master's preferable, in specific academic discipline or secondary education with certification or teaching experience in appropriate content area.\n\n<strong>Required experience:<\/strong> Minimum 2 years teaching experience with high school students, strong teaching skills, demonstrated understanding of the needs of disadvantaged youth, ability to respond to student learning needs with innovative ideas and approaches to instruction, and excellent interpersonal skills.\n\n<strong>Compensation:<\/strong>\u00a0 $23 an hour, plus prep-time. During the summer, residential and nonresidential positions are available. \u00a0Summer<br \/>\nTutors work full time; it is generally not possible to take classes or hold another job while<br \/>\nworking as a summer tutor.<br \/>\nDuring the academic year tutors may work between 2 and 4 days per week. The academic year<br \/>\nprogram operates from 4-8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and from 4-6 p.m. on Thursdays<br \/>\n(spring only), and 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Fridays*.<br \/>\n*The UB tutoring schedule and delivery model will be determined in relation to Boston Public<br \/>\nSchool, Chelsea Public School, and Boston University stipulations. Up-to-date schedule<br \/>\ninformation will be shared with candidates during their interview and the tutoring staff as it<br \/>\nbecomes available. Hired tutors will be sent a survey to indicate their available shift hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>Educational Requirements:<\/strong> A high school diploma and at least a 2nd year college student. Two<br \/>\nyears of undergraduate coursework are required for summer positions.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nRequired Experience:<\/strong>1-2 years as an academic tutor or summer camp counselor, demonstrated<br \/>\nleadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of the needs of a diverse<br \/>\nurban youth population.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nCompensation:<\/strong> Tutors are paid $16.75\/hour. The dormitory supervisor also supervises the residential staff and program tutors, who are primarily undergraduate students, and serves as a liaison between the Upward Bound staff and staff from Boston University&#8217;s Office of Residence Life. The dormitory supervisor also helps with delivering tutor training.<\/p>\n<p>The dormitory supervisor is responsible for enforcing program policies and, in conjunction with the Office of Residence Life, responding to medical and non-medical emergencies. The dormitory<br \/>\nsupervisor also coordinates evening tutorials and recreational activities for program participants. This is an eight week position which includes the week prior to and after the summer program. The Wellness coordinator also co-coordinates recreational and Wellness activities for program participants.<br \/>\nThe Wellness Coordinator is responsible for enforcing program policies, communicating with families, and maintaining accurate records. This position also helps with delivering staff training the week prior to the six-week summer program and intermittent trainings as needed.<\/p>\n<p>The Wellness Coordinator provides supervision during program activities and serves as a liaison between the Upward Bound staff, and staff from community organizations and Boston University Health Services.
