Tips for commuting during the MBTA shutdown (8/19 – 9-18)

The upcoming shutdowns on the MBTA Orange and Green Lines between 8/19 and 9/18 are likely to severely impact Boston-area commuters — even those who do not use the MBTA.

Here are a few things to know during the month-long shutdown:

  1. The MBTA’s “A Rider’s Guide to Planning Ahead” outlines what to expect, including alternate route options. Please review it carefully.
  2. Subway lines aren’t the only thing changing. Street traffic patterns may change in some areas in order to accommodate MBTA shuttle buses that will replace subway service.
  3. Assume that driving will take longer than usual. If you must drive, leave early and expect traffic congestion and fuller-than-usual parking facilities on campus. Avoid peak hours if possible.
  4. Some folks who usually take the T may find that Commuter Rail is a better option. Trips in Zone 1A, 1, and 2 will be “effectively free” during the shutdown.
  5. We’re here to help. Fill out a Personalized Commuting Assistance form and Parking & Transportation Services staff will respond with personalized recommendations for your commute.
  6. Don’t forget about the BU Shuttle. The 1BU line connects to two subway stops: Hynes Convention Center (Green B, C, D) and Massachusetts Ave (Orange Line, which will be served by shuttles during the shutdown). Note: masks are required on the shuttle.
  7. Now is a good time to try out Bluebikes — our local bike share system. The City of Boston is providing FREE 30-day Bluebikes memberships. For help planning a Bluebikes commute, just fill out a Personalized Commuting Assistance form.
