Keith Vincent is a translator and scholar of Japanese and Comparative Literature and Women&#8217;s, Gender, &amp; Sexuality Studies.<\/p>\n<p>His translation of Okamoto Kanoko\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Riot-Goldfish-Hesperus-Worldwide\/dp\/1843918528?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1465331765&amp;ref_=sr_1_5&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-5\"><em>A Riot of Goldfish\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(Hesperus Press,\u00a0 2010) won the 2011 U.S. Japan Friendship Commission Prize for the\u00a0 Translation of Japanese Literature, and his translation of Tanizaki Jun\u2019ichir\u014d\u2019s novella\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Devils-Daylight-Junichiro-Tanizaki\/dp\/0811224910?ie=UTF8&amp;keywords=devils%20in%20daylight&amp;qid=1465332001&amp;ref_=sr_1_4&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-4\"><em>Devils in Daylight\u00a0<\/em><\/a>was shortlisted for the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize in 2018. He has translated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/5111484\/The_Japanese_Woman_Classic_Essays_by_Japanese_Feminists\">classic essays<\/a> by Japanese feminists into English and co-edited one of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.jp\/\u73fe\u4ee3\u601d\u60f31997\u5e745\u6708\u81e8\u6642\u5897\u520a\u53f7-\u7dcf\u7279\u96c6-\u30ec\u30ba\u30d3\u30a2\u30f3\uff0f\u30b2\u30a4\u30fb\u30b9\u30bf\u30c7\u30a3\u30fc\u30ba\/dp\/4791710177\">anthologies<\/a> of US queer theory into Japanese. His abridged translation of Sei Sh\u014dnagon&#8217;s <em>Pillow Book\u00a0<\/em>is available as an audiobook on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alxr.com\/stories\/the-pillow-book\">Alexander<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently completing<em>\u00a0<\/em>a biography of the haiku poet Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) told through translations of dozens of Shiki\u2019s haiku with close readings of the poems in the context of Shiki\u2019s life and work. Other current projects include <a href=\"http:\/\/genjipoems.org\">genjipoems.org<\/a>, a collaborative database created with his students of five very different English translations of all 795 poems appearing in Lady Murasaki&#8217;s thousand-year-old novel <em>The Tale of Genji.\u00a0<\/em>See recent press on this project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/genji-poems-online\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Forthcoming from Tuttle Publishing are a retranslation of\u00a0 Tanizaki Jun&#8217;ichir\u014d&#8217;s masterful novella &#8220;Portrait of Shunkin&#8221; under the new English title, &#8220;From the Life of Shunkin,&#8221;\u3000\u300c\u6625\u7434\u6284\u300dand the previously untranslated novel fragment, &#8220;A Record of Cruelty&#8221; (\u300c\u6b8b\u8650\u8a18\u300d). Currently, he is at work on a retranslation of Natsume S\u014dseki&#8217;s 1915 novel <em>Michikusa. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Professor Vincent taught the BU Translation Seminar in 2011 and again in 2024.
