Professor of English
Karl Kirchwey has translated poetry from French, Italian, German and Spanish. His translation of Paul Verlaine’s first book, the Poèmes saturniens, appeared as Poems Under Saturn (Princeton University Press, 2011). His book More Honor in Betrayal: Selected Poems of Giovanni Giudici, 1965-1999 is forthcoming from Opuntia/Agincourt Press in 2026. He has also translated poems by Italian poet Giorgio Vigolo (1894-1983). His interests in translation include adaptations by contemporary English-language poets of ancient Greek and Roman drama. He has published seven books of poetry, including most recently Stumbling Blocks: Roman Poems (Northwestern University Press, 2017), and edited the Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets anthology Poems of Rome (2018). His eighth book, Good Apothecary, is forthcoming in the spring of 2027. He is Professor of English and Creative Writing, and taught the Translation Seminar in 2016 and (with Professor Anna Elliott) in 2023. He is currently Director of Creative Writing in the College of Arts and Sciences.
