There are 3 comments on Job Hunting? Dos and Don’ts for Negotiating Salary

  1. Why would a woman want to mention when she helps around the office? Women are not here to manage parties order pencils or do other office “housework”. That does not show that we are more valuable.

    1. I totally agree, Lori! Howley isn’t saying that women SHOULD take on these tasks; rather, she’s saying that (for better or worse), women TEND to take on office “housework,” and if we do this unseen (and often unappreciated) work, then we should factor it into our negotiations for higher salaries. We can have a whole separate article about why women take on this type of work around the office and whether it bolsters or hurts our careers!

  2. It doesn t matter if you re working out a new job offer, or you re currently employed and want to climb echelons. Negotiating your salary — or working on getting a raise — is healthy and it helps set expectations for the future, for both you and your employer. It s no secret that a happy employee will perform better.
