  1. What a lovely tribute!!! He lived two blocks away where I reside in the Back Bay. Had no idea he had passed away. On occasions I would run into him and his wife. Like himself I use to play the flute. He was a wonderful caring individual!! Always enjoyed seeing him pop in at the Music Library (Mugar) where I am employed. He will be greatly missed.

  2. I recently wrote to James with a Queen Anne research query, not knowing that he was ill, and – though it was the last week of his life – his irrepressible intellectual curiosity and kindness was such that he still looked something up and sent me a lead. That says it all.
In admiration and gratitude for his meticulous work and breadth of knowledge,
    Ophelia Field, London
