  1. BU administrators, like their counterparts at other academic institutions, really need to ‘act like the adult in the room’ and root out bad behavior when it appears like it’s getting ready to present and stop being such wimps about things! This shouldn’t be that hard, or take much, if any, oxygen from the room – it’s a headline in search of a genuine problem!

The author cited two instances on the BU campus, both of which likely presented as potential problems waiting to happen long BEFORE they happened … AND both were YEARS ago (and simple laws of statistics suggest that with 25,000 young people as a population in close quarters, there will ALWAYS be some sort of ‘event’ every year or so – it’s just simple math and probability).

Doesn’t BU require a faculty advisor to stand with each new Club application, and then forward, and aren’t these faculty members adults? Isn’t there already a couple of mechanisms in place to trap/root out issues before they manifest … don’t you know that a frat is on a bad path BEFORE it goes DEFCON – 5? Exactly how many complainants are there ON THE BU CAMPUS who want to join into these male only/female only Clubs – cause if it’s one or two, and not fifty or fifty two (only hypothetical and not meant to suggest a proper number, just a quick suggestion of a materiality/immaterial standard), then IS THERE really an issue at all? If the university oversight is genuine oversight, shouldn’t it be able to identify a potential problem BEFORE it occurs – and if the university is worthy of the word, shouldn’t it also recognize that sometimes ‘accidents’ occur and then to deal with things as accidents when they happen (what’s next, requiring ALL students to walk to/from class wearing helmets, elbow and wrist guards cause they may bump into a parked car)?

Back in ‘my day’ BU used Resident Assistants on each floor of the dorms in the role of ‘adult in the room’ (albeit a young adult, but an adult there to manage down the stupidity of youth before it became a larger problem) …. bad things CAN happen and sometimes they actually DO happen .. don’t be afraid of these things, but make sure you’re always learning about the what’s/why’s/how’s etc etc, so that you can be better adults.

You could argue that perhaps we’re in a time that calls for MORE of these sorts of exclusive Clubs vs LESS as men and women appear to need MORE guidance as to coexistence vs LESS …

And to close, why would any university argue for LESS freedoms vs MORE … why always looking to restrict options vs expand them? Don’t fall for this ‘tail wagging a dog’ nonsense. Be the sort of institution that teaches young people to be better citizens. Act like the adult and call out bad behaviors (and this is the REAL bad behaviors vs the silliness of the ‘politically correct – everyone should play or nobody should play’ few) when you see them beginning to manifest and cut the drama.

  2. If you researched the SDT hazing incident, you would find that AEPi was also involved, actually the main player in the incident. AEPi is also not a BU recognized fraternity. Maybe you should have gotten a quote from an SDT sister instead of throwing them under the bus and then shining the light on AEPi…

  3. Pretty impressive to me that a BU article with regards to the recent happenings at Harvard spends more than half the article bringing up old ghosts with regards to frat and sorority life at BU.

Hey heres an idea! you wanna attack greek life? Have the guys to actually say something about it instead of hiding it behind some thinly veiled article with regards to a lawsuit about same sex clubs. Feel free to debate and discuss what BU should do with greek life, but definitely don’t bring Tony’s name into this, have some decency.

  4. How is it that an article about inclusivity in single-sex clubs and organizations does not bring up one of the most pressing concerns about these, which is the issue of whether or not trans, non-binary, or intersex individuals are allowed to participate if they so choose? This is a complex issue that does not have an easy answer, but to not even address it in the article is negligent. If we want to have a real discussion about this issue, we need to address whether or not someone who feels they belong in a particular organization is allowed to join.

  5. Otter:
    Point of parliamentary procedure!
    Hoover:
Don’t screw around, they’re serious this time!
    Otter:
    Take it easy, I’m pre-law.
    Boon:
    I thought you were pre-med.
    Otter:
    What’s the difference?
    Otter:
Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests – we did.
    Otter:
But you can’t hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg – isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we’re not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
