BU Beats: Music That’s Boston-Inspired

Sophie Sachar (COM’20) shares playlist of Boston bands and memories

2

Sophie Sachar’s life is steeped in music. She started working for WTBU’s zine The Beat during her first semester at BU, and by her third semester she had her own radio show. These days, Sachar (COM’20) is editor-in-chief of The Beat and a DJ on the WTBU weekly show Goose Wives, which she cohosts with friends Abby Lebet (CAS’20, COM’20), Paul Stokes (CAS’20), and Sloane Miller (CAS’20). She also completed an internship this past summer with the 9:30 Club, a Washington, D.C., nightclub and concert venue.

We asked Sachar to share some of her favorite songs. The Spotify playlist she came back with is Boston-inspired, comprising songs largely by local bands, including older acts like ’70s proto-punk/art rock outfit the Modern Lovers as well as current day indie artists like Sidney Gish, Horse Jumper of Love, and the psych pop four-piece Crumb.

But the list is also a trip down memory lane for Sachar, a reminder of special locales—(listening to “Cool and Refreshing” by Florist while walking along the Esplanade in the early fall), specific concerts (a stand-out by Frankie Cosmos in Cambridge last year), and moments in time: she recalls listening to the Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place” a lot when she came to BU and identifies it with the start of freshman year. ).

Hear Sachar and cohosts on Goose Wives on WTBU Friday’s from 2 to 4 pm. Listen to her playlist, “Sophie’s Boston Beat,” below.
