Blizzard Closes Boston University on Tuesday
Up to 18 inches of snow may fall around greater Boston
As the third nor’easter in two weeks threatens to drop as much as 18 inches of snow on greater Boston, University administrators have decided to close the University on Tuesday, March 13. The closure begins at 6 am. All scheduled academic and administrative activities (i.e., classes, seminars, and meetings) have been canceled. Snow is expected to start after midnight and blizzard conditions are anticipated through Tuesday morning, with high winds and snow accumulating as quickly as three inches an hour. The storm is expected to end late Tuesday evening. University employees in essential services must report as scheduled. Essential services include, but are not limited to, Boston University Police, Facilities Management & Planning, Dining Services, Mail Services, Student Health Services, Environmental Health & Safety, and Network Services. The city of Boston has declared a snow emergency and parking ban starting at 7 pm Monday night. BU Today will continue to monitor the storm and provide updates as necessary.
Medical Campus:
The BU Medical Campus will be closed. This includes the School of Medicine, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and its Patient Treatment Centers, and the School of Public Health. Medical, Physician Assistant, and Graduate Medical Sciences students who are assigned to inpatient services or clinics are expected to be present if possible. Students must use their own discretion regarding the safety of travel to their clinical site. All students at clinical sites are responsible for contacting and following the reporting instructions of their site or clerkship director. All normal academic and administrative activities have been canceled. Employees in essential services should report as scheduled. Essential services include, but are not limited to, Public Safety, Facilities Management, Emergency Patient Treatment, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Mail Services.
Charles River Campus:
George Sherman Union: Open. Libraries: All Charles River Campus libraries will be closed. Check the library website for more information. Fitness & Recreation Center: Closed. All classes, programs, rentals, and activities hosted or sponsored by Physical Education, Recreation and Dance are canceled for the day and the Track & Tennis Center has no recreational hours. Student Health Services: Student Health Service will open at 8:30 am on Tuesday and will be able to see students with urgent or emergency concerns only. Call 617-353-3575. The office is expected to remain open until 1:30 pm. On-call services will be in place after that time. Bookstore: Barnes & Noble at Boston University will be closed. Admissions: The Admissions Reception Center will closed. All campus visits are canceled. BU Shuttle (the BUS): The BUS daytime and late night service has been canceled. Parking: Students, faculty, and staff on the Charles River Campus are urged to refrain from parking in any of the University’s outside lots so that these locations can be properly cleared and maintained. All University parking permit holders who are not parked within a covered/garaged facility should park in one of the following facilities (this includes departmental vehicles): Langsam garage; 575 Commonwealth Avenue garage; and 730 Commonwealth Avenue garage. These covered parking facilities will remain open throughout the storm. Once the campus has reopened, all vehicles should be returned to normal parking areas as soon as possible. MBTA, T, and Commuter Rail Service: The MBTA will operate on a modified schedule. Subway service on the Red, Orange, Blue, and Green Lines will have reduced service, similar to a Saturday schedule. Buses will be operating on a regular weekday schedule, but expect delays, detours, and reduced service. Commuter rail service will be operating on an extremely reduced schedule.
