The Ins and Outs of Move-in 2017

Everything you need to know about street closures, parking restrictions, and more

90

BU’s annual student Move-in week is a good news/annoying news affair this year. Annoying first: lingering cleanup from the Commonwealth Avenue bridge replacement, which ended earlier this month, and ongoing construction of new bicycle lanes on Comm Ave could spell “minor delays” for commuters, warns Lieutenant Robert Casey of the Boston University Police Department.

The good news? “The Red Sox will be out of town until Labor Day,” September 4, says Marc Robillard, executive director for auxiliary services, sparing most families from having to joust with baseball-related traffic.

Casey isn’t concerned that BU families will trip over concert-goers coming for Lady Gaga, who performs at Fenway Park on Friday and Saturday, September 1 and 2, starting both nights at 6:30 p.m. Move-in activities taper off after 6 p.m., he says, so “we should have minimal traffic disruptions.”

BU expects to house 11,500 students this fall, up just slightly from last year’s total. The first 1,500 are expected to arrive Monday, August 28, Robillard says. That initial influx includes freshmen and transfer students checking in for this year’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP), the Community Service Center program that brings new students to campus one week early to participate in community service projects across the city.

Early Move-in is on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Freshman and new student Move-in is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The busiest day will be Wednesday, August 30, “when students who need to attend Orientation arrive,” says Robillard. “This is a large group of mostly international students.” Counting new and continuing Terriers, he expects more than 2,900 students that day.

A special Move-in weekend shuttle bus will run up and down Commonwealth Avenue on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., stopping at 13 locations between Kenmore Square and Agganis Arena. This is in addition to the Saturday daytime BU Shuttle (BUS), which travels between the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus.

The annual Matriculation ceremony—the official welcome for the 3,490 members of the Class of 2021—is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, at Agganis Arena, preceded by a procession along Comm Ave by freshmen. The procession kicks off at 1 p.m. from students’ residence halls.

During Move-in week, the BU Police will reroute traffic at specific spots across campus, and officers will be on hand to direct drivers during the following changes:

Bay State Road (Beacon Street to Granby Street)

From Wednesday, August 30, through Monday, September 4, Bay State Road will be closed to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Only residents, delivery trucks, and students moving in to BU will be allowed access.

700 Commonwealth Ave. (Warren Towers)

To keep the bicycle lane open, no vehicles are allowed to unload in front of Warren Towers. Access will be through the Warren Towers garage only, which is accessible off of Hinsdale Street. There will be limited parking for faculty and staff parking permit holders from Monday, August 28, through Sunday, September 3.

South Campus

On August 28, and from Wednesday, August 30, through Monday, September 4, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Buswell Street will be converted to one-way, going west from Park Drive to St. Mary’s Street, and going east from Park Drive to Mountfort Street.

BU Bridge and University Road

On Sunday, September 3, the BU Bridge and University Road will be closed for a period of time between 1 and 2 p.m. to accommodate the thousands of freshmen proceeding from East Campus to Agganis Arena for Matriculation.

Harry Agganis Way and Buick Street

From Saturday, September 2, through Monday, September 4, Student Village residents moving into 33 Harry Agganis Way or 10 Buick St. will be directed to park in the Agganis Arena garage.

On Sunday, September 3, Harry Agganis Way and Buick Street will be closed from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for Matriculation. There will be no vehicle access for students moving into 33 Harry Agganis Way and 10 Buick St. during that time.

The Agganis Arena C-2 lot (the lower outdoor service lot) will be closed to faculty and staff parking permit holders Monday, August 28, through Sunday, September 3.

Babcock Street

On Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3, West Campus students moving into Claflin, Sleeper, and Rich Halls will be directed to park in the Langsam Garage and outer lot; the garage entrance is on Gardner Street. Students moving into 1019 Commonwealth Avenue can park in the garage or in metered spaces.

The Langsam Garage and outer lot will have limited spaces for faculty and staff parking permit holders from Monday, August 28, through Sunday, September 3.

Where should students moving into 1047 commonwealth avenue park their cars?

  • Marc on 08.28.2017 at 7:53 am

    Hello Rebecca,

You can unload in the front of the building and then park in the Langsam Garage directly behind the building.

Where should students moving into 575 Comm Ave unload / park their cars?

      • Marc on 08.28.2017 at 1:13 pm

Thank you for your question Gisel. Go directly to 575 Commonwealth Avenue. There is parking all around and beneath the building.

You should include a severe warning that trucks should never go onto Storrow Drive for any reason, at any time! Every year, there are at least a few U-Hauls and moving vans that are destroyed when they hit the very low clearance bridges. With more people relying on apps to tell them which way to go and suggesting alternative routes, the drivers really need to stick to the main roads, even if traffic is heavy.

    • Tom on 08.28.2017 at 11:08 am

      It is called getting “storrowed”.

      • RebeccaW on 08.28.2017 at 8:20 pm

What is the clearance on the Agganis garage? We’ll probably need our Thule top to get all our daughter’s gear to STUVI!

        • Timothy Dunn on 08.29.2017 at 7:12 am

Move in parking is being accommodate in the C-2 Lot which is a surface lot next to the Agganis Arena Garage. The C-2 Lot is being reserved exclusively for move in purposes therefore no need to worry about the clearance.

  • Filipe on 08.28.2017 at 11:35 am

If I were to take a taxi to the Warren towers, where should I tell the taxi to park so that I can unload all my stuff and proceed to move in? Any help would be appreciated.

    • Marc on 08.28.2017 at 11:53 am

      Hi Filipe,
Have the taxi take you directly to 700 Commonwealth Avenue. The BU Police officers will direct the driver to a safe spot to unload. These safe spots are usually on Hinsdale or Cummington Streets which are the side streets directly adjacent to Warren Towers.

      All the best,

      Marc Robillard
      Executive Director, Auxiliary Services

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.28.2017 at 11:56 am

      Hello,

Please direct the driver to 700 Commonwealth Avenue. The driver will then be able to pull into the garage located under Warren Towers by taking a right on to Hinsdale Street (Starbucks on the corner) and the garage attendant will direct the driver to the third level of the garage to unload your belongings. The taxi will then be able to depart the garage after you have unloaded.

  • Dael Choi on 08.28.2017 at 11:59 am

Are we allowed to move in before 10am on Wed? Like 8-9am ish?

    • Marc on 08.28.2017 at 12:25 pm

      Hi Dael,

Check-in begins at 10 a.m. not 8 or 9 ish. Wednesday will be a very busy move-in day on campus, so an early arrival is not a bad idea even if you cannot officially check-in until 10.

  • Kimberly Steininger on 08.28.2017 at 12:21 pm

How can I gain access to Bay State Rd. to move in? Do I just have to check-in at the Towers first?

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.28.2017 at 1:14 pm

      Hi Kimberly,

A BU Police officer will be stationed at convergence of Beacon Street and Bay State Road. Simply let the officer know you are here for Move-In and the officer will allow the vehicle to proceed down Bay State.

After unloading in front of the Towers, please proceed to park your vehicle in the CAS Lot, 240 Bay State Road.

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.28.2017 at 2:04 pm

      Hi Colleen,

Please park in the garage located under Warren Towers. You can access the garage by taking a right off of Commonwealth Avenue on to Hinsdale Street (Starbucks on the corner) and the garage attendant will direct you to the third level of the garage to unload your belongings. • Kristine on 08.28.2017 at 2:47 pm

Where should we park to unload for the 826 Beacon St apartments? On Beacon or is there parking/entrance behind the building?

    • Timothy Dunn on 08.28.2017 at 3:23 pm

      Hi Kristine,

Parking meters are available for a fee along Beacon Street. You may also utilize marked Boston University Green or Orange parking spaces in the alleyway located behind 826 Beacon Street while unloading. Please be certain you are parking in the marked Green or Orange spaces as private parking spaces are located in this area as well. Any vehicle found illegally parking in a private parking space does run the risk of being towed.

After unloading, please move your vehicle to the Warren Towers Garage, 700 Commonwealth Avenue if you need long term parking after unloading.

    Hi Shari,
You should pull up in front of Myles Standish Hall, 610 Beacon Street to check-in and unload. My friend Tim Dunn in Parking and Transportation Services is suggesting that you then park in the CAS lot located at 240 Bay State Road.

    • Marc on 08.29.2017 at 7:58 am

    Thanks!

What type of laundry detergent do the machines use at Claflin? Regular or HE?

    • Marc on 08.29.2017 at 10:15 am

      Hi Christine,

Excellent question! You can us either regular or HE detergent. For HE use only a tablespoon of detergent, if you use regular detergent only a quarter of a cup is needed. People using pods should place the pod in the washer first and then add the clothes on top of the pod. This gives the pod a chance to dissolve.

  • Lisa on 08.29.2017 at 12:53 pm

Where do we unload the dorm stuff if student housing is in Claflin hall? I think we can drop the stuff and then go to Langsam Garage to park – is that right?

    • Timothy P Dunn on 08.29.2017 at 1:10 pm

      Hi Lisa,

Short term parking will be available at the parking meters purchased by the University in the area of Claflin on Babcock, Ashford, and Gardner Street to allow for short term parking to unload. You will then be able to move your vehicle to the Langsam Garage.

  • Laurie on 08.29.2017 at 2:46 pm

Hi! First, thank you so much for providing this comment section! It is super helpful! :)
My question is, if I’m moving my daughter into Sleeper, which of the 3 streets you mention above should I park on to unload before moving my car to the garage. Also, is there a time limit on how long we will be allowed to stay in the garage?
    Thank you!

    • Timothy P Dunn on 08.29.2017 at 3:11 pm

      Hi Laurie,

      You are very welcome.

The street you will be parking on will depend on how many other vehicles require parking during the time period that you arrive. BU Police and Residence Life staff will on Babcock Street to assist you and direct you to the most convenient location.

You may stay in the Langsam Garage for as long as you need to but we typically ask, if possible, for vehicles to park in the garage in two hour increments and then move to the Agganis Arena Garage, 925 Commonwealth Avenue in order to allow other families to utilize the Langsam Garage.

My Son is a Sophomore and will be arriving after hours from Michigan to move into 481-483 Commonwealth Avenue…..he has been directed to get keys from the RA…just need to know if he will be okay….since this is after hours and he is traveling alone.

Thank you for your message. Your son should go to Myles Standish Hall, 610 Beacon Street and contact the RA on duty at Myles. Myles is your son’s check-in site and the RAs will be more than happy to help him out.

Where do we park for 700 Commonwealth? We plan to arrive at about 12 pm this Saturday. What advice can you give as to what time to arrive there to avoid heavy traffic?

    • Timothy Dunn on 09.02.2017 at 10:05 am

      Hi Jose,

Please park in the garage located under Warren Towers. You can access the garage by taking a right off of Commonwealth Avenue on to Hinsdale Street (Starbucks on the corner) and the garage attendant will direct you to the third level of the garage to unload your belongings. After unloading, you may then park your vehicle in the basement or first level of the garage.

Where do we park when we attend matriculation? Is there parking at Agganis arena?

      Hi Vera,

Yes, no charge parking will be available in the Agganis Arena Garage for parents attending Matriculation.

If a student is it feeling well today, an incoming freshmen, can you come tomorrow, and are the hours are limited and end at 12, or again if the student is not feeling well, should they just come up when they feel better. Who should we give notice to as well?

    • Marc on 09.02.2017 at 10:19 am

      Hi Cheryl,

An entering freshmen may check-in tomorrow between the hours for 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. We would like all freshmen here by 12 noon so they can attended the Matriculation Ceremony. However we understand that circumstances change. Check-in will also occur on Monday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. if that is more convenient.

I hope your student is feeling better soon.

So, sophomore son moving into Danielson on Sunday; read above about unloading in front and picking up his room key in Danielson. Where is the long term parking, as we will plan to spend a few hours with him before leaving town.
    Thanks!

    • Marc on 09.03.2017 at 9:22 am

      Hi Katy,

The parking meters in and around Danielsen Hall are free on Sunday. If there are no metered spaces available you can go to the CAS Lot at 240 Bay State Road, or the lot at 575 Commonwealth Avenue.

Hello. An earlier answer stated that parking for the matriculation ceremony will be available in the Agganis Arena’s garage. Given the size of the event, is the garage likely to fill up? If so, can you recommend an alternate?
    Thank you.

    • Marc on 09.03.2017 at 9:25 am

      Hi Jon,

You should be OK with parking at the Agganis lot. Space will also be available in the Langsam lot on Gardner Street. Worst case park at Warren Towers, 700 Commonwealth Avenue and take the BU Shuttle Bus to the event.
