From Commemoration to Celebration: 2016 in Pictures

Glimpses of the year that was as we ring in a new one

From a news perspective, 2016 will be remembered for one of the most contentious, turbulent presidential elections in US history, for Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, for terrorist attacks in Nice, France, Brussels, Istanbul, and Berlin, for the devastating Zika virus outbreak, and for the deadly siege of Aleppo, Syria.

Here at BU, we saw the death of Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel (Hon.’74), the University’s Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus in the Humanities and a College of Arts & Sciences professor emeritus of philosophy and religion, a decision by BU’s full-time lecturers and instructors to unionize, the sale of the BU Theatre and the construction of a new studio theater and production facility, and authorization by the Board of Trustees to create a comprehensive Climate Action Plan.

As we turn our attention to a new year, we take a look back at 2016 as it played out on campus. We’ve pulled together nearly three dozen photos that ran as Close-ups on BU Today throughout the year. Take a look.
