There are 83 comments on POV: Donald Trump for President

  1. Right now, there are three of four MASSIVE issues for voters – and they’re very interrelated; 1. An economy that isn’t working for a large percentage of Americans … we can argue about jobs/unemployment/new realities, but the broad perception of The People at the kitchen table is that the economy stinks, companies/jobs are leaving our shores and the scales are simply too tipped against the American worker! 2. Immigration, and especially illegal immigration, is crushing the job markets and bringing an unacceptable level of crime/drugs/violence/poverty to American streets and into our communities and it’s becoming altogether FAR too random as to which city/location is next – and that’s created great unease! 3.) The average American doesn’t feel safe in their home and in their community. While statistics will show that there’s no broad reason for these concerns … people’s perceptions are their realities .. and when things start happening in Dallas or Charlotte or Fresno, Orlando or anywhereelseville USA, these no longer sound like the normal shooting galleries that as American’s we’ve sadly come to expect AND again, the refusal to identify terrorism/extremeism or its perpetrators on our soil has The People VERY upset! 4. Lastly, but maybe most importantly, there’s NO OPTIMISM out there in the country and The People NEED/CRAVE optimism … it’s what will motivate them to buy a home, start a family or a business, make a big purchase, etc etc etc … they WANT to believe that tomorrow will be better than today, but they simply can’t and seem to be refusing to accept what feels like DC peeing on their heads anymore as simple rain – they KNOW that it’s pee! The rest of the so-called ‘issues’ (as HRC wants you to believe) really don’t matter at the kitchen table of the vast majority of Americans.

Trump is an egomaniacal billionaire blowhard … but he’s one who’s largely financed himself, taken NO special interest money, has challenged the media and other power structures head on and not been broken … while I’ll completely agree with the writer, he’s said some genuinely stupid things, his opponent has done FAR worse! As a country, we NEED a guy like Trump to ‘Drain the swamp’ of all the rats and worse .. it won’t happen fast and it won’t be easy, so tenacity and unflinching nature Trump has shown will be an asset that will benefit everyone.

And remember one last thing … as a negotiator, Trump is fundamentally a real estate developer .. he’ll never ever begin a negotiation process where he’s likely to end … so the 90 ft tall southern border wall that he’s going to get Mexico to pay for will probably become a 16 ft tall solid structure that we split the cost of and actually get built in record time and under budget!

I’ll vote for real change and genuine hope … Go Trump!!

    1. “taken NO special interest money”

Completely untrue. Trump has thanked casino magnate Sharon Adelson for donating millions of dollars to help his campaign, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/10/31/adelson-pours-25-million-into-white-house-race-more-may-be-coming.html

“the 90 ft tall southern border wall that he’s going to get Mexico to pay for will probably become a 16 ft tall solid structure”

The partial border fence that already exists is taller than 16 feet in many areas. At that height, it’s probably going to be vulnerable to… ladders. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Louisville-Ladder-16-Aluminum-Ladder/34744291

    2. Some points:

      1. There’s no evidence to support the argument that immigration brings “crime/drugs/poverty to American streets.” If anything, research shows immigrants (both legal and illegal of nature) commit fewer crimes than native-born citizens.

      http://cis.org/ImmigrantCrime
      https://www.cato.org/blog/immigration-crime-what-research-says

      2. Although recently Americans’ perception of crime is up, actual crime rates have been steadily declining for the last 2 decades. Although take that first part with a grain of salt, as historically Americans are perceiving there to be less and less crime overall.
      http://www.gallup.com/poll/186308/americans-say-crime-rising.aspx

And yeah, trump is not a self-made man.

        1. That line doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a bunch of abstract concepts arranged in an arbitrary order. If you’re going to quote Star Wars, pick a good movie to quote.

  2. Hillary Clinton referred to Trump voters as deplorable — and she was right. Downtrodden people who think that a gold-furniture upper 1% person is going to help them are fools. People who flock to an ignoramus as their source of information and insight are worse than fools. People who subscribe to conspiracies and innuendo and who never go looking for facts are deplorable. Donald Trump is an egotist and elitist who can’t stand being around the people he is pandering to for votes. Moreover, Trump is a fraud: a businessman who touts his “great success”, but in reality is a pariah in the business community — someone who habitually cheats people to enrich himself, and whose business record is a long string of very costly failures. Trump is also a world-class hypocrite, pillorying Hillary for deleted emails when his businesses routinely destroyed emails and records while under investigation. A philanthropist who has donated many millions of dollars to charities? Trump won’t reveal any records substantiating his claim, and exhaustive research by the Washington Post finds no charities with such donations from Trump. Resolve and courage? After all his bravado and blustering about “building a wall and having Mexico pay for it”, he inexplicably went to Mexico and cowered before Mexico’s president, saying nothing to him about wall financing. Trump does not begin to resemble a leader.

Trump is the typical candidate running as an “outsider” — the obvious objective of the campaign: to become an insider. People who vote for him on the basis of “change” don’t care if that change is all negative; that the United States would lose all credibility in the world with a buffoon at its head; or that Trump’s mindless, erratic, thoughtless behavior could launch a horrendous multi-front war in the world. While Hillary is no paragon of virtue, she is at least knowledgeable, balanced, and competent. In an election, you vote for the better candidate: that is what someone who cares about democracy does. A protest vote for stupidity is irresponsible.

    1. I agree with whatever happened to intelligence in America. If anyone thinks that Donald trump cares about them and that he is not gonna forget about you once he has what he wants, you are going to be in for a big shock. trump is lethargic for a very frustrated culture cause he releases a lot of pent up anger but he is not the answer. Releasing anger and lashing out seldom is.

    2. Why wasn’t this comment weeded out by the moderators? I mean, isn’t referring to an entire group of people as worse than fools generally unhelpful for reasonable discourse? Like, I’m all for freedom of speech, but does anyone think that a comment chain stemming from a post like this is going anywhere productive?

      1. First of all, I think that saying, “Like, I’m all for freedom of speech…” followed with a question as to why a comment wasn’t “weeded out” shows something very integral to this election. Rights. Civil rights. Free speech rights. The right to have a different opinion. In my opinion, which I feel is supported by recorded evidence (thanks to the media), Mr. Trump has threatened to take away your freedom of speech by limiting press coverage and threatening to sue publications when they say something he doesn’t like. Trump followers jeer at, threaten, and beat up people who think differently, who ask questions, or who reveal hypocrisies. As president, a demagogue like Trump is likely to curtail more constitutional rights than just freedom of speech. What about freedom to practice your own religion? He is already singling people out by religion. He is contrary to American principles and ideals, such as, but not limited to, welcoming immigrants (we are a country made up of immigrants—”illegal” immigrants, arguably, seeing as how we violently stole our land from the indigenous people here before us).

Unless your freedom of speech has been compromised before, please don’t take it for granted. We’re all very, very lucky to have “freedom of speech” and having a comment chain that is not “weeded out” is absolutely a vital part of that.

And I’m not even getting into the POV author’s statement about “inane social issues.” For people who have had to fight for recognition and equality, including most of all Blacks, the LGBTQ community, and women (still fighting for equal pay, etc.), I would say that declaring those issues “inane” stinks of privileged and entitlement. Planned Parenthood and access to women’s health resources “inane”? Please. Then of course, we are still simply ignoring the racist, sexist, and white supremacist leanings of the Trump message. I am not sure how that reactionary theme will move the country “forward.”

          1. With Pence as VP (likely most influential VP recently according to Trump himself) and Supreme Court nominations to give… that all could very easily change.

        1. Freedom of speech doesnt apply to moderated forums. You should read on when and where your first amendment applies before you try to correct people on it.

Also, women have equal wages. They dont have equal earnings. The wage gap is a myth created by differences in choices. Why do I still have to explain this to people?

          1. Actually the amendment is pretty vague, which is good because it was made during a time in which there were no computers. Free speech does of course apply to online forums, as it does everywhere else. If there are rules stipulated as to how you can post in the forum, then those who run it have the right to take a comment down if it breaks those rules. If not, then anyone an really say whatever they want.

Right now, you’re complaining about someone commenting that those who think Trump is fighting for lower-wage Americans are fools. Yet this is all in defense of a man who called Mexicans rapists and refers to all Muslims as terrorists. Funny how that works out.

And no, the wage gap is not a myth. Women don’t just choose to work in lower paying positions, they are no less ambitious, they are no less educated or qualified. If you haven’t seen it, be thankful because you’re lucky.

    3. I agree every step of the way. The author spends more time attacking Clinton than boosting Trump, which is what most educated Trump voters do, which is ironic. The best part being, they don’t even have any evidence for any of the positive things they say he will do. He says he’ll fix ‘Murica, and they say “He didn’t say how, but it sounds good to me!” As you said, MOST Trump supporters are indeed uneducated, and quite deplorable. They are the people who miss the days you could kill someone for not looking like you without any repercussions. These are people that feel like being an a$$hole is a constitutionally protected right. These are people who think that anything but good ole country fried Christian poor white trash values are what America needs to thrive.

Don’t get me wrong, I can totally relate to anyone that says America is going in the wrong direction, and that the wealthy, people like Donald Trump, love it. After all, Trump himself was salivating at the prospect of the financial meltdown of 2008. He made himself a fortune on the misery of your average American. And these same people, the ones that lost their jobs and homes, are the ones supporting the very same man who takes pride in “firing” people and benefiting on the misery of the less fortunate. He doesn’t care about his deplorables, and they won’t let anyone tell them that. His supporters are so firm in their beliefs that even Trump himself couldn’t convince them otherwise. After all, he’d just deny what he said later on anyway.

Trump is just as much of a crony as any other Washington insider, just without the political experience. I don’t care how you feel about Hillary Clinton, but 1. she hasn’t run the country or dictated foreign policy, 2. she wasn’t responsible for 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, or Libya, 3. she won’t fire nukes “just because we have them”. Listen very closely here. Trump is an egomaniac. Trump has a massive inferiority complex. If you insult him, expect a tirade on Twitter between 1 and 3am in the morning. Confront him, and he will cower in the corner like the coward that he is. He may scream and flare his nostrils and talk a big game, but when has he ever actually stood up to anyone face to face? He’s probably terrified of his own supporters. You (the author) think he’ll play nice with world leaders that are friendly towards America, let alone our antagonists? He’ll talk a big game, meet them face to face, and he’ll bend over backwards to keep them from getting ticked off. You see, he wants those nuke launch codes so he can hide in a bunker and destroy foreign leaders who mock him, but dare they challenge him in person, don’t expect any bravado. As you said, when he faced the Mexican president, the one he said he’d “force” to pay for the wall, he never even brought it up. Why? Because he didn’t have the guts. Mexico has no interest in a war with America. What do you expect from him when he’s facing a president/dictator who would love nothing more than an excuse to kill more Americans?

Let’s not forget, also, that Trump has tanked every business opportunity he’s ever had. He loves to declare bankruptcy. He loves to put people out of jobs and stiff his workers for work they already did. What do you expect him to do with the coffers of an entire country? He’s certainly not good at keeping his businesses afloat, why would he be fine with an entire country’s economy?

Last point. Trump has an exceptionally short term memory, or at least he pretends he does. He denies everything he says, even when faced with videos and recordings of him saying them. When he meets with his lawyer teams, they always have at least two people there so Trump can’t lie. Not only that, but when nobody believes his lies, he starts with the “people are saying” nonsense to cover his lies as gossip he’s heard around the campfire. Do we need a president that can’t even be trusted to stick by anything he’s ever said? Why would he stick to his word for anything he claims he will do if he can’t be consistent, beyond being consistently dishonest. Yes, Hillary tells lies. Even the pope lies. But most people have a conscience about it, while Trump does not. He will brazenly tell anyone that what he just said, he didn’t say, even though they witnessed him say it. Imagine him with the United Nations, whom he says he would dissolve, saying one thing in a summit, then at the end saying he didn’t. He could agree to an arms deal, or a ceasefire, then the next day deny it. It doesn’t matter how high profile he is, he is never held to his word, because he’s incapable of living up to it. How would any of our allies, most of which already despise Trump, ever trust America again? Nobody wants a fearmonger, a hatemonger, a pathological liar, a cheat, a philanderer, a sexual predator, and a coward at the table with them. How could anyone take any of our allies seriously if they have this fake tanned buffoon beside them? This man is a demagogue, a fraud and a charlatan, and should be kept as far from the White House as possible.

  3. You said Trump “at worst said something that might have offended you”. Wrong. Trump at worst has broken our laws numerous times, stolen money from real estate investors, bribed public officials, cheated on his taxes, hired illegals, refused to pay employees, cheated on his wife, assaulted numerous women, walked in on a naked 15 year old, and lied about every single thing he’s ever done.

Trump’s entire live history has been a giant scam. From hiring a black listing McCarthy lawyer to dealings with mafia concrete companies in his real estate holdings Trump has proven that he thinks he’s above the law. His foundation is a scam. He was found out to have pulled off a 17 million dollar insurance fraud on hurricane damage that didn’t happen. When 9.11 happened to his city of New York instead of helping he stole money from the victims fund when he didn’t have any valid claims.

Hillary Clinton is a long way from perfect, but she has spent her entire life working in government, knows her way around, knows how government works. Trump has spend 70 years stealing money from every single person he could. You want to know what kind of person Donald Trump is? His father Fred Trump used to pay medical bills for his grandson who has a rare disease. When Fred passed away Donald cut the kid off from family money. He cut off his sick nephew from family money so he could have more for himself. He’s not getting my vote, or the vote of anyone who knows what kind of person he is.

    1. “cheated on his taxes” = legally structured his assets so he pays the least he can.

“cheated on his wife” = literally has nothing to do with his abilities as president, Bill taught us that plenty.

“assaulted numerous women” = 40 year old completely unfounded claims with 0 evidence that the NYT decided to push on their front page.

“Walked in on a naked 15 year old” = this is beyond silly.

“lied about every single thing he’s ever done” = do you know what a hyperbole is?

You talk a lot about things Trump may or may not have done but you skipped over the rich and wonderful history of Hillary.

You mention his foundation is corrupt but completely neglect to say anything about the Clinton Foundation which is the literal embodiment of the word. They’ve accepted donations from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both which Hillary herself has stated are funding ISIS and other terrorist groups. 96% of her own donations went to the foundation. After donating over $200,000, a commodities broker was put on an intelligence advisory board with no background whatsoever in the subject.

She does not care nor understand what she did in having a private server and sharing classified documents, which unauthorized lawyers had access to. There is evidence foreign actors attacked her server. She lied again and again about being at fault in the email server case, and then even again once Comey’s statement was released. The state department actually tried to pressure the FBI into letting her off, as they did successfully.

Her campaign is racist(http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/oct/12/hillary-clinton-campaigns-wikileaks-emails-reveal-/) and made up of corrupt leaders. And yes, her campaign did push the Obama muslim narrative in 2008. Her campaign also very likely illegally accepted foreign donations.

She is just as much in bed with Wallstreet as the next establishment politician. She is for the TPP. She pushed against citizens united under the guise that she cares about money in politics, which she has benefitted greatly from, so that she could prevent a negative political opinion of her from being disseminated. You talk a lot about things that matter very little to whether or not a president will perform well- on the real political issues that actually matter, whos stances are better for America? I did not vote for Trump, but that’s because I’ve already been convinced-your reply is entirely unconvincing.

      1. Bob, he admitted to walking in on under aged girls whom were basically naked. It’s not silly, it’s a fact. He said he’s allowed to because he runs the pageants.

  4. “A prince who abuses his own servants, will become a king who rapes his own people.”
You have only to look at Trump’s record toward his employees, many dozen women who have worked with him, the investors whose money he recklessly squandered (and then used to justify not paying taxes)- this man has never worked to make anyone’s life better except his own. Clinton is not, to my mind, the ideal candidate I want, but at this point it’s her or the unacceptable alternative.

    1. Totally unsubstantiated. Trump is a model employer who pays his taxes as required, including state tax, payroll tax, city tax, corporate tax etc. Clinton has never had to do this. Indeed her corrupt non-profit tax exempt foundation helps funnel reward money to her supporters while spending less than 5.7% percent on charity(2014).

      1. Wow. I bet Trump paid you to say this. Or you are Trump pretending to be someone else. Trump hasn’t paid taxes since the 90’s, and he says it makes him “smart”. He games the system. That doesn’t make him a model anything, except a cheat. I paid more taxes making minimum wage in 1 year than he did in 20. How is that good? If the wealthy don’t pay taxes, why do we have to? And if he’s such a model employer, why have many of his workers said he refuses to pay them, including his own lawyers? Which of his defunct businesses is a shining beacon of good business? I love how you say anything about him is unsubstantiated, yet you provide no evidence to back your own assertions.

      2. I do not believe in launching unsubstantited claims for or against either of the two leasing candidates.

Regarding Donald Trump being a model employer, what proof do you have? Employers working close to him are required to sign non-disclosure agreements.

We have seen anecdotal evidence that he and his corporations use substatntial financial and legal advantage to deny playments for contracted work.

  5. Trump is the real hope and change candidate? You are possibly the most delusional author I’ve ever encountered. Isolationism, demagoguery and fear are the main pillars of the Trump candidacy. He has a terrible record of paying taxes, and does not respect the institution of democracy.

He HAS committed physical damage by assaulting 11 women! Why do we demonize others for the same exact behavior, but give Trump a pass at this? Bill Clinton will never be in elected office again because of his previous sexual scandals, but you think it’s alright to perpetuate rape culture and victim blaming through Trump?

    1. I dont really believe that story. If you make an accusation against a billionaire they’ll settle out of court and you’ll get millions, regardless of the authenticity of the claim. It seems rather convenient that these women spoke up right when he ran for president, but after the time to sue had expired. That we went from no claims whatsoever to many from decades ago is a stretch.

      1. “If you make an accusation against a billionaire they’ll settle out of court and you’ll get millions, regardless of the authenticity of the claim.”

How stupid do you think billionaires are? If the claim is inauthentic, anyone with first-class legal representation and money to burn can take it to court, knowing that they will win *and* likely get the accuser saddled with their legal costs. Unless the accusation was made privately (which these weren’t), someone with an overwhelming financial advantage has nothing to lose by taking the case to court and waiting for the accuser’s money to run out.

“It seems rather convenient that these women spoke up right when he ran for president, but after the time to sue had expired.”

Well, they didn’t speak up “right when he ran for president,” but rather directly after he denied ever committing assault on national television. But setting that aside, you claimed that accusing a billionaire is an automatic way to “get millions, regardless of the authenticity of the claim.” If that were true, why on earth would these women have waited under “after the time to sue had expired”? I’m not sure whether you think they’re trying to shake him down, or ruin his campaign.

“we went from no claims whatsoever”

Trump was sued for sexual assault in 1997. https://www.scribd.com/doc/300193678/1997-Jill-Harth-Lawsuit

        “from decades ago”
There are claims of assaults happening in 2005, 2006, 2010, and 2013. http://www.npr.org/2016/10/13/497799354/a-list-of-donald-trumps-accusers-of-inappropriate-sexual-conduct

        1. Yep, that’s exactly what they are saying. Then again, Cosby probably wouldn’t be making as much news if he was white. Trump did practically the same thing Cosby allegedly did, minus the drugs. He just goes for it, he doesn’t even wait. His own words. And he is still winning the hearts of the inhabitants of America’s armpit, and not facing any charges.

  6. I am concerned that there will only be two “POV”s when there are four main candidates running for President. I am not voting for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, I feel “unfavorably” towards both, just as much of the country does. I will be casting a vote for a candidate you are not doing a “POV” on (The third party candidates are Jill Stein and Gary Johnson).

If Clinton and Trump are the best the 2 major parties (and the American people) can do we should be looking at other sources for our leaders. My point is that as long as we do not include third parties in discussions, the chance to change to the system is reduced.

    1. Stein and Johnson will get only a few percent of the vote totals. It’s never been otherwise. People realize that if either Stein or Johnson somehow got elected there would be no member of Congress in support. Bottom line, a vote for either one might as well be written on a 3×5 card and nailed to a tree.

    2. If you want to support either Dr Stein or Governor Johnson, share your opinion and rationale here! No one is stopping you from expressing your own opinion.

  7. Trump himself contradicts many of your points. Most glaringly:

you: “He will prevent the country from getting into more needless wars and having American troops die for no reason. He will stop antagonizing potential allies and will instead work together with Russia, Iran, and Syria to take down ISIS in a unified alliance.”

Trump: “When they circle our beautiful destroyers with their little boats and they make gestures at our people that they shouldn’t be allowed to make, they will be shot out of the water,”

An act of war in international waters… How does that no qualify as “antagonizing potential allies” ?

  8. Agreed that Hillary is just a slightly more intelligent version of GWB, but…
Trump is a science denier, and this matters, more than anything. Global warming, reproductive rights, supply vs demand economics, and even cannabis, all issues where Trump refuses to accept the science/facts. You cannot make sound decisions while disregarding evidence.

    1. Trump will say he supports whatever his deplorables support, because he’s their “voice”, and he’ll say what they want to hear. Since most of them never made it to high school, that means he won’t offer anything intelligent, because his voters wouldn’t understand it anyway.

  9. What is so staggering about this toxic campaign, is the obvious fact that the GOP couldn’t find a candidate which would appeal to the middle ground.

Donald Trump is a crude, vulgar man whose knowledge of world events could be written on
the head of a pin, yet he has been put forward as the main GOP nominee for POTUS !
His mindset is closer to the likes of Gerald L.K Smith, than Lincoln.
No amount of money can disguise the fact that he has no class or intellect, yet he is
mooted as the way forward for millions of naive people who are sick of mainstream politics. Is this the best America has to offer ?
Oh, and for those comedians who use the tired chant of “Liberals/lefties who have ruined
America with their PC viewpoints.”,I don’t warm to Hillary either but she is a qualified
politician with a decent track record.
This is America 2016, not 1952.
There hasn’t been a successful Republican Party for decades now, and it’s time for them to rethink their policies, and appeal to the ordinary voter if they want to win hearts
    and minds again.
Trump isn’t the way forward, and never will be. He is a vile opportunist who will turn
    America’s dreams into dust.

“In the Space Age/The village idiot rules.” – Iggy Pop

    1. The GOP hasn’t cared about the middle ground for decades. Bipartisanship is the fastest way out of office for a republican these days. It was never meant to be like this. We can’t have a viable democracy if the two sides refuse to agree on anything, and not enough voters are willing to do anything about it.

  10. “Inane social issues which don’t even matter” – nice that you can be so dismissive of issues that affects the lives of millions.

Ban Muslims! Stop gay marriage! Ban abortion! Deport millions! These things don’t matter to anyone!

    1. Trump said ban immigration from radical muslim countries. That’s a lot different than ban Muslims. Also, deporting millions could also be rephrased as “actually enforce the laws currently on the books”

      1. He said ALL Muslims. Until “we can figure out what is going on”. You can’t put a positive spin on this. He called to ban an entire religion from entering the country. 1. that is impossible. Fake passports are easy to come by for “radical” Muslims, and religion is not listed on any travel documents. 2. It would cost a lot of money to turn back every single Muslim that enters this country, meaning extra flights, extra seats on planes, etc. 3. People can lie about their faith, and Muslims are told it is OK to for their protection. 4. They’ll just fly into Canada and sneak across that border if they really want to get in. 5. Muslims that aren’t normally extremists may become extremists to fight back at the government preventing their families from entering the country, meaning more terrorists will be created. Like I said, you can’t spin this. He said ALL Muslims. He may have talked it back a few times, but he said, on CAMERA, ALL Muslims.

    2. Exactly, “inane social issues which don’t even matter in this election” just shows how privileged the author is, to the point where gender issues, lgbt rights, and other minority rights don’t even register.

  11. I started off a trump supporter when he stood as an independent. Then when he joined ranks with the republicans and started spewing BS about trickle-down economics he lost my support. I then looked to Hillary, but when this last tidbit about the emails was reported I said to myself “you need to really look into this and understand what was uncovered within these emails.” What I learned was as Hillary states – “deplorable.” I recommend a deep dive into what Hillary represents before jumping in the bad mouthing of Trump because he said this or was “shady” in some prior business deals. I do feel he is an opportunist, a chauvinist, and an ego maniac. But what I see in Hillary is nothing but a perpetuation of the current status quo and a corrupt political system. The Clinton foundation is far more corrupt than Trump ever was or will be. What’s more important to you? Trumps taxes? Or the transcripts of Hillarys speeches and relationships with the big banks and her private email system which was in place so that federal IT personnel couldn’t have access to her communications. After all, it’s not that she had a private email server against security policies, it’s why she violated the policies in the first place, and it isn’t because she ‘didn’t know any better.’ Once again people are being led and influenced by emotions that get riled up in matters of social issues. We need to put social issues aside for a bit until we get the corruption fixed and our economy back on track. After this happens then maybe we will have a candidate that can put social issues back on track. But for now, I’m not too concerned with a woman’s right to choose, she needs to choose to have safe sex or none at all for a few years. Sorry but same goes for illegal immigrants. I’m not in favor of ripping families apart but these immigrants broke their families apart when they came here. Life is hard in other countries I get that but we also have a crisis ere at home – plenty of homeless people and people in need right here. Let’s get our affairs in order before we keep trying to save the world because we are dying right here at home and the American people are at a boiling point if you didn’t get that. Also – I recently learned that agitators were hired to obstruct Trump rallies to make him and his followers look bad. I also learned that Journalists from various media outlets were emailing HRC campaign in advance to have the articles approved and edited. This level of corruption needs to be fixed, and after finding this out through research I can’ stand by the Democratic ticket this election. For the first time in my I’m voting republican and I find that very unsettling mostly because I’m an environmentalist. But hey, HRC isn’t doing anything about the Dakota pipeline is she??

    1. “I’m voting republican and I find that very unsettling mostly because I’m an environmentalist”

If you are an environmentalist you should change your vote.

The candidate you are supporting in this comment has denied the existence of climate change, calling it a Chinese hoax, and has vowed to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. At one point he vowed to eliminate the EPA and now he plans to appoint a global warming denier to lead it. This is as bad as it gets from the perspective of the environment.

While HRC’s environmental record is not perfect (her campaign’s stance on the Dakota pipeline is one example), she accepts the reality of climate change and has vowed to respect the Paris Agreement. She has brought climate advocates into her circle and can be influenced by them.

If you are an environmentalist you will not vote for Trump. If you do vote for Trump you are not an environmentalist because you are making the most damning and dangerous choice possible from an environmental perspective.

    2. You don’t have to support Trump to not support Hillary. You don’t have to agree with Hillary to disagree with Trump. That is a terrible argument.

  12. “Clinton is everything you claim to oppose; in fact, she doesn’t disagree with George W. Bush on any discernible political position, aside from inane social issues which don’t even matter in this election.”

This is utterly disingenuous. Clinton and George W. Bush differ on climate change, healthcare, the Iran nuclear deal, gun control, tax policy, and social security privatization, just to name some of the most glaring disagreements. And if you consider same-sex marriage and abortion to be “inane social issues,” you are out of touch with supporters of both candidates.

  13. So you’re telling me that a person who has made and continues to make millions off of exploiting workers, both “illegal” and domestic will fight to get the better wages, to his company’s detriment?
A guy who uses every loophole at his disposal to avoid paying federal taxes will reform the system to his personal determent?
He will make sure jobs stay in America, considering he has used “illegal” immigrants and Chinese steel to build his hotels, again, to his companies detriment?
A guy who has openly demeaned and degraded women verbally and potentially physically will fight for things like equal pay?
The list goes on and on…

I realize that he offers seemingly easy answers and easy solutions, and that may be appealing to some, but when asked what your plan is (for virtually anything)and the response is “We have a great plan, tremendous plan for that”. Unfortunately, that is neither an answer nor solution.

How do you plan to fix the economy? Keep jobs in America, we have great plans for that. Really, really good plans.
How do you plan to solve the issue of ISIS? Knock the hell out of them. It’ll be amazing.
How do you plan to fix healthcare: We’ll replace “Obamacare”. Healthcare will be tremendous when I’m President.

If it were only that easy.

  14. This was a terrible POV. There was just nothing convincing in it. As usual the author seems convinced that Trump can “make America great again” fix all of the “unfair” trade agreements NAFTA, and stop jobs being outsourced out of America. All of that sounds great! But he’s never offered a single concrete step that could get us there. You can’t just “rip up” trade deals it just won’t happen. And military strategy is far more complex than “bombing the **** out of them”. I think every single Democrat in Congress will be opposed to any piece of Legislation put forward by Trump not to mention much of his own party who he has continued to alienate over the course of the election. So I doubt that he can “fix” anything.

  15. I sincerely hope that BU students who read this are smart enough to know the economic policies the author mentioned that Trump proposes are absolute trash.
Furthermore, there is a logical fallacy behind her claim that essentially Clinton did much worst as secretary of state she had done real physical damage as opposed to Trump’s harmless style and rhetoric. First of all, Clinton is the secretary of state of the US, so she has the capability in the first place to have that much power so that her actions’ consequence might be people’s lives. As secretary of state of one of the most powerful countries, of course there will be blood on her hands. Whereas Trump never had the opportunity to be responsible for many people’s lives.

  16. 1) Clinton’s difference from Trump on social issues does matter, but the author is right to point out that other parts of politics are more important than this election.
    2) To assume that Trump will change the campaign finance system and Clinton won’t is silly; neither of them will reform the campaign finance system. Both have benefited from it in the past (Trump as a donor and Clinton as a candidate).
    3) Clinton is the status-quo candidate, but that doesn’t mean the alternative is better. Not all movement away from the status-quo is progress.
    4) To claim Trump wants to increase workers’ rights is ridiculous. He’s an opponent of a minimum wage increase, an opponent of environmental regulation (which insure the water where workers live is clean from the waste their place of employment produces), and he opposes the concept of healthcare-as-a-right, which liberates workers to change jobs without fear of being unable to pay for their medical bills. I could go on.
    5) Trump’s foreign policy is actually less-hawkish than HRC’s in regards to the Syrian issue, but this position is the exception to the rule. Trump has advocated for an end to the commitment to Nuclear anti-proliferation and has threatened and harassed nations within our hemisphere in a public way that is almost unprecedented.
    6) All of the points above don’t discredit the fact that Hillary Clinton IS a corrupt, war-hawk, status-quo, neoliberal politician. The rightist resurgence that will follow her election will not make her presidency any easier for leftists to swallow, especially for those of us who believe a leftist resurgency would follow the election of Donald Trump. The real question, for me, is: Would we rather go through 4 years of pain for the chance at a candidate who will be a true champion for our generation and the disenfranchised, or would we rather play it safe and accept likely 8 more years of the neoliberal paradigm in order to avoid a quasi-fascist administration?

  17. Both candidates are “DEPLORABLE!”. (How did we get to this “place” in our Nation?) I am writing in “Bernie Sanders…”?) I’d like to say I am doing this in the “HOPE” that whomever is elected, will — at the very least — be influenced by Bernie’s message, if even just a “bit….”

  18. Jeeze there is much stupidity in this op-Ed. You spoke about Citizens United and how Hillary won’t fight to change it but you’re voting for Trump, a guy who wants to elect the same kind of Supreme Court Justices that ruled Citizens United as constitutional in the first place? You Trump supporters live in an alternate reality.

  19. So literally to pick Trump over Clinton, one must a) somehow buy into his claims that he will be able to solve problems without him offering any specifics as to how he will do so, b) overlook the fact that he is a TERRIBLE businessman and so does not bring any skill or capacity to the role of president, and c) not care that Trump did all of the following: called Mexicans rapists, claimed the president was born in Kenya, proposed banning an entire religion from entering the US, mocked a disabled reporter, said John McCain wasn’t a war hero because he was captured, attacked the parents of a fallen soldier, bragged about committing sexual assault, was accused by 12 women of committing sexual assault, said some of those women weren’t attractive for him to sexually assault, said more countries should get nukes, said that he would force the military to commit war crimes, said a judge was biased because his parents were Mexicans, said women should be punished for having abortions, incited violence at his rallies, called global warming a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese, called for his opponent to be jailed, declared bankruptcy six times, bragged about not paying income taxes, stiffed his contractors and employees, lost a billion dollars in one year, scammed customers at his fake university, bought a six-foot-tall painting of himself with money from his fake foundation, has a trial for fraud coming up in November, insulted an opponent’s looks, insulted an opponent’s wife’s looks, and — last but not least — bragged about grabbing women by the pussy and apparently really did do so on multiple occasions.

  20. Trump has a history of flip-flopping on his opinion to appease what he believes the the majority opinion of his consistency believes. For example, he is very quick to talk poorly of politicians who do not agree with him then on-the-record will praise them if they start to support him. He also reversed his views on a woman’s right to choose and DC Statehood. It seems like he is only saying what he thinks his consistency wants to hear.

This brings me to my question…
You list a series of changes and initiatives you are so confident Trump will succeed in doing, but how do you know he will actually commit to these promises when he seems so unbound to his previous statements?

It seems entirely possible that if elected, Trump would merely revert to what he thought was best and not necessarily consider the opinions and values of those who got him elected.

I have no agenda here, I am curious in your opinion on this observation.

    1. Give Trump four years. If it works keep him for another four. Right now a change is needed. That’s why POTUS is term limited. IMO that should be extended to all politicians.

    2. I think to some degree that’s a question we face with every politician. So far, I can’t think of a single one that has not flip flopped on at least 50% of the issues they are presented with. So, in that sense, I think we need to consider just who has a greater obligation to the people that are electing him/her to make this point go one way or the other. The problem is….neither of them have any obligation. If Hillary is elected and turns on everything she’s said…she’s already rich and her current email situation will probably never get her office ever again anyway. If Trump is elected, he’s also rich and has casinos providing a continuous stream of income, so he could retire from politics and have no issues either. With that in mind, I think the problem is with the system in general, in which it seems only people who are fabulously wealthy even have a shot at the white house, so nobody running with any reasonable chance of winning ends up having any real obligation.

The summary of the effect, in my opinion, is just that I don’t know if the issue matters because none of your choices fix it.

  21. This election decision is not difficult to make. It’s all about who is more qualified and who has the most experience. It’s that simple folks. We have one choice between two candidates. Please ask yourself this; who would you rather have as the person who has the nuclear codes, and could make a potentially deadly decision to the entire planet? This is a serious matter, it’s not about silly things like email servers, and what someone said to another person about women.

There is no question as to who has the most experience and who is most qualified. It is very clear if you are honest with yourself. I don’t think it’s necessary to even say her name.

  22. It’s one thing to get excited about an ‘anti-establishment candidate’ but to think of how he became popular in the first place – by insulting his opponents with childish name-calling and being outright offensive to so many groups of people – I don’t see how anyone could take pride in supporting him. You should be ashamed, in fact Clinton isn’t baggage free but at least she acts like an adult and knows her stuff. Vote Clinton.

  23. Trump is a con man in a league with Ponzi and Madoff. His whole life is a con. Con men make the marks believe and it sure happened here. His court case for 13 yo rape is coming up along with one for the scam Trump University, which is brought under RICO,the “Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization” statute. RICO is very powerful, it brought down the Mafia, and I hope it will do the same for the corrupt Trump organization. Some “fresh air”.

  24. I appreciate the POV articles. I commend every author because it takes courage to voice your opinion in something so very controversial. I will just give a personal POV that so many people never even bother to look at or listen to those living it. Please consider all the small businesses in this country & the family businesses that have been hurting. Nothing has gotten better , infact things have become worse. I believe most of these people need to vote with their pocketbooks for the time being because it will be the only we we can survive. We don’t have the luxury to work for all of these big companies & receive benefits like health, dental, vacation , & sick days. Things are not good for the Mom & Pop restaurants, gas stations, flower shops, handy man, painter etc….When we are working our hardest to support our family & extended family , yes we must vote with our pocketbooks. Morality & social issues must take a backseat right now ( both candidates are included ). Good Luck Everyone!

  25. That this author imagines a Trump administration offering the working men and women of our country “a breath of fresh air” nearly caused me to laugh out loud. How foolish do you imagine your audience to be? I was raised in trailer house along a dusty dirt road and never in a million years would I trust a man like Donald J Trump to have my family’s interests at heart. There are no winners with a Trump victory. I imagine, sadly, his core constituency of uneducated white working class voters might be the demographic most adversely affected by this bigoted cheat. The irony of an imagined “breath of fresh air” for the working class coming from a kid attending a $50,000 per year private college has left me dumbfounded…

  26. I must commend you on a very well written article, and for your persistence in trying to convince many that Donald J. Trump would be of any benefit to any citizen of this country. I found most disturbing the comments made about “illegal immigrants”, for everyone knows that these “less-skilled” and “less qualified” individuals not only increase the supply of labor in the country, but their presence in the country also increases the demand for labor. In addition, the majority of undocumented immigrants working in the U.S. work jobs that require and incredible amount of labor and toil, jobs that simply don’t appeal to many American citizens.

  27. It is regrettable to see a young person who is clearly misled by Trump’s positioning and who, unfortunately, has little grasp of the issues at hand.

While I mostly agree with the critique of Hillary and her stance on quite a lot of issues, indeed she embodies the establishment and the status-quo to a large extent (but not entirely!). I’ll briefly touch here on the major flaws of Trump’s positions ( although he changes them so much you really cannot say what he’ll actually do if, God forbid, he’s elected):

    – Trump plays with basic populist feelings and concepts: protectionism (against Nafta, other trade agreements, etc) under the false pretense that this will ‘save’ America’s jobs, essentially this is the opposition against globalization, quite a lot of people feel and actually are left behind as they have to compete whether they like it or not on a global scale in today’s more and more intertwined world; anti-immigration rhetoric (again that same anti-globalization stance), though Trump recently changed yet again his position – now he claims he is for the introduction a merit based immigration system to have more people coming to the USA legitimately; isolationism (engaging less in World affairs, changing, at least verbally the basic concepts of US Foreign policy, claiming he might not honor NATO’s commitments, unwillingness to engage in Syria, not opposing a much more assertive Russia on the global arena, demonstrating less willingness to protect traditional US allies, etc

    – As a person Trump is not reliable, he is a fraud ( to use Mitt Romney’s words – Republican’s previous candidate for president – find his critique of Trump, every word of it is right on); he has not treated fairly his workers ( working on his buildings); he has not paid any taxes for years; he’s not published any of his tax records ( running against a long term tradition of candidates for presidents); has filed for bankruptcy several times; has defrauded students at his so-called Trump Academy, etc, etc. I’m not mentioning anything about his treatment of women, etc, personal characteristics.

  28. Points:
    —He is not qualified
—He has had multiple wives and the latter one has posed for nudie magazines. Republicans are all about families, marriage, against abortions, etc. Yet here we have someone who’s wife we have seen naked. If Michelle Obama or Nancy Reagan or the Queen of England… wait all three are too high class for that. You are telling me him and his blended family would Represent the United States well? Didn’t think so.
—-Openly racist organizations support him. ISIS wants him elected because they know he will give them every reason to attack. http://time.com/4480945/isis-donald-trump/
—Make America Great Again refers to what time period? The 90s? That was when Clinton was in office and it still was not Great. Before that and we had racism and slavery and jim crow when he and his father would discriminate on who could come into their apartments- not the universal color of money but skin- which NO ONE can change (no matter how much plastic surgery)
—-He is a part of the elite and does not pay taxes fairly. What makes you think he wants to change that system which keeps him wealthy?
—-He has too many business dealings with the same people he wants to discriminate against
—-He avoided the draft like the plague and then told PTSD sufferers they weren’t strong enough.
—-He lies too many times. OMG there are TOO many facts where he has lied that I couldnt list them here without wasting hours on a man that does not deserve the time of day
—-The blessing in disguise is that now I know who is smart about politics and running a country and who isn’t, just based on their vote for Trump. I wish more people would open up and let me know they vote for him, so that the alienation can begin and we have a healthy understanding of who seriously would vote for a man with no experience and multiple failures and ideals that would take us back 50-1000’s of years socially as a country.

  29. AS BERNIE SANDERS HAS SAID MANY TIMES – “TRUMP IS A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR”, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN DO IS WORK TO DEFEAT HIM. The man has gone bankrupt 4 times, not paid vendors, has multiple law suits against him, demeans women, and created an environment of hate and divisiveness. If you look carefully at his policies, he represents the same Republican trickle-down economics that almost ran this country into the ground. He also calls Global Warming a hoax.

  30. I am curious how this author feels about this “thought” piece and her November vote today. Gabrielle, could you please let us all know how you think he’s working out.
