There are 5 comments on POV: 75 Years Later, Attack on Pearl Harbor Offers Lessons

  1. This was by no means an enjoyable or informative read. It’s as if it was written to impress Instead of inform. Completely over embellished with its choice of words and parenthesis, it offers little connection to its readers.

    1. I agreed and remember the victors write the history. This is a POV by 1 faculty member. Regardless many believe that history has a way of repeating itself.

  2. I agree with Gman. Way too much purple prose for what should be an expository piece. “[T]hey waged a war sharp and cruel that brought down upon Japan a rain of fire curtaining its home islands like a descended aurora.” I hope Professor Nolan’s book passes through the hands of a competent editor who will tame his more over-the-top literary pretensions prior to publication.

Nominally, this essay is about the lessons the Pearl Harbor attack offers. Having read it, however, I’m not sure what Professor Nolan thinks they are. Warfare evolves? Obviously. “Big” wars could still happen? Yes, they could. Group-think among leaders, especially those with limited experience of war, is dangerous? Yep, we know that too: think of the George W. Bush Administration. What lesson(s) does Professor Nolan think we should ponder on this 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor? I really don’t know.

  3. We will have a war with China. It will be a naval and air war with few ground troops. We will have a war with Russia and it will be with ground troops and air forces. It is just a matter of time. Wonder which one first?
