Ferris Bueller Comes to Fenway Park Tonight
Screening of ’80s hit comedy on center field videoboard
America’s favorite ballpark isn’t just for baseball: tonight the annual Movie Night at Fenway returns with a screening of the hit John Hughes comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on the center field videoboard. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and attendees are invited to walk the warning track (weather permitting) before the movie begins at 8:15 p.m. It’s an affordable ($10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and free for Red Sox season ticket holders and children under 2) opportunity to enjoy a classic film in America’s oldest Major League Baseball ballpark.
The screening coincides with the 30th anniversary of the film’s release. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick as the crafty and mischievous teen who calls in sick and skips school for a day to gallivant around Chicago with his girlfriend and his best friend. The film was an immediate critical and commercial success, becoming the highest grossing film of 1986, and has remained a family favorite since.
Tonight’s screening marks Fenway Park’s fourth annual movie night, and organizers selected Ferris Bueller to commemorate its anniversary and to celebrate the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. The movie tradition started in 2013, when Red Sox players and fans watched the coming-of-age baseball comedy The Sandlot during a three-hour rain delay of a game with the Minnesota Twins. In October 2014, in honor of Halloween, the ballpark screened Ghostbusters. Last year it was Fever Pitch, a comedy about a Red Sox fanatic starring Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore.
Moviegoers will be seated in the lower seating bowl and down the first base line to ensure the best views of the 40-by-100-foot center field videoboard. Concession stands will be open during the movie and alcohol will be available to 21+.
Movie Night at Fenway screens Ferris Bueller’s Day Off tonight, Wednesday, June 29, on the center field videoboard at Fenway Park, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston. Gates open at 7 p.m. and the movie starts at 8:15, rain or shine. Purchase tickets, $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, and free for Red Sox season ticket holders and children under 2, online or at the Fenway box offices at gates A, B, and D. Note: the movie is rated PG-13 for some strong language and adult situations. Take any MBTA Green B, C, or D Line trolley to Kenmore Square and walk.
