As a student employee, you will be working with the IT Help Center (ITHC) during the back-to-school move-in period and Fall 2024 in one of our three groups: Client Technology Services, Learning and Event Technology Services, or the Service Desk.

This webpage contains crucial details about your role during the ITHC’s School Opening procedures. Please read through this information carefully to secure a smooth transition into the fall semester.

What is School Opening?

School Opening marks the end of summer break as both new and returning students flock back to campus! Welcoming back the student body is no small task, but with dedicated student employees like you, the IT Help Center is up for the challenge! Our job during School Opening is to ensure students and parents experience a smooth, enjoyable transition through the move-in process and into the fall semester!

During School Opening, the ITHC provides in-depth training for our current and new student employees so we can offer our clients the best service possible as they arrive back to BU’s campus. This training will also teach our student employees how to properly deal with a wide variety of client situations that may arise throughout the academic year!

What does School Opening mean for the IT Help Center?

Regular move-in days are exciting times for the IT Help Center! We will be very busy with phone calls and walk-ins from clients experiencing technical issues on campus! Some of our student employees will also be stationed throughout campus, ready to help and engage with new students, returning students, and their parents. School Opening is IS&T’s prime opportunity to connect with the BU community and communicate who we are, where we are located, and how we can assist our clients with their technical needs. Student employees play a crucial role in establishing this positive connection with our client base!

As a member of our student staff, please plan to be back on campus by August 26th.

Please plan to arrive on campus no later than Monday, August 26th! Training will start by 9:00am the following day. Please read on to learn about the move-in requirements for student employees, whether living on or off-campus.

If you are living on campus (residence/dorm/apartment through BU Housing), follow the directions below to confirm your early move-in date.

Monday, August 26th is the only move-in day allowed for on-campus student employees.

When selecting your move-in date on StudentLink, choose the earliest slot available — Monday, August 26th may not be listed. If this is the case, we will provide BU Housing with the required information so your room will be ready for when you arrive for early move-in! Plan to visit your Residence Life office after 12 pm to pick up your room key.

Note: Housing only guarantees rooms after 4 pm on August 26th. If your room has been occupied over the summer, it may not be ready for you if you arrive on campus before this time. On the off chance your room is not ready for you upon arrival, the ORL offices will be staffed until midnight to issue room keys as rooms become available!

If you are living off-campus, please be prepared to attend training as scheduled.

Please make the appropriate commuting arrangements to ensure you will arrive on campus for all training sessions on Tuesday, August 27th, and Wednesday, August 28th. Our student employees are a valuable part of making sure move-in runs smoothly, so please be punctual (and present) for all student training sessions!
