smtp.bu.edu should now be the recommended SMTP setting

July 28th, 2011 in General News

Beginning with a change that went through on Tuesday, our TechWeb instructions provide people using BU Google Apps (or Exchange with IMAP) with smtp.bu.edu as BU’s SMTP setting, instead of acs-smtp.bu.edu. The acs-smtp.bu.edu setting still works – people do not need to change their existing settings. However, for those setting up new accounts or new mail clients, smtp.bu.edu should be the recommended setting. As was the case for acs-smtp.bu.edu, smtp.bu.edu should be used with SSL (port 465) which requires use of the BU login name and Kerberos password.

It has been brought to our attention that Lion cannot connect to MyPrint printers. IS&T is looking into this issue and trying to figure out how we can work around this, but we don't have an estimate on when it will be fixed.

Undergraduate Early Access Beginning

April 28th, 2011 in General News

Starting April 28, Enrollment Services will begin sending out Early Access emails to admitted freshman. This will probably mean an increase in calls regarding setting up Early Access Accounts. Please remember, beginning with this class, students will be setting up BU Google Apps accounts, so direct them to BU Google Mail and not horde. If you have any other questions, please let a CSS know.

Tickets relating to Training or services being offered by the Training Group should be assigned to "IS&T: Training," instead of "cgould." If you ever have any questions about to whom a ticket should be assigned, please ask a Staff Client Support Specialist.

Alumni Access to FitRec

December 8th, 2010 in General News

If Alumni have any trouble logging into FitRec, please have them try using their alumni username@alum.bu.edu for the login name and their alumni link password as the password.

If they do not have an alumni username and password, they can obtain one as outlined on TechWeb at www.bu.edu/tech/accounts/special/alumni/.

Please recommend this solution before forwarding calls to the AOC Help Desk (3-4000). (That's true at at any time, but especially after 5pm when the Alumni Help Desk is closed.)

Using the KB to view a list of supported departments

October 27th, 2010 in General News

The list of departments that we support, including both Tier 1 (primary support) and Tier 2 (second to the local support) is provided in the Knowledge Base. To access it, go to http://www.bu.edu/tech/fm/kb. Click on Run Reports and you'll see three different versions of the supported departments report (with varying levels of detail) that you can get by clicking a button.

You can also search by key word, just as you can for any other knowledge base topic. So, for example, if a call comes in requiring information about SSW support, you do not need to view the full list; simply search on "SSW" and you'll find the information you need.

Any information, including these lists, can be exported from the KB into Excel format. This is best done by me through the FileMaker client. Note that you would only want to do that for short-term use since the KB data, including the supported departments data, is continually changing.

Also note that I can make new reports, or modify existing reports, based on any field in the KB. Reports are usually very quick and easy to generate, so just let me know!
