Beyond that, <strong>the following guidelines will help ensure that you are computing safely at BU and beyond.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/desktop\/device-security\/endpoint-protection\/\">endpoint protection<\/a>\u00a0software installed.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that you should\u00a0<strong>never leave your laptop or device unattended<\/strong> in a public area or unlocked office.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember to back up your important files <\/strong>using whatever is the recommended data back-up method for your department.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remeber that no one at BU will ever ask you for your password. <\/strong>Beware of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/email\/unwanted-email\/help\/\">phishing<\/a> scams that ask you to click on a link and provide personal or account-related information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t open unexpected email attachments <\/strong>since they can infect your computer with a virus or spyware.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/policies\/1-2-b-data-access-management-policy\/\">Data Management Guide<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/infosec\/policies\/data-protection-standards\/\">Data Protection Standards<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/policies\/minimum-security-standards\/\">Minimum Security Standards<\/a> to ensure an understanding of how to handle <em>Confidential<\/em> or <em>Restricted Use<\/em> information properly<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/email\/datamotion\/\">SecureMail<\/a> when you need to ensure that specific messages go out with the highest level of encryption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New employees are generally provisioned with a secured computer or device, either by IS&amp;T&#8217;s Desktop Services team or your local computing support organization.
