It is important to know that each change that you make does not take effect immediately. No change will be committed until you click the blue <strong>Add Group<\/strong> or <strong>Edit Group<\/strong> button that appears in the <strong>Modify Group<\/strong> panel on the right-hand side of the group editor. The plugin will warn you if you attempt to leave the \u00c2\u00a0page without saving changes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Properties<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Give your group a unique name and description on the properties tab. These values are only viewable by <strong>Site Administrators<\/strong>, and can be used to help identify each group by function.<\/p>\n<p>The name should be unique and easily identifiable. You can use the description field to provide additional insight in to the purpose of this group.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/group-properties-undergrad-program-636x333.jpg\" alt=\"The Group Properties tab, filled out for the Training Site\" title=\"group-properties-undergrad-program\" width=\"636\" height=\"333\" class=\" \" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Group Properties tab, filled out for the Training Site<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Members<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The members tab allows you to assign and remove members for this group. The members tab has two panels:\u00a0<strong>Add User to this Group<\/strong> and <strong>Group Member List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use <strong>Add User to this Group <\/strong>to\u00c2 find the Section Editors that you would like to add. The text input inside the <strong>Add User to this Group<\/strong> panel features an autocomplete behavior to help you find users that belong to your site. The autocomplete tool tracks your keystrokes as you type, using your in-progress text value to query the site users and render a list of Section Editors that you may be looking for. The tool checks your input against usernames, display names, and email addresses in your site&#8217;s user pool. You can only add users that have the Section Editor role.<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/members-find-users-tool-636x277.jpg\" alt=\"Autocomplete helps us find our section editor (wpcms02) by login or email\" title=\"members-find-users-tool\" width=\"509\" height=\"222\" class=\" alignnone\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Once you have found the users you want to grant group membership for, click on the <strong>Add <\/strong>button and watch them appear in the\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Group Member List<\/strong> below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can repeat this process to add as many members as necessary. If you accidentally add a member that you did not intend to, or a member is no longer needed for the group, you can click the <strong>Remove<\/strong> link next to their name to remove them from the group. Note that switching a users role to something other than Section Editor\u00c2\u00a0will also remove them from any section editing groups they belonged to.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/group-member-added-636x211.jpg\" alt=\"wpcms02 has been added to this section group\" title=\"group-member-added\" width=\"636\" height=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our group now has one member \u00e2\u20ac\u201d wpcms02 (Beta WordPress).<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Permissions<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The permissions tab allows you to grant permissions for this group to specific content.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/group-permissions-panel-636x371.jpg\" alt=\"The group permissions tab\" title=\"group-permissions-panel\" width=\"572\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The permissions tab is broken in to separate sections for each post type available for your site. You can switch between permissions editors by clicking on the tab for the post type you want to set permissions for. The default tab is <strong>Pages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/group-permissions-post-type-tabs.jpeg\" alt=\"Group permissions panels has a tab for each post type\" title=\"group-permissions-post-type-tabs\" width=\"483\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All post type editors will show each post in one of two states \u00e2\u20ac\u201d allowed or denied. The default state for all content is denied. This means that a Section Editor will not be allowed to edit any content until you explicitly permit it through a section group.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"37\" width=\"475\" title=\"post-allowed\" alt=\"An allowed post\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/post-allowed.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"36\" width=\"474\" title=\"post-denied\" alt=\"A denied post\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/post-denied.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For hierarchical post types, it is possible to have a parent that is editable, but children that are not, and vice versa. These contradictory states are represented as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"30\" width=\"448\" title=\"post-allowed-with-denied-children\" alt=\"Parent post allowed with children that are denied\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/post-allowed-with-denied-children.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"30\" width=\"447\" title=\"post-denied-with-allowed-children\" alt=\"Parent post denied, with children that are allowed\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/post-denied-with-allowed-children.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clicking on a post will reveal a button that allows you to toggle permissions. If a post is denied, a green button will appear labeled <strong>Allow<\/strong>. If a post is already allowed, a red <strong>Deny<\/strong> button will appear. Clicking on these buttons will toggle permissions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"63\" width=\"434\" title=\"toggle-post-allow\" alt=\"Allow post toggle\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/toggle-post-allow.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"60\" width=\"432\" title=\"toggle-post-deny\" alt=\"Deny post toggle\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/toggle-post-deny.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Set Page Permissions<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment60578\" style=\"width: 492px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment60578\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/hierarchical-permissions-editor.jpeg\" alt=\"Hierarchical Permissions Editor\" title=\"hierarchical-permissions-editor\" width=\"482\" height=\"407\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60578 \" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment60578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hierarchical Permissions Editor<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>The permissions editor for hierarchical post types, such as Pages, presents you with a tree-like view of your content. Any page that has a right facing arrow next to it is a section \u00e2\u20ac\u201d meaning it has at least one child page beneath it. Clicking on this arrow will expand the section to reveal its children. You can click on the <strong>Expand All<\/strong> link to reveal all child pages, and the <strong>Collapse All<\/strong> link to return to the default collapsed state for all pages.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that all content is denied by default. In order to allow a page for editing, you click on it once to reveal the <strong>Allow<\/strong> permissions toggle. Child pages don&#8217;t have to share the same permissions as their parents. For instance, if this group should be able to edit everything in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Undergraduate Programs except for Special Programs and Courses , that is supported by the plugin:<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment60597\" style=\"width: 457px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment60597\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/undergrad-permissions-deny-child.jpeg\" alt=\"Step 1 - Denying a child page\" title=\"undergrad-permissions-deny-child\" width=\"447\" height=\"222\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60597 \" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment60597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step 1 &#8211; Denying a child page<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment60596\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment60596\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/undergrad-permissions-child-denied.jpeg\" alt=\"Step 2 - Child page is now denied\" title=\"undergrad-permissions-child-denied\" width=\"446\" height=\"222\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60596 \" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment60596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step 2 &#8211; Child page is now denied<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Let\u00e2\u20ac&#x2122;s continue in the next section by setting <strong>Post<\/strong> permissions for this group.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Set Post Permissions<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The permissions editor for flat post types (like <strong>Posts<\/strong>) differs in a few ways from those for hierarchical post types.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment60572\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment60572\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2012\/11\/flat-perm-editor.jpeg\" alt=\"Flat permissions editor\" title=\"flat-perm-editor\" width=\"481\" height=\"320\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60572 \" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment60572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flat permissions editor<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>For one, flat post types do not allow children, so the collapsible tree view is replaced with a simple list. The tree view used by the hierarchical permissions editor makes it relatively straightforward to find content and set permissions for multiple posts. Since flat post types can not be organized in sections, the toolbar areas above and below the post list have some extra features to help you find content you seek to edit permissions for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Search<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Filter the post list by a search term to find the specific post you are looking for.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pagination<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d While the tree view used for hierarchical post types can hide hundreds of pages in collapsed sections, that is not the case with flat post types. Pagination is provided to keep the list size manageable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bulk Edit<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d While the hierarchical permission editor can grant permissions to entire sections with two clicks, the flat permission editor requires a different approach to bulk editing. The pagination toolbar will not appear if you do not have more posts than this setting is looking for.<\/p>\n<h4>Bulk Edit Mode<\/h4>\n<p>Clicking on the <strong>Bulk Edit<\/strong> link change the permissions editor to bulk edit mode. As soon as you click the button, the post list changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An extra toolbar pops up at the top with a checkbox, a\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Bulk Actions<\/strong> drop-down menu, and an <strong>Apply<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>A checkbox appears to the left of each post.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The function is similar to how you bulk edit your Posts or Pages. This button is located at the bottom, right-hand side of the <strong>Modify Group<\/strong> panel.
