{"id":18550,"date":"2009-12-10T11:51:26","date_gmt":"2009-12-10T15:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/?page_id=18550"},"modified":"2023-04-04T10:38:43","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T14:38:43","slug":"dns-servers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/networks\/dns\/dns-servers\/","title":{"rendered":"DNS Servers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 aria-hidden=\"true\">Boston University DNS Servers<\/h1>\n<p><!-- This h1 is not included in the accessibility tree and therefore ignored by the rule --><br \/>\nBoston University maintains several sets of DNS servers for varying purposes.\u00a0\u00a0 There are four main sets that clients may need to reference.<\/p>\n<h2>Charles River Campus<\/h2>\n<p>On the Charles River, computers running DHCP are automatically configured to use the correct set of DNS servers.\u00a0 For manually configured systems, the primary DNS servers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DNS01.bu.edu (128.197.253.183)<\/li>\n<li>DNS02.bu.edu (128.197.253.120)<\/li>\n<li>DNS03.bu.edu (128.197.253.254)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These servers are only accessible from systems connected to the University\u2019s network or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/\">VPN service<\/a>.\u00a0 All other Computers operating off campus should be configured to use the DNS servers provided by their local networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Medical Campus<\/h2>\n<p>On the Medical Campus, computers running DHCP are automatically configured to use the correct set of DNS servers.\u00a0 For manually configured systems, the primary DNS servers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DNS01.bumc.bu.edu (155.41.254.250)<\/li>\n<li>DNS02.bumc.bu.edu (155.41.254.251)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These servers are only accessible from systems connected to the University\u2019s network or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/\">VPN service<\/a>.\u00a0 All other Computers operating off campus should be configured to use the DNS servers provided by their local networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Domain Registration<\/h2>\n<p>Boston University maintains three servers which provide primary name resolution to systems throughout the Internet for various domain names, such as <em>bu.edu. <\/em>If you are registering a new domain, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\" class=\"myhelp_activate\">contact us<\/a> <em>before registering and listing these servers.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>eDNS01.bu.edu (128.197.253.182)<\/li>\n<li>eDNS02.bu.edu (168.122.254.62)<\/li>\n<li>eDNS03.bu.edu (192.12.188.130)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These servers are <em>non-recursive<\/em>, which means that they will only respond to queries for domains officially registered to the University.\u00a0 Computers should not be configured to use these servers for DNS services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boston University DNS Servers Boston University maintains several sets of DNS servers for varying purposes.\u00a0\u00a0 There are four main sets that clients may need to reference.
