Please follow the applicable instructions below to&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"bodytypeTimes\">Discontinue POP use in web-based mail services such as Gmail<\/h3>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">If you have configured a non-BU web-based mail service <strong>(e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail)<\/strong> to use POP in order to download mail from BU, you should <strong>remove the acs-pop setting<\/strong> using the interface provided by the service.<\/p>\n<h3>Switch from POP to IMAP in your mobile device settings<\/h3>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">If you have configured a mobile device to read email via the POP mail protocol, you should disable that account in the device and set it up again, using the instructions for the device and the settings outlined at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/email\/acs-retired-2015-10-09\/mobile-devices\/\">www-staging.bu.edu\/tech\/comm\/email\/acs\/mobile-devices\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"bodytypeTimes\">Switch from POP to IMAP in your desktop mail clients<\/h3>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">If you have configured any desktop mail clients to use POP, you will need to change that setting, as described below. Note, however, that <strong>you should not delete the current\/POP Account in your mail program!<\/strong> If you do, it could make things more complicated by removing access to your existing local messages.<a href=\"#lost\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><strong>Instead, carefully follow these instructions to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong class=\"bodytypeTimes\">deactivate the POP account<\/strong> (while still keeping it as an archive of previous messages) and<\/li>\n<li><strong>configure your mail client to read via IMAP<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><a href=\"#tbird\">Mozilla Thunderbird<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#oewindows\">Windows Mail\/Outlook Express<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#entourage\">Entourage<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#2010\">Outlook 2010<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#outlook2007\">Outlook 2007<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#outlookxp\">Outlook XP or 2003<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#Mail\">Mac Mail<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"#general\">General instructions for use with any mail program<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a id=\"tbird\" name=\"tbird\"><\/a>Mozilla Thunderbird<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">1. Launch Thunderbird<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">2. Choose from the menu <strong>Tools-&gt;Account Settings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">3. Make sure the POP account is the one you have selected to work on and click on <strong>Server Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you find only an IMAP account (acs-imap.bu.edu) and not one using POP (acs-pop.bu.edu) then you might be all set and should not make any changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">4. <strong>Deselect<\/strong> the options to <strong>Check for new messages at startup<\/strong> and <strong>Check for new messages every X minutes<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">6. Click on <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">7. Next, go to <strong>Tools-Options<\/strong> and click on the Security tab (called Privacy in previous versions). Click on <strong>View Saved Passwords<\/strong> and remove the password associated with the POP Account. Then click on <strong>Close<\/strong> and <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">8. Next, choose <strong>File-Exit<\/strong> to quit out of Thunderbird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">9. <strong>Launch Thunderbird again.<\/strong> If you are prompted for a password (you shouldn&#8217;t be) don&#8217;t give it &#8212; instead click on Cancel. (If you <em>were<\/em> prompted for a password, please repeat the steps above to make sure you did them correctly.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">10. Now that your POP account has been disabled, you can <strong>go ahead and set up your new IMAP account<\/strong>. BU&#8217;s <strong>IMAP<\/strong> server is <strong>acs-imap.bu.edu and you should use that with SSL (port 993)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">11. <strong>You should be all set once you have set that up.<\/strong> If you wish to upload specific messages from your old\/local Inbox into your new ACS Inbox (so they will be available from elsewhere) you can do that simply by dragging them. Please be selective in doing that, however, as your Inbox is now subject to quota restrictions so you don&#8217;t want to overload it. It&#8217;s probably best to move messages a few at a time and to take only still-useful messages that you really need to access centrally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">12. If you have ever created any folders on the server (for example, with Horde) you should now see those folders listed. If you don&#8217;t see them, it should help to go to <strong>File-Subscribe<\/strong> and make sure they are listed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a id=\"oewindows\" name=\"oewindows\"><\/a>Windows Mail\/Outlook Express<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">1. Launch the mail client<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">2. Choose from the menu <strong>Tools-Accounts, select the POP account<\/strong> <strong>(which is probably named acs-pop.bu.edu)<\/strong> and click on <strong>Properties<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nNOTE: If you find only an IMAP account (acs-imap.bu.edu) and not one using POP (acs-pop.bu.edu) then you might be all set and should not make any changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">3. On the <strong>General<\/strong> tab <strong>deselect<\/strong> the option for <strong>Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing<\/strong> AND THEN on the <strong>Servers<\/strong> tab, <strong>deselect<\/strong> the option for <strong>Remember password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">4. Click on <strong>OK<\/strong> and <strong>Close.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">5. Choose <strong>File-Exit<\/strong> to quit out of OE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">6. Launch OE again and, if you are prompted for a password (you shouldn&#8217;t be) don&#8217;t give it &#8212; instead click on Cancel. (If you <em>were<\/em> prompted for a password, please repeat the steps above to make sure you did them correctly.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">7. Click on <strong>OK<\/strong> and <strong>Close the Accounts window.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">6. Choose <strong>Entourage-Quit Entourage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">7. Launch Entourage again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">8. Now that your old\/POP account has been disabled, you can <strong>go ahead and set up your new IMAP account<\/strong>. Make sure the name of your POP server is selected (most likely this will be acs-pop.bu.edu) and then click on the <strong>Change<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you find only an IMAP account (acs-imap.bu.edu) and not one using POP (acs-pop.bu.edu) then you might be all set and should not make any changes.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Remove the check mark next to &#8220;Remember password.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Click on <strong>Send\/Receive Groups<\/strong> and select the option to <strong>Define Send\/Receive Groups&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>8. Then click on <strong>Edit<\/strong>, click on the POP account (probably named <strong>acs-pop.bu.edu<\/strong>) and <strong>deselect<\/strong> the option for <strong>Include the selected account in this group<\/strong>. Then click on <strong>OK<\/strong> and <strong>Close<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>9. Choose <strong>File-Exit<\/strong> to quit out of Outlook.<\/p>\n<p>10. Launch Outlook again and, if you are prompted for a password for that account (you shouldn&#8217;t be) don&#8217;t give it &#8212; instead click on Cancel. Click on &#8220;Subscribe&#8221; to make sure they are listed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><strong><a id=\"outlook2007\" name=\"outlook2007\"><\/a><a name=\"outlook2007\"><\/a>Outlook 2007<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">1. Launch Mail<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">2. Go to <strong>Mail-Preferences<\/strong> and <strong>select the POP Account that you need to disable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you find only an IMAP account (acs-imap.bu.edu) and not one using POP (acs-pop.bu.edu) then you might be all set and should not make any changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">3. Remove the password by deleting the dots that represent it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">4. Click on the Advanced tab and <strong>deselect<\/strong> the option for <strong>Enable this account<\/strong> and also <strong>deselect<\/strong> the option for <strong>Include when automatically checking for new mail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">4. <strong>Close<\/strong> the Accounts window and <strong>Save<\/strong> your changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">5. Choose <strong>Mail-Quit Mail<\/strong> to exit out of the application.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">6. Launch Mail again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">7. Now that your old\/POP account has been disabled, you can <strong>go ahead and set up your new IMAP account as an additional account. <\/strong>Follow the instructions outlined at<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/email\/acs-retired-2015-10-09\/desktop-clients\/osxmail\/\" target=\"_blank\">www-staging.bu.edu\/tech\/comm\/email\/acs\/desktop-clients\/osxmail\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">8. <strong>You should be all set once you have set up your new IMAP account.<\/strong> If you wish to upload specific messages from your old\/local Inbox into your new ACS Inbox (so they will be available from elsewhere) you can do that simply by dragging them. If you don&#8217;t see them, it should help to go to <strong>Mailbox-Synchronize<\/strong> and make sure they are listed.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><a id=\"general\" name=\"general\"><\/a>General instructions<\/h3>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\">The process of moving from POP to IMAP will be similar, <strong>regardless of which desktop mail program you are using<\/strong>. If the specific steps above do not include your mail program, please refer to this summary as a general guideline for what you will need to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><span class=\"pcscrednotlink\">NOTE:<\/span> Note that <strong>you do not need to delete the current\/POP Account in your mail program!<a href=\"#lost\">*<\/a><\/strong> In fact, if you do, it could make things more complicated by removing access to your existing local messages. If you have your password configured in the settings, you should <strong>remove your pre-set password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><span class=\"pcscrednotlink\">Step 2.<\/span> Close the mail program and launch it again. Do not give a password if prompted (which you shouldn&#8217;t be) &#8211; just click on Cancel. If you were prompted, repeat Step 1 to make sure you didn&#8217;t miss anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><span class=\"pcscrednotlink\">Step 3.<\/span> <strong>Set up the new IMAP &#8220;Account&#8221;<\/strong> in your mail program. BU&#8217;s <strong>IMAP<\/strong> server is <strong>acs-imap.bu.edu and you should use that with SSL (port 993)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytypeTimes\"><span class=\"pcscrednotlink\">Step 4.<\/span> Once the configuration is complete, you should be all set to now <strong>begin using the IMAP version of your ACS account<\/strong>. If you wish to upload specific messages from your old\/local Inbox into your new ACS Inbox (so that they will be available from elsewhere) you can do that simply by dragging them. Please be selective in doing that, however, as your Inbox is now subject to quota restrictions and you don&#8217;t want to overload it.
