This transition will help us deploy devices directly to you, without requiring assistance from on-campus IT support teams, while keeping your software and OS secure and up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the transition, you&#8217;ll need to follow a few steps to move your device into the new management system. For assistance, please <a href=\"https:\/\/bu.edu\/tech\/contact\">contact us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mdm-mig-expectations\">What should I expect?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Transitioning your computer should take about 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll need to know and enter your current Mac password. In many cases, this is your BU password.<\/li>\n<li>While you should not need to restart your computer, we recommend taking a moment to do the following before migrating:\n<ul>\n<li>Save anything you might be working on<\/li>\n<li>Exit open applications, as you are able<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect from the BU VPN, if you are currently connected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You do not need admin permissions to perform the migration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"mdm-mig-how-to\">How do I migrate?<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find the migration tool in Self Service, which is a red Rhett icon on your dock and in your Applications folder:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Self Service, then look for &#8220;Migrate to Kandji&#8221; option. You can also <a href=\"jamfselfservice:\/\/content?action=category&amp;id=58\">click here to open it directly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Migrate&#8221; button to start the process.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2025\/04\/mdm-migration-jamf_self_service.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Jamf Self Service. You may also see notifications about Cisco Secure Client&#8217;s network filter and extensions from Cisco or Crowdstrike. If these appear, you can select &#8220;OK&#8221; or &#8220;Allow&#8221; to dismiss them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A screen welcoming you to the Kandji Migration Agent will appear. Click &#8220;Enroll,&#8221; then enter your Mac password.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Note: <\/strong>On some older versions of macOS, you may need to click on a notification and follow additional prompts instead. If any outdated apps are currently open, Kandji will present you with an update deadline and the option to close and update the apps immediately.<\/p>\n<h3>Managed App Store Apps<\/h3>\n<p>If you previously downloaded App Store apps via Self Service, you may need to manually update or reinstall them using the new Self Service app. This includes: iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Microsoft To Do, and Slack.<\/p>\n<p>To do so:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Iru Self Service from your Dock or Applications folder, then locate the Updates section. What does this mean?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Focus Modes, introduced in macOS 13, include Do Not Disturb and other custom options that will determine whether or not you receive notifications. Prior to macOS 14, device enrollment invitations appeared as a system notification, which could be missed when using Do Not Disturb or a custom Focus.<\/p>\n<p>To turn off Focus, look for a moon icon in your menu bar or open Control Center. For more information, please see <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/mac-help\/turn-a-focus-on-or-off-mchl999b7c1a\/13.0\/mac\/13.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple&#8217;s documentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">After migrating, Microsoft Remote Desktop disappeared. Where did it go?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>In September 2024, Microsoft replaced the Remote Desktop app with the Windows App. We have observed several cases where Microsoft&#8217;s auto-update mechanism failed to transition clients to the Windows App in the time since its release. After migrating, Kandji may detect this and force the transition to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Because Microsoft&#8217;s Windows App installer did not include a step to replace shortcuts, you may notice Remote Desktop disappear from your Dock or other places. Please look for &#8220;Windows App&#8221; in your Applications folder, Launchpad, or via Spotlight. You can then pin it to your Dock again or make new shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p>Note that, while the app name, icon, and shortcuts will change, your saved connections will be retained.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">After migrating, I was asked to sync my Mac and Active Directory password. Didn't I do this already?<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>If your computer previously had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/desktop\/macos-kerberos-single-sign-on-extension\/\">Kerberos SSO Extension<\/a>, a tool for keeping your local password in sync with your BU password, it will be reapplied after migrating to Kandji. Because the extension configuration was removed and reapplied during the transition, the extension is reset, requiring you to sync your password again when you are next on the BU network.<\/p>\n<p>If your password was already in sync, you should enter the same password in both the Active Directory and Mac password boxes.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IS&amp;T and BUMC IT are transitioning to a new macOS device management system.
