Disabling Peer-to-Peer File Sharing<\/h3>\n

Any sharing of copyrighted materials on the University network is a violation of the Computing Ethics Policy<\/a>, and may lead to disciplinary action and, in some cases, legal action. Inform yourself of the Recording Industry of America’s (RIAA) guidelines regarding piracy<\/a><\/a>. Find out more about copyright issues by visiting the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) copyright information page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The links below list some of the most common peer-to-peer clients and link to instructions on how to disable file sharing on each one. If your particular client is not listed here you are not exempted from the restrictions against distributing copyrighted material.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please note, if you are distributing copyrighted materials via another method (i.e. ftp, Hotline, IRC, etc.) this is also considered a violation of the Computing Ethics Policy<\/a> and as such disciplinary action will be initiated against individuals who engage in such activity.<\/p>\n

The instructions on these pages are a guide for what we currently think are feasible workarounds, but ultimate responsibility for your network usage falls to you.<\/p>\n

Acquisition<\/h3>
<\/strong><\/p>\n
    \n
  1. Select Preferences<\/strong> from the Acquisition<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n
  2. In the window that opens, click the Sharing<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n
  3. Make sure there are no files and\/or folders listed. If files\/folders are listed you may have to select each one and click on the Remove<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

    Amister<\/h3>
    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    Note: Aimster is now called Madster and is now a subscription service. The current version of the software may differ from what is shown here.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Select the Settings<\/strong> item from the Aimster control panel.<\/li>\n
    2. Select the Transfers<\/strong> tab and change the Max Aimster Uploads<\/strong> field to 0.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Ares and Ares Lite<\/h3>

      1. In the main window, click Library<\/strong> at the top.<\/li>\n
      2. Click the Preferences<\/strong> button and select the Manual configure<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n
      3. Look for drives or folders with a red box next to their name. These drives have shared sub-folders. Expand the drive tree by clicking the + button next to their names until you find all of the folders with a selected check box next to them. Uncheck<\/strong> all of the boxes.<\/li>\n
      4. When there are no shared folders remaining, all of the drives should have empty gray check boxes next to them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        BearShare<\/h3>
        <\/strong><\/p>\n

        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

        BitTorrent (and other BitTorrent clients)<\/h3>
        <\/strong><\/p>\n

        It is not possible to disable filesharing in BitTorrent (or other torrent clients) or to disable sharing of .torrent files while downloading from another client.<\/p>\n

        As long as you are downloading a .torrent file or leave the window open, you are sharing that file. Because of this, it is strongly recommended that you not use BitTorrent (or other clients) to download copyrighted files.<\/p>\n

        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

        Blubster<\/h3>
        <\/strong><\/p>\n

        You can turn off sharing during Blubster installation.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. In the Blubster Configuration Assistant<\/strong> window click the Remove…<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n
        2. Select all the shared folders and click Remove<\/strong>. Click Close<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          If Blubster is already installed:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Click the My Music<\/strong> button in the main window.<\/li>\n
          2. Click the UnShare<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n
          3. In the window that opens, select all the shared folders and click Remove<\/strong>. Click Close<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

            Direct Connect<\/h3>
            <\/strong><\/p>\n

            1. Select the\u00a0Settings<\/strong> item from the menu bar.<\/li>\n
            2. Click the\u00a0Add<\/strong> button under the\u00a0Shared Folders<\/strong>: box.<\/li>\n
            3. Select the folder where you want to create a new empty folder.<\/li>\n
            4. Click the\u00a0New Folder<\/strong> button, and type in a name such as “Empty<\/strong>“, then click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            5. The folder you created should now appear in the\u00a0Shared Folders<\/strong> window. Leave this folder empty to prevent the sharing of files.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

              eDonkey2000 and Overnet<\/h3>
              <\/strong><\/p>\n

              It is not possible to completely disable filesharing in eDonkey 2000 or Overnet.<\/em><\/p>\n

              The downloads directory,\u00a0incoming<\/strong>, must be shared. To remain in compliance with applicable policies and federal law, you must not store or keep copyrighted content which you don’t have permission to share in this folder.<\/p>\n

              To remove other shared folders follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Click the Shared<\/strong> button in the main window and select the My Computer<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n
              2. Look for drives and folders with icons of a small green dot next to a larger gray dot. These drives and folders have shared sub-folders. Expand the directory tree of these folders by clicking the + button, and unselect all of the shared folders by clicking the green dots.<\/li>\n
              3. The incoming folder in the eDonkey2000 or Overnet directory cannot be unshared. Remove all files from this folder and continue to remove new ones as they are downloaded.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      You cannot unshare ‘My Shared Folder’<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                      1. Select the\u00a0Uploads<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>section from the left side of the main GTK-Gnutella window.<\/li>\n
                      2. Change the\u00a0Maximum simultaneous uploads<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>field to\u00a00<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        iMesh<\/h3>

                        The easiest time to disable file sharing in iMesh is during installation. In the\u00a0Installation Complete<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>window, check the box labeled\u00a0Disable Sharing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        If iMesh is already installed:<\/p>\n

                        1. Click the\u00a0Options<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>button at the top of the\u00a0Search<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>window.<\/li>\n
                        2. Select the\u00a0Security<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>category from the list and check the box labeled\u00a0Don’t share files on this computer<\/strong>. Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                        3. To make sure you are not sharing any folders, select the\u00a0My Library<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>window and click the\u00a0Share Manager<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>button.<\/li>\n
                        4. Look for drives and folders with a grayed-out box next to them. These drives or folders have sub-folders that are being shared. Expand the directory tree and uncheck all selected check boxes.<\/li>\n
                        5. When you have unselected all check boxes, there should be no more grayed-out boxes left. Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                          Kazaa Lite and Kazaa Lite K++<\/h3>

                              Kazaa also installs the Peer Points Manager program. To disable filesharing in this, select the <\/span>Settings<\/strong>\u00a0tab in the main window and uncheck the box labeled <\/span>Enabled File Sharing<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                      3. Folders whose icons contain an arrow pointing to a triangle contain shared sub-folders. Expand the directory tree by clicking the\u00a0+<\/strong>\u00a0boxes and uncheck all of the selected boxes.<\/li>\n
                                                      4. When a folder contains no shared sub-folders, its icon will be plain but the icons are not updated until the window is closed and reopened. Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>, and then reopen the window to make sure there are no more shared folders.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                                        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                        TrustyFiles<\/h3>
                                                        <\/strong><\/p>\n

                                                        It is not possible to completely disable filesharing in TrustyFiles.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

                                                        The downloads directory, ‘C:\\Program Files\\TrustyFiles\\Downloads’ by default must be shared. To remain in compliance with applicable policies and federal law, you must not store or keep copyrighted content which you don’t have permission to share in this folder.<\/p>\n

                                                        To remove other shared folders follow the instructions below:<\/p>\n
