Once you are connected to the VPN, you should follow the instructions below to begin printing. If you are asked to authenticate when you print, please enter your BU login name and password.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Manually Installing Printers<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Installing the printers manually will not allow you to use finishing features, such as stapling and hole punching. We recommend using the package method above wherever possible.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Apple<\/strong> menu and open <strong>System Preferences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click on <strong>Printers &amp; Scanners<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;<strong>+<\/strong>&#8221; button at the bottom of the Printers List.<\/li>\n<li>On the toolbar at the top of the window, look for an <strong>Advanced<\/strong> (gear) icon. If you see it, click it. If not, follow the below steps to make it visible first.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/tech\/files\/2018\/07\/macos-print-advanced.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2018\/07\/macos-print-advanced.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-115601\" width=\"64\" height=\"55\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Hold down the <strong>Control<\/strong> key while clicking (right click) anywhere on the toolbar, then choose <strong>Customize Toolbar<\/strong> from the menu that appears.<\/li>\n<li>Drag the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> (gear) icon to the toolbar and click <strong>Done<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From the <strong>Type<\/strong> menu, choose <strong>Windows printer via spoolss<\/strong>. It may take a minute before the <strong>Type<\/strong> menu is visible.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>URL<\/strong> field, enter the address of the print queue: <strong>smb:\/\/ist-print.bu.edu\/queue<\/strong> &#8211; substituting the name of the queue (BU-bw or BU-color). For example, <em>smb:\/\/ist-print.bu.edu\/BU-bw<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Name<\/strong> field, type a nickname that you would like to use for this printer (e.g. <em>BU BW<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Generic PostScript Printer<\/strong> in the <strong>Use<\/strong> dropdown. If you do not see the Run Program (e.g. Windows 7 users) go to <strong>Search Programs and Files<\/strong> and type <strong>Run<\/strong>. You will then be able to see it and press <strong>Enter<\/strong> to launch it.<\/li>\n<li>In the search bar, type <strong>&#8220;\\\\ist-print.bu.edu\\BU-BW&#8221;<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/hold-release-printers-configure-on-device\/ist-print-bu-bw\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-143473\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2023\/01\/IST-PRINT-BU-BW.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-143473\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you are asked to authenticate, enter the following information:\n<ul>\n<li>Type your <strong>BU login name<\/strong> in <strong>AD\\login<\/strong> format. For example, if your BU email is <em>rhett@bu.edu<\/em>, enter <strong>AD\\rhett<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Type your <strong>Kerberos password<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the <strong>Save Password<\/strong> box.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The driver will automatically download and install on your system. If prompted, indicate that you <strong>Trust the source<\/strong> and <strong>Install<\/strong> the printer.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat process for <strong>&#8220;\\\\ist-print.bu.edu\\BU-Color&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a name=\"linux\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Linux<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This should work for any Linux box with <em>CUPS<\/em> &#8211; the Common Unix Printing Service, but these instructions cater to the GNOME Desktop. If you are using <em>KDEPrint<\/em>, see below for a slight modification of these instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Requires the packages (samba smbclient cifs-utils ) be installed (sudo apt install samba smbclient cifs-utils)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To set up a printer, click <strong>System<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Administration<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Printing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>New<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Printer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Windows Printer via SAMBA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>At the <strong>smb:\/\/<\/strong> prompt enter <strong>ist-print.bu.edu\/bu-printingtype<\/strong> <span>substituting the type of printing (bu-bw or bu-color)<\/span><span> that you wish to use (for example <\/span><em>smb:\/\/ist-print.ad.bu.edu\/bu-bw<\/em><span>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Prompt User if Authentication is Required<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your <strong>BU login name<\/strong> and <strong>Kerberos password<\/strong>. Be sure to type your <strong>BU login name<\/strong> in <em>AD\\login<\/em> format. For example, if your BU email is <em>rhett@bu.edu<\/em>, enter <strong>AD\\rhett<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Forward<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Postscript Printer<\/strong> and <strong>Generic Postscript Printer [en]<\/strong> and click <strong>Forward<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the name of the printer and, optionally, your own name for the printer. Then click <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Printer now should be available in the printer list and ready for use.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"other\" id=\"other\"><\/a>NOTE:<\/strong> If you are using KDEPrint (as opposed to GNOME) the instructions are essentially the same except:<\/p>\n<p>server: &#8220;ist-print.bu.edu&#8221;<br \/>\nprinter: &#8220;<em>bu-BW<\/em>&#8221; (or applicable printing type)<br \/>\nNote that the protocol is not listed in the address<br \/>\nIf you have any trouble, try removing smb:\/\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are off campus, use the VPN If you are in an off-campus location, you will first need to connect to the VPN &#8211; login at http:\/\/vpn.bu.edu.
