On the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Course Content<\/span><\/strong><span> page, the title appears as the link students select to view the materials. <strong><em>Note: <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span>If you don&#8217;t add a title, &#8220;New Test&#8221; and the date appear in the content list. If you don&#8217;t add content, the test won&#8217;t appear on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Course Content<\/span><\/strong><span> page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Select the plus sign in the body of the test to open the content menu and make a selection. You can choose a question type, add a question pool, or reuse questions and content from existing assessments. You can also <\/span>add files and text<span>, such as instructions for the test. You can also\u00a0<\/span>add files from cloud storage<span>, such as OneDrive<\/span><span>\u00a0and Google Drive.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-09\/ultra_instructor_create_test.png\" width=\"583\" height=\"1062\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of Course Content\u00a0page\" \/><\/li>\n<li>From the <strong>Course Content\u00a0<\/strong>page, y<span>ou can make changes to existing tests and change where they appear on the <\/span><span>page. Be aware that if you change an existing test that students can access, some students may have started their submissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Also from the\u00a0<strong>Course Content\u00a0<\/strong>page, y<span>ou can change the test&#8217;s due date and grade unit at any time, even after students have made submissions (students&#8217; statuses, scores, and grade units will update also). Do this by hovering over the test and selecting the three dots on the right side, then clicking\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Edit&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>You can delete a test from your course and if no student submissions exist, the gradebook item is also deleted. For tests with submissions, you must confirm that you want to permanently remove the test, all submissions, and grades from your course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"Add-Reorder-Questions-Ultra\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Adding &amp; Reordering questions<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Adding Questions and Content<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span>When you create a new test, select the plus sign to open the menu and select a question type. You can also\u00a0<\/span>reuse questions and content<span><span> from existing assessments. If you add questions to a test, you can&#8217;t enable anonymous or parallel grading.<\/span><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-03\/ultra_create_test_question.png\" width=\"466\" height=\"465\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of Adding Questions and Content\" \/><\/li>\n<li>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Test Content<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>area opens where you type the question and answer choices if required, such as for <strong>Multiple Choice<\/strong> questions. Questions have a default value of 10 points. Select the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Points<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>box to type a new value.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-07\/ultra_instructor_add_question_text.png\" width=\"402\" height=\"427\" class=\"\" \/><\/li>\n<li><span>You can use the options in the editor to format the text.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>To help keep your test content organized, you can add files within individual questions. Make a selection from the editor&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Insert Content<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0menu, such as\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Insert from Cloud Storage<\/span><\/strong><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Select\u00a0<strong><span class=\"interface\">Add text<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to open the text block editor. You can include instructions for a section of the test or introductory text for an audio file or image. You can also\u00a0use the editor to embed images and attach files\u00a0along with your text.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-03\/ultra_add_question_text_file_0.png\" width=\"445\" height=\"408\" class=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>If you create a test that only includes text blocks, you can manually change the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Maximum score<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Test Settings<\/span><\/strong><span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>panel. For example, you may want students to upload submissions or use the freeform text fields.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>To add additional files, select\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Add local file<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0to browse for files on your computer. You can&#8217;t add a folder of files<\/span><\/li>\n<li>For more information about <strong>Question Types<\/strong> in tests, please <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Tests_Pools_Surveys\/Question_Types#ultra_types\">visit this page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><strong>Reordering Questions and Content<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span>Questions are numbered automatically in the order you add them. The question numbers update when you reorder.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"emphasize\">Before students open the test<\/span><span>, you can reorder the elements of your test.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Point to a test item to access the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Move<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0icon. Press and drag the question, text block, or file to a new location.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2019-12\/ultra_tests_reorder_questions.png\" width=\"383\" height=\"137\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of reordering questions and content\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 id=\"Test-Settings-Ultra\"><strong>Test Settings (Ultra)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"Test-Availability-Ultra\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Test Availability<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Test Availability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Students can&#8217;t see a test until you choose to show it. By using conditional availability, you can create all your content ahead of time and choose what you want students to see based on your schedule. You can also set\u00a0<\/span>availability conditions<span> based on date, time, and performance on other items in the course Gradebook. On the <strong>Course Content<\/strong>\u00a0page, students can see when you set the test to show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2018-03\/ultra_release_content_date.png\" width=\"531\" height=\"332\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of Test Availability\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>To do this, select the visibility option in the top right corner of the test, and click <strong>&#8220;Conditional availability&#8221; <\/strong>in the dropdown.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You can show, hide, or use rules to release content to students. You can release an item or folder on an exact date, until a certain date, or during a defined period of time.<\/li>\n<li>After you choose dates and times, you can also show or hide the content for students before they have access.\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"interface\">Visible to students.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>If you choose to show the content to students before they can access it, your date and time choices are shown with the item on the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Course Content<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>page. Students see the date and time the content will be released and when they can no longer access it. After students&#8217; access ends, the content is still visible but they can&#8217;t access it.\n<div data-embed-button=\"media_browser\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"96a3017f-3931-462a-9910-f427be34a040\" data-langcode=\"en\" class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-11\/studentdateandtime.png\" width=\"263\" height=\"142\" alt=\"\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"interface\">Hidden from students<\/span>. If you choose to hide the content from students before they can access it, the content is only visible to students when they&#8217;re able to access it. Students don&#8217;t see the dates and times when they can no longer access the content. After students&#8217; access ends, the content is hidden from their view.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"General-Settings-Ultra\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">General Settings<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>General Settings<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To change the test&#8217;s settings, s<span>elect the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Settings<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0icon to open the panel where you provide the test&#8217;s details and information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>You can set accommodations for students and make them exempt from certain course requirements, such as test due dates and time limits. To select accommodations, go to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Roster<\/span><\/strong><span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and access the student&#8217;s menu. The number of accommodations you&#8217;ve made appears on the test page in the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Test Settings<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0section.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>You can randomize questions and their answers to support practice\/drilling activities and help students avoid academic dishonesty. You can use one or both settings so tests appear differently for each student. Use the <strong>Randomize questions <\/strong>and <strong>Randomize answers <\/strong>check boxes accordingly.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-08\/ultra_instr_test_randomize_questions_answers.png\" width=\"528\" height=\"208\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of Test Setting panel\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>You can&#8217;t randomize questions in a test with text blocks or attachments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>You can only randomize answers for <strong>Matching<\/strong> and <strong>Multiple Choice<\/strong> questions. If you want to randomize answers for <strong>True\/False<\/strong> questions, use the <strong>Multiple Choice<\/strong> question type with True and False answer choices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Questions appear in order to you but are randomized for students. To prevent confusion, don&#8217;t add numbers to reference other questions within the test.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>You can change the test&#8217;s <strong>Grade Category<\/strong> to be part of one of the\u00a0<\/span>custom gradebook categories<span>\u00a0you set up in your course. You can create new categories to customize how coursework is grouped in your course. You can use the default and custom categories when you\u00a0<\/span>set up the overall grade<span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>By selecting the dropdown for <strong>Attempts Allowed<\/strong>, you can let your students submit more than one attempt at a test. When you\u00a0<\/span>allow multiple attempts<span>, you can also choose how the final grade is calculated.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose how you want to calculate the final grade:\n<ul>\n<li>Average of all attempts<\/li>\n<li>First attempt with a grade<\/li>\n<li>Attempt with highest grade<\/li>\n<li>Last attempt with a grade<\/li>\n<li>Attempt with lowest grade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>From the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Grade using<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0menu, select an existing grading schema such as\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Points<\/span><\/strong><span>. A test&#8217;s score consists of the sum total of all the questions&#8217; points. You can change the grading schema at any time and the change will show to students and in your <strong>Gradebook<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>When you create a test without questions, you can enable anonymous grading by checking\u00a0<strong>Hide student names<\/strong>, so student names are hidden while you grade. You may only add text and files to anonymously graded tests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Select the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Show correct answers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0check box to allow students to see the correct answers to automatically scored questions after they submit.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>In the assessment settings panel, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show correct answers<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show question scores<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"emphasize\">aren&#8217;t selected by default<\/span>, so correct answers and scores per question are hidden from students. When you want students to review the answers with the assessment content, return to the settings panel and select<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show correct answers<\/span>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show question scores<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>will be selected automatically. When you show correct answers, you need to also show the question scores. To show only the score per question but not the correct score, clear the check box for<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show correct answers<\/span>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-06\/ultra_scoreperquestion.png\" width=\"271\" height=\"432\" alt=\"image of grading and submission control panel\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/li>\n<li>The due date you set doesn&#8217;t affect this setting. Select the check box when you&#8217;re ready to reveal the answers to all students.<\/li>\n<li>After students complete an assessment and return to review it, a banner appears at the top of the assessment. They&#8217;re informed that their instructor will reveal the correct answers after all students have submitted. Any feedback you&#8217;ve provided won&#8217;t appear until grades are posted.<\/li>\n<li>If you don&#8217;t want students to see the banner for assessments without questions, select the check box for<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Show correct answers<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>during creation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span><span>You can issue an <strong>Access Code<\/strong> to control when students and groups take an assessment. In a test or assignment&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><span class=\"interface\">Settings<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>panel, select<strong>\u00a0<span class=\"interface\">Add access code<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong><span class=\"interface\">Assessment security<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>section.<\/span><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2020-08\/ultra_instr_tests_code_settings_panel_0.png\" width=\"421\" height=\"289\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"image of Test setting panel\" \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span>At this time, access codes are generated randomly by the system. You can&#8217;t customize the access codes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The access code isn&#8217;t stored anywhere in the system. Students can only receive the access code from you or other roles you choose to give it to. You can change the access code as needed and let students know.<\/li>\n<li>Students can use the same code if they save the assessment and want to return later. Students don&#8217;t need the access code to view the grades and feedback you post.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>You can also add an optional description in the <strong>Description <\/strong>box at the bottom of the <strong>Settings <\/strong>panel. The description appears with the test title on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Course Content<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Adding a time limit by selecting the <strong>Time Limit<\/strong> setting option puts a restriction on how long a test can be open by a student before they must submit. The test attempts are saved and submitted automatically when time is up. You can also allow students to work past the time limit. <em>Note:<\/em> If you allow multiple attempts, the time limit applies to each attempt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"Creating-a-Test-Original\"><strong>Creating a Test (Original)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"Create-New-Test-Original\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Create a New Test<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Create a Test in the Original Course View\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hms51SQtYzY?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"interface\">From your course homepage, look for the <strong>Control Panel <\/strong>in the left hand navigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Select\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\"><strong>Course Tools<\/strong>, then<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"interface\">Tests, Surveys, and Pools <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"interface\">and finally <strong>Tests\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"interface\">to be brought to the Test tool area.<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"\/tech\/files\/2020\/07\/test_surveys_pool.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2020\/07\/test_surveys_pool.png\" alt=\"Tests, Surveys, Pools in Blackboard\" width=\"394\" height=\"342\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating a new test<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Tests<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>page, select<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Build Test<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>On the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Test Information<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>page, type a name. Optionally, provide a description and instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Select<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Submit<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>On the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Test Canvas<\/span>, from the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Create Question<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>menu,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Original\/Tests_Pools_Surveys\/Question_Types\" title=\"Question Types\">select a question type<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Create\/Edit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>page, provide the necessary information to create a question.<\/li>\n<li>Select<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Submit<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>When you have added all the questions you need, select<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">OK<\/span>. You can also set a password for more secure online testing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Force completion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you turn on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Force Completion<\/span>, students must complete the test when they launch it.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"emphasize\">Students may only access the test ONE TIME.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Save<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>function is available for students to save the questions as they work through them, but they may not exit and re-enter the test. In the instructions,<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Force Completion<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>is noted and explained to students. If you don&#8217;t turn on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Force Completion<\/span>, students may save their progress, navigate away, and return to complete the test.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-button=\"media_browser\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"9007add7-29bf-41fc-b6b0-133c1e0e078d\" data-langcode=\"en\" class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2019-11\/orig_instr_test_options_force.png\" width=\"202\" height=\"163\" alt=\"image of Force completion panel\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>If students accidentally close their browsers, leave the test page, or lose power or their internet connections, they can&#8217;t continue. They must contact you and ask for a<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"emphasize\">new<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>attempt.<\/p>\n<p>For these reasons, <strong>we do not recommend<\/strong> the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Force Completion<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>option. If necessary, it&#8217;s advised that students take the test on campus, connected to an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, and with a proctor. If issues occur, the proctor can reset the test.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emphasize\">Example: Force completion with timer<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students must finish the test after they begin. They can&#8217;t exit the test and return, even though time is left. If students have connectivity issues, they must contact you to reset a test with<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Force Completion<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emphasize\">Example: No force completion with timer only<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A student may lose internet connection for 10 minutes on a timed test. After the connection restores, the student can access the test and continue to work. With<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Auto-Submit<\/span>, this student will miss out on some work time. Without<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Auto-Submit<\/span>, the student can continue to work and you can check the student\u2019s completion time after submission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set timer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can set a timer to limit students\u2019 completion time. You can set the timer to auto-submit the test when the timer ends or allow students to continue working and manually submit. You can view students\u2019 completion times in their submissions.<\/p>\n<p>Select the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Set Timer<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>option and type the amount of time in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Minutes<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>box.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-button=\"media_browser\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.embedded\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"cdc4c0f7-207e-4ff5-9e3d-2c95e7cf3e35\" data-langcode=\"en\" class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/2019-11\/orig_instr_timer_auto_submit.png\" width=\"232\" height=\"130\" alt=\"image of the set-timer\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During a timed test, the time elapsed is displayed to students. Timer warnings appear at set increments when half the time remains down to 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emphasize\">If students save and exit the test, the timer continues<\/span>. Students can return to work on the test until they submit or the timer auto-submits, whichever comes first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Auto-Submit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you set the timer, you can turn on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Auto-Submit<\/span>. Tests are automatically saved and submitted when the time expires.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t turn on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Auto-Submit<\/span>, students have the option to continue when the time expires even beyond the 420-minute maximum timer length. Those tests appear with the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Needs Grading<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>icon in the Grade Center to alert you students used more time. The tests also appear with an<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">OVER TIME<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>label in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Test Information<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>area. The system doesn&#8217;t apply an automatic penalty for completion times that are over the limit. On a student&#8217;s submission page, you can adjust the grade based on the completion time.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"emphasize\">Example<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a student begins a test with a time limit of 60 minutes<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"emphasize\">without<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"interface\">Auto-Submit<\/span>. The student exits the test with half of the questions left. <strong>The timer doesn&#8217;t stop when the student exits.<\/strong> On Wednesday, the student returns to finish the test and submits it. Select <strong>No<\/strong> to hide the test to students until you are ready to release it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2014\/03\/linkavail.png\" alt=\"Test Availability setting\" width=\"443\" height=\"197\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75654 \" \/><\/li>\n<li>Using <strong>Multiple Attempts<\/strong> you can allow students to attempt the test as many times as you wish. Each attempt will be recorded in the Grade Center.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2014\/03\/multattempts.png\" alt=\"Multiple Attempts setting\" width=\"426\" height=\"183\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75656 \" \/><\/li>\n<li>When an exam is deployed in Blackboard with the <strong>Force Completion<\/strong> option checked, it requires students to complete the test on their first time opening it. If a student closes their browser or tab, experiences a browser or computer crash, or their connection to the Blackboard server times out, they will not be able to re-enter the test. \u00a0It is then up to the instructor to clear the student\u2019s exam attempt so the student can start a new attempt.<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2014\/03\/forcecomp1.png\" alt=\"Force Completion setting\" width=\"420\" height=\"185\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75635 \" \/><\/li>\n<li>Rather than using <strong>Force Completion<\/strong>, it is recommended that you make the exam timed by choosing the <strong>Set Timer<\/strong> option. The Timer feature records completion time for an exam. Setting the timer allows you to see how long a student spent on an exam, regardless of any connection issues. When <strong>force completion<\/strong> is disabled, the student can reenter the exam. The exam timer continues to record time on the backend even if the student has exited the attempt.One thing to keep in mind when using the timer is that the timer shown to students uses JavaScript and can be affected by the browser and computer settings. The official time is calculated on the Blackboard server. The timer begins when a student starts the assessment and ends when they click Submit. It is good practice to encourage your students to keep a separate timer when taking timed exams as the time displayed in the test status bar can be affected by browser and computer settings and may not always be accurate.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/tech\/files\/2014\/03\/settimer.png\" alt=\"Set Timer option \" width=\"603\" height=\"167\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-75658 \" \/><\/li>\n<li>When <strong>Auto-Submit<\/strong> is enabled the test will save and be submitted automatically when the time limit has been reached. Disabling this option gives the student a choice to continue working on the test once the time limit has passed. You can set one or two rules with the menus. You can&#8217;t choose some rules in combination. After you select a rule in the first menu, some may not appear in the second menu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>If rules conflict, the system grants the student or group of students the more permissive settings. Select more options to determine what else they see, such as the correct answers or your feedback.<\/p>\n<p><em>Students can\u00a0<strong>always<\/strong>\u00a0see their overall test scores. You can&#8217;t change that option from this page. If you don&#8217;t want them to see their scores yet, access the Grade Center column&#8217;s menu and hide the column from students. However, when you hide a test column from students, they see nothing about the test in\u00a0My Grades. When they access the test in the content area, they receive a message that says\u00a0<strong>when<\/strong>\u00a0they submitted their tests. No scores appear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are several options for the <strong>When<\/strong> setting. You must make a selection. Set when appropriate test results and feedback are shown to students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>After Submission<\/strong>: This option is the default.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One-time View<\/strong>: After students submit their tests or surveys, the selected results and feedback options are in effect for students to view ONCE. However, students can always view the scores they earned unless you hide the Grade Center column from students. Immediately after a student navigates away from the test or survey, any other results and feedback are restricted. You can change the setting or add another rule for a second viewing. A second rule is <b>not <\/b>combined\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Tests_Pools_Surveys\/Test_and_Survey_Options#one_time\">one-time view rule<\/a>\u00a0but is applied separately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>On Specific Date<\/strong>: View results and feedback after the selected date and time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>After Due Date<\/strong>: after the date indicated in the <strong>Due Date<\/strong> section of test settings<\/li>\n<li><strong>After Availability End Date<\/strong>: after the test is no longer available to students based on the <strong>Display Until<\/strong> date under the <strong>Test Availability<\/strong> section<\/li>\n<li><strong>After Attempts are graded<\/strong>: After all students submit the test or survey, and all attempts are graded, results and feedback are made available to students. If one or more students don&#8217;t submit an attempt, you must assign a grade of 0 so that all students can view the chosen results and feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are 6 main settings options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Score per question<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(Automatically set by default)<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Shows the overall test scores and the scores earned for each individual
