It is also encouraged to notify your instructors of your intended in-person attendance by using the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/inclasslfa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">InClassLfA app<\/a>. Because some parts of some L<em>f<\/em>A classes (e.g. group exercises) will be more effective if all students (resident and remote) are on Zoom, it is recommended that you bring to class your laptop and\/or your smartphone along with a headset so you can join Zoom. Please make sure that your equipment is fully charged before coming to class. If you have several classes on the same day, you may want to consider bringing along a portable charger for your laptop and\/or smartphone so these can remain charged throughout the day.<\/p>\n<h1>Preparing to learn remotely<\/h1>\n<p><span>We provide a variety of services to connect you with faculty and fellow students remotely so that learning can continue uninterrupted. \u00a0Faculty and staff should view our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/working-teaching-remotely\/\">working &amp; teaching remotely page<\/a> for more information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In preparation, you should\u00a0make sure you have tested your access to the following equipment:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/purchase\/personal\/shop\/\">Laptop<\/a> computer.<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Headset with a microphone<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Webcam \u2013 a camera may already be built into your laptop, but you can also use an external USB camera for video conferencing. If you\u2019re looking to purchase a camera, Zoom has the following <span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.zoom.us\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/201362023-System-Requirements-for-PC-Mac-and-Linux#camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendations<i class=\"icon-external-link external\"><\/i><\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span>Internet \u2013 either connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/networks\/wireless\/\">wireless network<\/a> in your residence hall, commercially provided (e.g., Comcast, Fios) in your off-campus apartment or home, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/how-to\/how-to-turn-your-phone-into-a-wi-fi-hotspot\">configure your phone to be a wireless hotspot<\/a>.\u00a0Many providers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/internet-providers\/isps-respond-to-coronavirus-raise-speeds-suspend-data-caps-keep-america-connected-pledge\/\">relaxing their policies and offering lower cost options<\/a> to help people stay connected. Students who receive a Federal Pell Grant will be eligible for a new FCC program called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/broadbandbenefit\">The Emergency Broadband Benefit<\/a>.\u00a0If you are having trouble with your home connection, please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/home-internet-connectivity\/\">troubleshooting tips<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be prepared! It\u2019s best to know these options will work for you before you actually need them. Test access to your equipment and resources before the need arises and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\">contact us<\/a> if you have any questions or issues.<\/p>\n<p>Contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/disability\/\">Disability &amp; Access Services<\/a>\u00a0<span>to learn more about the services and support they provide to ensure that students are able to access and participate in the opportunities available at Boston University.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"comm\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Communications<\/h2>\n<p><span>Remember to check your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/email\/google-mail\/\">BU email<\/a> regularly, at least once a day and preferably more. Professors are likely to send announcements that way as well as through the announcements area in Blackboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember that instructors are communicating with many students each semester and teach multiple courses at the same time, so when contacting your instructor always include your name, to which course the email refers, and a descriptive subject line.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to take advantage of any resources and meetings that are available outside of the class meeting times, such as your instructor\u2019s virtual office hours or events hosted by your academic department. And don\u2019t delay asking questions! Proactively email instructors or teaching assistants early with questions or requests to meet.<br \/>\n<a id=\"resources\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Access Course Resources<\/h2>\n<p>Log in to Blackboard to see the latest announcements, posts, and assignments for your courses. For help on the features in Blackboard please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/students\/\">getting started page<\/a> as well as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/students\/faq\/\">FAQ<\/a> for answers to common questions like how to submit an assignment through Blackboard. \u00a0Students taking classes in Questrom should login at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/questromtools.bu.edu\/\">questromtools.bu.edu<\/a> to access Sakai. Review the course syllabus and locate where to submit assignments or complete quizzes and exams ahead of time to be better prepared.<br \/>\n<a id=\"meet\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Meet Online<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/zoom\/\">Zoom Meetings<\/a><span> provides a robust platform for online collaboration and meetings, pairing full video and audio conferencing capabilities with content sharing and cloud recording. <\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonu.zoom.us\/signin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Log in to Zoom Meetings<i class=\"icon-external-link external\"><\/i><\/a><\/span><span> to automatically create your account. Students, faculty, and staff automatically receive fully licensed accounts. Once logged in, download the Zoom Client for Meetings from the <\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonu.zoom.us\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zoom Download Center<i class=\"icon-external-link external\"><\/i><\/a><\/span><span> on your home computer to access the full benefits of Zoom. Students in Digital Learning &amp; Innovation have created <a href=\"\/tech\/files\/2020\/04\/Remote-Learning-in-Zoom-for-Students.pdf\">Remote Learning in Zoom for Students<\/a> with lots of great information and tips. Use your Zoom account to connect with your classmates and peers, form a study group, or socialize and network with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/google-meet\/\">Google Meet<\/a>\u00a0(formerly Google Hangouts) is a simple platform designed to run an online meeting with minimal effort. Using only your web browser or a mobile device, meeting participants can share audio, video, and screens with colleagues and guests. We have information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/google-meet\/meet-remote-learning\/\">how to schedule and join meetings<\/a> using\u00a0Google Meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/microsoft-teams\/\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> combines modern online meeting technology with persistent chat (similar to Slack), file storage, and collaboration. The full functionality of teams is available to faculty and staff, but anyone can be invited to a Teams meeting. To get started you can <span><a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">log in to Microsoft Teams<\/a> from your web browser or d<\/span>ownload the Teams app<span> from <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft.<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"save\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Save Your Files<\/h2>\n<p>You can securely save files on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/storage-backup\/cloud-file-storage\/backup-your-data-with-bu-google-drive\/\">BU Google Drive<\/a>\u00a0so you can access them from anywhere. Your BU Google Drive o<span>ffers storage space with your BU account.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"software\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Software Resources<\/h2>\n<p>You can install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/desktop\/distribution\/microsoft\/studentoffice\/\">Microsoft Office<\/a> at no charge on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>BU students have access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/digital-multimedia-production\/adobe-creative-cloud\/\">Adobe Creative Cloud<\/a> tools. Access Adobe resources by filling out an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/digital-multimedia-production\/adobe-creative-cloud\/request\/\">Adobe Creative Cloud request<\/a>. Two tools, in particular, have a quick learning curve and enable you to create graphics, web-based presentations, and videos.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spark<\/strong> &#8211; Create <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LSkvc1IHFZo\">pages<\/a>, posts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/H6gWqMaHYwY\">videos<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/go.umd.edu\/SparkHelp\">Adobe Spark<\/a>. Access Spark post, page and video options at <a href=\"http:\/\/spark.adobe.com\/\">http:\/\/spark.adobe.com<\/a> and log in with your BU login (which will eliminate the appearance of \u201cAdobe watermarks\u201d on your work).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rush<\/strong> &#8211; Make videos on your computer or mobile phone using <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/premiere-rush\/how-to\/premiere-rush-fundamentals.html\">Adobe Rush<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Members of the BU community can also access the same software that is available in the BU Commons @ Mugar from anywhere in the world on their own device. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/desktop\/computer-labs\/commonfromanywhere\/\">BU Common from Anywhere<\/a> page to get started.<br \/>\n<a id=\"library\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Library Resources<\/h2>\n<p>You can easily access many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/\">BU Libraries resources<\/a> online with just your BU username and password. The library collection includes millions of electronically available items, including e-books, journal and newspaper articles, videos, and audio recordings. You can locate and access these electronic materials by searching the <a href=\"https:\/\/buprimo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo-explore\/search?vid=BU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">library catalog<\/a>. To find only items available electronically, choose the <em>Available Online<\/em> filter on the results page. For help with accessing library resources please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/askalibrarian.bu.edu\">askalibrarian.bu.edu<\/a> and refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.bu.edu\/c.php?g=679863&amp;p=4790303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Resources for Students in Online and Off-Campus Programs guide<\/a> for more helpful tips and resources for learning remotely.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"vpn\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Virtual Private Network (VPN)<\/h2>\n<p><span>Due to current capacity limitations, <\/span><b>please only connect to the VPN when using a service that requires VPN<\/b><span> and be sure to disconnect from the VPN when you are no longer using that service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please note that most BU and cloud resources, such as Blackboard, BUworks, Office 365, and BU Google Mail <strong>don&#8217;t\u00a0<\/strong>require the use of VPN.<\/p>\n<p>Services that <strong>do<\/strong> require the use of VPN include: General Purpose network drive (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/storage-backup\/network-file-storage\/\">GPNAS<\/a>), \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/research\/computation\/scc\/\">Shared Computing clusters (SCC)<\/a> scc4.bu.edu and scc-ondemand.bu.edu, and to connect remotely to an on campus computer using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/about\/security-resources\/bestpractice\/remote-desktop\/\">RDP for Windows<\/a> or ARD\/VNC for Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Services that require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/two-factor-vpn\/\">Two Factor VPN with Duo<\/a> include: Restricted Use network drive (RU-GPNAS),\u00a0 BUMC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/y-drive\/\">Y Drive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/software\/freezerpro\/\">FreezerPro<\/a>, and remote connections to computers at BUMC or HIPAA Components.<\/p>\n<p>BU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/\">Virtual Private Network (VPN)<\/a> creates a \u201ctunnel\u201d between your computer and the campus network that identifies you as a member of the Boston University community when you are not connected directly to the campus network, allowing you access to restricted networked resources. Most BU and cloud resources <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> require connecting to the VPN.
