Students should visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/learning-remotely\/\">learning remotely page<\/a> for more information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In preparation, you should\u00a0make sure you have tested your access to the following equipment at home:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Laptop or desktop computer.<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Microphone &#8211; this may be built into your laptop or computer, or you may use an external device such as a USB microphone or headset. If you&#8217;re looking to purchase a microphone, Zoom has the following <a href=\"https:\/\/support.zoom.us\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/201362023-System-Requirements-for-PC-Mac-and-Linux#usb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendations<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Webcam &#8211; a camera may already be built into your laptop, but you can also use an external USB camera for video conferencing. If you&#8217;re looking to purchase a camera, Zoom has the following <a href=\"https:\/\/support.zoom.us\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/201362023-System-Requirements-for-PC-Mac-and-Linux#camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendations<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Internet &#8211; either commercially provided (e.g., Comcast, Fios), or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/how-to\/how-to-turn-your-phone-into-a-wi-fi-hotspot\">configure your phone to be a wireless hotspot<\/a>. Many providers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/internet-providers\/isps-respond-to-coronavirus-raise-speeds-suspend-data-caps-keep-america-connected-pledge\/\">relaxing their policies and offering lower cost options<\/a> to help people stay connected. If you are having trouble with your home connection, please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/home-internet-connectivity\/\">troubleshooting tips<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be prepared! It&#8217;s best to know these options will work for you before you actually need them. Test access to your equipment and resources at home before the need arises and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\">contact us<\/a> if you have any questions or issues. We have a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/2020\/03\/09\/remote-readiness-consultations\/\">remote readiness consultation sessions<\/a> scheduled where you can bring in your laptop and get your questions answered on how to work from home.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not have equipment at home that meets these standards, please consult with your supervisor.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"working\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Working Remotely<\/h1>\n<p><a id=\"meet\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Meet &amp; Chat Online<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/microsoft-teams\/\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> combines modern online meeting technology with persistent chat (similar to Slack), file storage, and collaboration. The full functionality of teams is now available to faculty, staff, and students. To get started\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">log in to Microsoft Teams<\/a> from your web browser or d<\/span>ownload the Teams app<span> from <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft.<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/zoom\/\">Zoom Meetings<\/a> also provides a robust platform for online collaboration and meetings, pairing full video and audio conferencing capabilities with content sharing and cloud recording. Faculty, staff, and students automatically receive fully licensed accounts. Once <a href=\"http:\/\/bostonu.zoom.us\">logged in,<\/a> download the Zoom Client for Meetings from the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonu.zoom.us\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zoom Download Center<\/a><\/span> on your home computer to access the full benefits of Zoom.\u00a0We recommend taking a few extra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/zoom\/getting-started\/securing-your-meetings\/\">steps to help secure your Zoom meetings<\/a> to ensure that only people you invite attend.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"phone\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Access Your BU Phone\/Voicemail<\/h2>\n<p>Even when you are away from the office, there are several options for accessing your calls and voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>You can have your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/z-retired-pages\/user-guide\/faculty-and-staff\/personal-options\/email-delivery\/\">voicemails delivered by email<\/a>. Once configured, you will receive an email with an attached sound file whenever someone leaves a voicemail on your line. You will still be able to check and manage voicemails by calling 3-9999 on campus or 617-353-9999 when off campus.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/phone\/calling-services\/features\/single-number-reach-and-mobility\/\">Single Number Reach<\/a> feature will ring both your desk phone and another number simultaneously, allowing you to receive your calls both on and off campus.\u00a0Alternatively, you can choose to simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/phone\/calling-services\/features\/forward\/\">forward all your calls to another number<\/a> and not have it ring your office phone.\u00a0 <span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"duo\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Duo Two Factor Authentication<\/h2>\n<p><span>You are encouraged to set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/duo\/\">Duo Two Factor Authentication<\/a> on more than one phone in case you don&#8217;t have your mobile phone with you or are not at your office phone.\u00a0You can use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/duo\/manage-devices\/\">Manage Devices<\/a>\u00a0feature to add, remove, or change the devices that Duo can use to verify who you are. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When you are logging in, you can choose which line Duo will send the authentication request to (via smart phone app, SMS text message, or phone call depending on what you chose).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"vpn\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Virtual Private Network (VPN)<\/h2>\n<p><span>Due to current capacity limitations, <\/span><b>please only connect to the VPN when using a service that requires VPN<\/b><span> and be sure to disconnect from the VPN when you are no longer using that service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please note that most BU and cloud resources, such as Blackboard, BUworks, Office 365, and BU Google Mail <strong>don&#8217;t\u00a0<\/strong>require the use of VPN.<\/p>\n<p>Services that <strong>do<\/strong> require the use of VPN include: General Purpose network drive (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/storage-backup\/network-file-storage\/\">GPNAS<\/a>), \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/research\/computation\/scc\/\">Shared Computing clusters (SCC)<\/a> <span>logins to\u00a0<\/span>scc4.bu.edu, and to connect remotely to an on campus computer using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/about\/security-resources\/bestpractice\/remote-desktop\/\">RDP for Windows<\/a> or ARD\/VNC for Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Services that require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/two-factor-vpn\/\">Two Factor VPN with Duo<\/a> include: Restricted Use network drive (RU-GPNAS),\u00a0 BUMC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/y-drive\/\">Y Drive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/software\/freezerpro\/\">FreezerPro<\/a>, and remote connections to computers at BUMC or HIPAA Components.<\/p>\n<p>BU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/\">Virtual Private Network (VPN)<\/a> creates a \u201ctunnel\u201d between your computer and the campus network that identifies you as a member of the Boston University community when you are not connected directly to the campus network, allowing you access to restricted networked resources. Most BU and cloud resources <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> require connecting to the VPN. If you need to access resources that require connecting to VPN, please see our instructions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/use\/\">installing the VPN on your computer<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a id=\"cloud\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Store Files in the Cloud<\/h2>\n<p>When you save your files in one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/infrastructure\/storage-backup\/cloud-file-storage\/\">cloud file storage options<\/a>, you can always access the latest version of your files no matter where you&#8217;re located as long as you&#8217;re connected to the internet.<br \/>\n<a id=\"rcs\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Research Computing Support<\/h2>\n<p>Make sure that you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/research\/rcs-archive\/system-usage-old\/getting-started\/connect-ssh\/\">connect to the Shared Computing Cluster (SCC)<\/a> from your laptop or home computer. Additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/research\/\">SCC documentation<\/a> is available on TechWeb. Faculty can schedule a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/phpbin\/training\/register\/index.php?admingroup_id=51#course_id_1977\">L<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">f<\/span><\/em>A prototype classroom visit<\/a> where\u00a0IS&amp;T\u2019s Learning &amp; Event Technology Services (LETS) team will give you an opportunity to visit two classrooms that have been outfitted with technology enhancements to support L<em>f<\/em>A. You can also view a <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.bu.edu\/lfa-classroom-technology-checklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L<em>f<\/em>A Classroom Technology Checklist<\/a> which provides a step-by-step list of actions to take prior to entering an L<em>f<\/em>A classroom, as well as steps for getting set up once in the classroom. A one-page summary of the checklist is also <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.bu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Checklist-for-the-classrooms.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">available here<\/a> for you to print and take with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Provide Your Course Resources Online<\/h2>\n<p>If your course doesn&#8217;t already have a site on Blackboard, the first step is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/instructors\/guides\/create\/\">request a course site and set it up<\/a>. We have a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/instructors\/guides\/\">quick start guides for instructors<\/a> on how to use many of the features in Blackboard. If you need assistance with Blackboard or other educational technologies, please email <a href=\"mailto:askedtech@bu.edu\">askedtech@bu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Faculty at the Questrom School of Business should refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/questromworld.bu.edu\/faculty\/teaching\/#questromtools\">Questrom Teaching<\/a> page or email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:questromhelp@bu.edu\">questromhelp@bu.edu<\/a> for assistance in using Sakai.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Post key class materials<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/instructors\/develop\/\">Add content<\/a> such as your class notes, readings, and presentations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Communicate with your class through Blackboard<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Interact\/Announcements\">Announcements<\/a> are an ideal way to post time-sensitive information critical to course success. Add announcements for due dates for assignments and projects, changes to your syllabus, corrections\/clarifications of materials, and exam schedules.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Interact\/Messages\">Course messages<\/a> are private and secure text-based communication that occurs within your course among course members. Although similar to email, you must be logged in to a course to read and send course messages. Message activity remains inside the system, and you don&#8217;t have to worry about email addresses that may be incorrect or outdated.<\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Interact\/Discussions\">Online discussions<\/a> allow students to take time to ponder before they post ideas. You can observe as students demonstrate their grasp of the material and correct misconceptions. You can extend your office hours and reach students more often during the week so that learning is continuous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Interact\/Email\">The email tool<\/a> allows you to send email to other people in your course without launching a separate email program, such as Outlook or Gmail. You can send email to individual users or to groups of users.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Assess your students<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctl\/assessment-and-remote-teaching\/\">Assessment and Remote Teaching: Options and Opportunities<\/a> by the Center for Teaching &amp; Learning helps faculty think through the various options available.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Assignments\">Assignments<\/a> allow you to <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Assignments\/Create_and_Edit_Assignments\">create and edit assignments<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Assignments\/Grade_Assignments\">grade assignments<\/a> submitted by students.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Tests_Pools_Surveys\/Create_Tests_and_Surveys\">Tests and surveys<\/a> functionality allows you to measure student knowledge, gauge progress, and gather information from students. See our information on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/lms\/blackboard\/how-to\/test-settings\/\">deploy a test in Blackboard<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/assessment\/grading-support-tools\/turnitin\/blackboard\/\">Turnitin Feedback Studio<\/a> is a web application for the grading process that streamlines the grading process, making commenting more specific. Student work can also be compared against a database of websites and previous paper submissions from within the course and other courses, as well as other schools and universities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a id=\"record\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Record a Lecture<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/instructional-video\/my-media\/getting-started\/my-media-faqs\/using-kaltura-capture\/\">Kaltura Capture<\/a> allows you to easily record audio, video, and your computer screen, and integrates with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/instructional-video\/my-media\/\">My Media<\/a> or Media Gallery in Blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>If you already use Echo360 in your class, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/teaching\/instructional-video\/lecture-capture\/instructors\/personal-capture\/\">Echo360 Universal Capture<\/a> enables instructors to record audio, computer screens, and webcam video. These <span>asynchronous <\/span>recordings can be edited and saved on computers or shared on Blackboard for students.
