{"id":102048,"date":"2016-10-18T15:24:35","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T19:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/?page_id=102048"},"modified":"2016-10-24T15:29:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T19:29:25","slug":"wifi-calling-faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/phone\/bu-cellular-services\/faqs\/wifi-calling-faq\/","title":{"rendered":"Wi-Fi Calling FAQs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wi-Fi Calling allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network if cellular service isn&#8217;t available or you have a weak cellular signal.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Benefits of Wi-Fi Calling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>No additional charge with your existing voice plan and compatible device<\/li>\n<li>Make and receive calls with Wi-Fi using your phone number<\/li>\n<li>Wi-Fi calls to US numbers are free, even while traveling internationally<\/li>\n<li><span>Works with all iPhone 6 models and above, as well as most Android devices<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Activate\u00a0Wi-Fi Calling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><\/strong>If you are using a BU-issued mobile phone, please proceed to the <b>Enable Wi-Fi Calling on your Phone<\/b> section below to activate Wi-Fi calling on your device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you are using a personal phone please log into your service provider\u2019s web portal to verify whether or not HD Voice is activated on your phone plan. Any issues with your personal phone\u2019s web portal should be directed to your phone service provider\u2019s technical support.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To activate Wi-Fi Calling, you must be connected to your carrier\u2019s data network<\/li>\n<li>Provided\u00a0you have HD Voice (Advanced Calling 1.0.), Wi-Fi Calling on your cell phone\u00a0can be set up without visiting your\u00a0service provider\u00a0or calling to change your plan<\/li>\n<li>To verify HD Voice is activated:\n<ul>\n<li>Log into your wireless account<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Manage My Account<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Change Features<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add Advanced Calling<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Enable Wi-Fi Calling on your Phone<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the Home Screen.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the\u00a0<strong>Settings\u00a0<\/strong>tab<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Phone<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Tap <strong>Wi-Fi Calling<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Toggle\u00a0on <strong>Wi-Fi Calling on this phone<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the on-screen instructions to enter a U.S. address for use in the event of an emergency call (911).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiFiCalling_Enable.png\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiFiCalling_Enable.png\" alt=\"WiFiCalling_Enable\" width=\"500\" height=\"463\" class=\" wp-image-8800 alignnone\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once your address is saved, the Wi-Fi Calling setting will be activated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can verify your LTE over voice and data is active by visiting <strong>Settings<\/strong> &gt;\u00a0<strong>Cellular &gt; Cellular Data Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Turning on Wi-Fi Calling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Select\u00a0the<strong> Settings <\/strong>menu\u00a0on your\u00a0iPhone home screen.<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Phone<\/strong> in the Settings menu.<\/li>\n<li>Tap on<strong><strong> Wi-Fi Calling<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiiFiCalling_turn-On.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiiFiCalling_turn-On.png\" alt=\"WiiFiCalling_turn On\" width=\"500\" height=\"444\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8799\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong> Set up Wi-Fi Calling with your Emergency Address<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Toggle <strong>Wi-Fi Calling on This Phone<\/strong> to On.<\/li>\n<li>Read and agree to the <strong>Enable Wi-Fi Calling?<\/strong> pop-up.<\/li>\n<li>Enter an emergency address that will show up for 911.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiFiCalling_Emergency.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ist-news\/files\/2016\/10\/WiFiCalling_Emergency.png\" alt=\"WiFiCalling_Emergency\" width=\"500\" height=\"296\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8801\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong>\u00a0To allow Voice Calls over the Internet, your provider must allow 911 calls and include an address. \u00a0This address will be received by 911 should you call\u00a0911 over Wi-Fi and are unable to provide an address to the operator.
