Basic instructions – connect to BU (802.1x) and log in

Boston University’s wireless network is secured using the IEEE 802.1x standard. Most people will be able to connect to BU (802.1x) quickly and easily. When your computer or device finds BU (802.1x) on the network and presents it in your list of network choices, simply select it and log in to it, using your BU login name and Kerberos password.

Under most circumstances, your computer or device will now remember the BU (802.1x) choice and you shouldn’t need to select it again. If, for some reason, more detailed configuration instructions are needed, read on…

It’s also good to know…

  • For security reasons, and because they interfere with existing BU network addresses, personal¬†wireless access points are prohibited in the residences.
  • For best results,¬†when purchasing new devices, look for those that support 802.11a/g/n.¬† Devices that only support g/n (without the 802.11a/n – 5 Ghz.) are more likely to experience sluggishness in places where there is a high density of wireless device usage.
  • For certain configurations, to verify you are connected to the proper network, you may refer to the following public certificate:

As needed – Detailed instructions and troubleshooting

Set up BU (802.1x) using the applicable instructions below.

As needed – Set BU (802.1x) as the default SSID:

If you had previously used one of the other BU networks, your computer or device might try to connect to that network first. In order to be sure your computer connects by default to BU (802.1x), make sure you followed the related steps in the Troubleshooting section of our configuration documentation.
