Join BU Sustainability and the entire Boston University community for a month-long series of events that promote the importance of protecting our planet. Earth Day 365 will be held during the entire month of April.<\/strong> If you have questions about Earth Day 365, please contact the BU Sustainability team at sustainability@bu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This year’s events center on three different themes: What We Grow, What We Eat, What We Toss<\/strong>, Reuse and Repair<\/strong>, and Planet, People, Purpose<\/strong>. This year’s events are listed below by theme and date. More events are being added, so look to this page for updates.<\/p>\n

Beans for Bean - April 2<\/h4>

Bean is teaming up with Student Wellbeing to support the BU Food Pantry and students facing food insecurity. Stop by to say hi to Bean, help us fill a cruiser with shelf-stable food donations, and give back to the BU community. Everyone who donates will receive a limited-edition Bean card and be entered to win a private playdate with Bean. Join Kelly Alexander as she discusses her book, Truffles and Trash: Recirculating Food in a Social Welfare State.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Kelly Alexander is a writer and an anthropologist of food based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. For many years she was a senior editor at Saveur magazine, during which she became the youngest writer to win a James Beard Journalism Award for reporting. Her essays and articles on food have appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, The Oxford American, The New Republic, O: The Oprah Magazine, Newsweek, and many other publications. Her dissertation fieldwork focuses on a network of activists, cooks, and volunteers working to recirculate food waste in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n

On a fragile planet with spreading food insecurity, food waste is a political and ethical problem. Examining the collaborative, sometimes scrappy institutional and community efforts to recuperate and redistribute food waste in Brussels, Belgium, Kelly Alexander reveals it is also an opportunity for new forms of sociality. Her study plays out across a diverse set of locations\u2014including a food bank with ties to the EU, a social restaurant serving low-cost meals made from supermarket surplus by an emergent immigrant labor force, and a social inclusion program in an urban market with a \u201czero food waste\u201d pop-up caf\u00e9. Alexander argues that these efforts, in concert with innovative policy, effectively recirculate wasted food to new publics and produce what she terms a \u201cspectrum of edibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Alexander, these models face challenges\u2014including reproducing the very power dynamics across race, class, and citizenship status they seek to circumvent. They also mirror the challenges of the everyday operations of the European social welfare state, which is increasingly reliant on NGOs to meet provisioning promises. Yet she finds that they also move the needle forward to reduce food waste across one city, providing an example for major urban centers around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Shred + Recycle Event - April 7 and 8<\/h4>

In collaboration with BU Sustainability for Earth Day 365<\/span>, BU Information Security is excited to host the annual Spring Shred + Recycle Events\u00a0<\/span>on April 7th and 8th, 2026. Bring your sensitive documents and hard drives for shredding, along with any electronics and recyclables. Have questions about recycling or keeping your BU account secure? Our Sustainability and Information Security teams will be on hand to help!<\/span><\/p>\n

These events are open to\u00a0<\/span>all<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>faculty, staff, and students to safely & securely dispose of documents \u2013\u00a0any and all paperwork, especially those papers with personal or sensitive information \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and hard drives. You can also recycle batteries, lightbulbs, toner, cords, and electronics. Additional recycling opportunities for recycling textiles, books, and film plastics.<\/p>\n

Sustainable Restaraunt Nights - April 9, 16, 23, and 30<\/h4>
\n

BU Dining will hold a series of Restaurant Night events – restaurant-style, multi-course plated meals for a limited number of students – highlighting a diverse range of sustainable menus as a part of this year’s Earth Day 365 programming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets will be given on a first come-first serve basis at the location beginning at the \u201cdoors open\u201d time on the day of the event. The cost of admission is one meal swipe. Each event will last up to two hours; due to the multi-course menu attendees should expect to stay for the full duration of the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
