Let us know by emailing our Zero Waste Manager; <a href=\"mailto:srhealey@bu.edu\">Sarah Healey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Can I Recycle?<\/h2>\n<p>Chances are, somewhere nearby. There are tons of convenient locations across campus in residential, academic, and administrative buildings. All major residence halls have recycling bins available. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1brEiXdTUCDGfoFZwTFuZ2Jy-4lUiK9Y&amp;ll=42.34840617037976%2C-71.1064263&amp;z=15\">this map<\/a> to find the mixed recycling area nearest you.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1brEiXdTUCDGfoFZwTFuZ2Jy-4lUiK9Y&amp;ehbc=2E312F\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Big Belly solar-powered compactors throughout campus make it easy to sort waste into trash and single-stream recycling bins. These bins take five times the capacity of traditional trash bins. Use proper recycling practices to prevent contamination of the single-stream bin.<\/p>\n<h3>Quick Tips<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Help stop contamination! <strong>Don\u2019t put food waste, dirty containers, or trash in recycling bins<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><span> According to RecycleSmartMA, &#8220;Bottles and containers don&#8217;t need to be spotless, but they do need to be empty and free of most food residue. A quick wipe or rinse does the trick.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Don\u2019t worry about the numbers<\/strong>, <strong>focus on the shape<\/strong>. According to RecycleSmartMA, &#8220;If it is a clean and empty plastic bottle, jar, jug or tub, it can be recycled in Massachusetts.&#8221;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span> There are a few exceptions, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recyclesmartma.org\/results-materials\/#!rc-page=308883\">clear plastic cups<\/a><span>,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recyclesmartma.org\/results-materials\/#!rc-page=296066\">egg cartons<\/a><span>, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recyclesmartma.org\/results-materials\/#!rc-page=296063\">deli and fruit containers<\/a> can be recycled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span>Plastic and metal caps and lids should be reattached to empty containers before you recycle them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Plastic bags are not recyclable! When disposing of recyclables, skip the trash bag and put them directly in the bin.<\/li>\n<li>NEW IN 2026: Paper coffee cups are now recyclable! All cups made from paper (soda, coffee, compostable paper cups) can now go into the recycle bin. Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) serving Massachusetts can now propery manage this previously hard to sort material. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTIviljjvao\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\">Source<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><span>Plastic bottles, jars, jugs, and tubs can be recycled regardless of their color, <strong>as long as that color is not black<\/strong> or another really dark color. Please put black plastic containers in the trash.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Why? According to RecycleSmartMA, &#8220;<span>recycling facilities sort plastics by bouncing a beam of light off them. Since black plastic absorbs light, it can&#8217;t be sorted and goes straight through the system and off to landfill or incineration.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have a question about if an item is recyclable or not? Also, test your knowledge by taking the RecycleSmartMA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/recyclesmartma.org\/quiz-1-0\/\">quiz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h3>Keep an eye out for compostable plastics.<\/h3>\n<p>PLA Plastic and compostable products are <strong>not<\/strong> recyclable. These products \u2014 made from renewable resources such as corn, potatoes, and sugar \u2014 are designed to be processed with food waste and are labeled &#8220;compostable&#8221; or &#8220;biodegradable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dining Services has replaced many of its oil-based plastic containers with compostable ones. However, PLA Plastic is <strong>NOT<\/strong> able to be composted in BU&#8217;s Food Waste bins. Place these items in the trash.<\/p>\n<h3>The following items can be recycled when collected separately:<\/h3>\n<p><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Foam<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nRecyclable, dense, white polystyrene foam (styrofoam) will have a #6 \u2678 on it, is easily snapped, and will not bend. One common example is lab supply shipping coolers. Non-recyclable foam includes colored foam, ALL types of packing peanuts, soft\/flexible foams, or foam that \u201cbounces back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Batteries<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"\/sustainability\/files\/2024\/08\/Battery_Signage_01302024.pdf\" class=\"button-primary\">Battery Recycling Sign<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nBatteries are manufactured with materials that are potentially harmful to human health and the environment. Some of these materials are non-renewable resources like heavy metals, which can be reused again and again. For these reasons, proper recycling is important. At BU, alkaline\/nicad and lithium batteries must be collected separately from normal waste. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1brEiXdTUCDGfoFZwTFuZ2Jy-4lUiK9Y&amp;ll=42.34840617037976%2C-71.1064263&amp;z=15\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/maps.bu.edu\/?id=647#!ct\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this map<\/a> to navigate to your nearest drop off location: just choose which campus you&#8217;re on and select &#8220;Sustainability&#8221; from the menu options. Most BU Residential Life offices have battery disposal locations.<\/p>\n<p>If battery buckets in your area are full and a pickup is required, please call Environmental Health &amp; Safety at 617-353-4094 (CRC and Fenway) or 617-358-7840 (BUMC).<\/p>\n<p>If your department\/office would like to host battery recycling collection, please contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/staff-directory\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/staff-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environmental Health &amp; Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To recycle other types of batteries, such as lead acid, or to properly dispose of other hazardous materials, please contact your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Area Manager<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Electronics<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nWhen you can&#8217;t repair or refurbish your electronics, recycle them. Recycling electronics conserves natural resources, prevents hazardous waste from entering landfills, and results in lower carbon emissions during the manufacturing of new products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Large electronics<\/strong> (e.g., computers, printers): On the Charles River and Fenway Campuses, contact your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\">Area Manager<\/a> to schedule a pickup. If you have more than 15 computers or large electronics to recycle, please submit an FSR to BU Trucking and Grounds to schedule a pickup. On the Medical Campus, contact BUMC IT through their recycling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/bumc-it\/request\/recycle\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/it\/support\/bumc-it\/request\/recycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pick up request<\/a>. If your equipment is too large to be taken by IT, you can submit a work order in <a href=\"http:\/\/facilities.bu.edu\/camms\/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fcamms%2fDefault.aspx\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/facilities.bu.edu\/camms\/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fcamms%2fDefault.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAMMS<\/a> to have it picked up by BUMC Facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Small electronics<\/strong> (e.g., headphones, light bulbs, mercury-containing devices such as thermostats and thermometers): On the Charles River and Fenway Campuses, contact your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpo\/who-we-are\/operations-services\/custodial-operations\/area-managers\/\">Area Manager<\/a>. On the Medical Campus, contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/\">Environmental Health &amp; Safety<\/a>. Please be careful when handling some of these items as they may contain hazardous materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell phones<\/strong>: On the Charles River and Fenway Campuses, deliver to the IT Help Center at 179 Amory Street, or Recycling at 120 Ashford Street, Room 218. On the Medical Campus, contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environmental Health &amp; Safety<\/a> to get a prepaid cell phone recycling bag.<\/p>\n<p>Before donating or recycling personal electronics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/information-security\/security-for-everyone\/how-to-safely-dispose-of-your-cell-phone\/\">remove all personal data\/information as needed<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Ink and Toner Cartridges<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nBU partners with WB Mason on an ink and toner recycling program.
