2024 Recipients
Noah Sorin
Noah’s dedication to environmental stewardship stems from a profound commitment to community service, shaping his values and life trajectory. His passion for innovation and entrepreneurship led him to establish Idori, a social enterprise where children experience the beauty of nature. Through books, stuffed animals, and a proven learning framework, children are empowered to be agents of change for environmental issues. Noah developed a partnership with the Boston Outdoor Preschool Network to prove it works. This passion project has not only garnered national attention but also serves as a beacon of innovative, sustainable business practices on our campus.
Noah’s ability to mobilize people around sustainable causes is truly remarkable, and his peers view him as a leader and role model. As co-president of the Entrepreneurship Club, Noah organized the first Sustainability Innovation Conference. He also received funding through the BU Campus Climate Lab to develop a Miyawaki Forest, recognizing the need for more impactful green space on campus. These projects and more leave a lasting legacy of sustainability awareness and action within our community.
Noah’s exemplary leadership, innovative projects, and unwavering commitment to sustainability have made a lasting impact on the BU community and beyond. He will certainly be a passionate advocate and a catalyst for positive change into the future.
Sofiya Filippova
Sofiya has championed an unwavering commitment to sustainability and climate innovation throughout her tenure at Boston University. Sofiya’s strong commitment to addressing environmental challenges shines in both her extracurriculars and research.
Through research at the Computational Energy Lab, Sofiya developed an air pollution monitoring device. In the Terrestrial Carbon Lab, she demonstrates skill in instrument engineering. She has taken every opportunity to learn about and gain experience in energy technologies and climate change, showing her dedication to solving real-world challenges
Serving as president of both Engineers Without Borders and the Environmental Student Organization, Sofiya worked tirelessly to plan, fund, and execute sustainability projects, clean-ups, and lectures at BU and abroad. She led travel preparations to manage rainwater catchment systems in Kenya and advocated for expanding the Generation Conscious laundry refill station on campus. Sofiya has transcended departmental barriers across BU to prove and make palatable the notion that sustainability is not just a niche interest but a necessary focus for all.
Sofiya’s advocacy for engineering sustainable solutions, coupled with her organizational and peer leadership, exemplifies the essence of a true sustainability leader.
2023 Recipients
Amir Wilson
Amir is a creative, energetic, and action-oriented sustainability leader at Boston University. His involvement in sustainability on campus and in Boston makes him a student who brings climate action to life in the real world.
- He has been a part of multiple research teams through the Sustainability Innovation Seed Grant and the Campus Climate Lab, advancing knowledge in support of BU’s Climate Action Plan.
- Amir and others developed a climate-friendly icon for BU Dining Services, informing the community of menu items’ carbon intensity.
- He worked with another group of peers to investigate the feasibility of rain gardens as resilient infrastructure, discovering that the University could divert two million gallons of runoff annually.
- He led a project documenting old gas lamps in Boston’s historic neighborhoods and developed an integrated map tracking potential natural gas leaks that threaten local air quality and urban tree growth. He presented this information to Mothers Out Front, who used Amir’s research to petition the City to change from gas to LED lamps.
Amir is a leader in our student community through the Earth House living-learning community, the BU Zen Mindfulness Community, and as a Resident Assistant. His action-oriented and energetic spirit personifies what it means to be a Sustainability Leader.
Eden Floyd
Eden is deeply passionate about sustainability and wants to share that passion by fostering a community that works towards a just and sustainable future.
- Eden has been an active member of the Environmental Student Organization, serving as its Secretary and President. Through this work, she collaborated with Student Government’s Department of Environmental Affairs to implement and pilot the first sustainable laundry soap refill station on campus.
- Eden and a group of fellow students developed a climate-friendly icon for BU Dining Services, informing the community of menu items’ carbon intensity.
- She also developed a database of sustainability resources for BU students, furthering awareness of sustainable living on campus.
- Eden has also worked toward her passion outside BU, interning for organizations such as Green Energy Consumers Alliance, Climable, and startup Jellyfish. She conducted research on transportation policies and public knowledge of electric vehicles, developed a high school-level curriculum on renewable energy and energy efficiency, and developed a food products database for an app that scores groceries based on emissions and nutrition.
Eden is a Sustainability Leader because she is not simply acting by herself; she creates a welcoming space for her peers to join her in crucial change-making. It is this dedication to community that will bring us closer to a sustainable future.
Joy Pereira
After traveling to Copenhagen, a global superpower in sustainable development, Joy was fueled to instill passion, hope, and confidence into every member of the student body. Joy set personal goals: generate awareness, acknowledge inaction, and open the door for her fellow students.
- In her Leadership Challenge class, she and teammates developed “Stop the Clock BU,” a reminder of how much work is yet to be done to protect our future. The team received funding from the Sustainability Innovation Seed Grant and worked with BU Arts Initiative to display the clock.
- Seeing the need for a safe space for students to express worries on the climate crisis, Joy also founded Climate Cafés. These events meet an important social-emotional need, providing a forum to get more students involved in the climate movement.
- Joy’s involvement as the ESO Social Media Director and BU Closet President are platforms where she shared information such as the dangers of fast fashion.
- As a BU Sustainability intern, she fostered long-term connections between environmental and identity clubs, and others beyond BU.
With a topic as difficult as climate change, it takes a special person to bring different constituencies together to take action. Joy looks for opportunities to make a difference, seizes upon them, and inspires others to help her achieve tangible goals. That is why Joy is a Sustainability Leader.
2022 Recipients
Keely Bombard
Keeley has been a champion of inclusivity and a major proponent of sustainability action on this campus. Her involvement in several student-led projects, research initiatives, and the Environmental Student Organization will leave a lasting, meaningful impact on our community.
- Served as Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Environmental Student Organization (ESO)
- Her research, alongside student Gayatri Sundar Rajan, and professors Michael Gevelber & Nathan Phillips, aims to significantly reduce BU’s emissions through electrification of campus buildings and won the students the inaugural Anthony Janetos Climate Action Prize
- Received funding to develop a Recyclopedia app to educate BU students on waste sorting, combining efforts through the Sustainability Innovation Seed Grant, Campus Climate Lab, and BU Spark!
- Led a multi-year effort to develop a campus mural focused on indigenous climate justice and collaborated with ESO and The Urban Garden Initiative to convene dozens of students at a collective painting day
Throughout each of her leadership positions, she has created an inclusive space for students to feel welcomed and to learn together. Her hardworking attitude and belief in herself embody the spirit of a Student Sustainability Leader.
Neha Chinwalla
Neha has been a champion of the environment and a major proponent of sustainability action on this campus. Her involvement in Student Government as the Director of Environmental Affairs, an inaugural Resident Sustainability Leader, and BU Sustainability events intern has reflected her unwavering commitment to sustainability on campus.
- Serving as the Director of Environmental Affairs for BU Student Government, Neha created several new initiatives and educated students through her social media #sustainabilitysunday series and vegetarian cookbook
- Collaborated with Residence Life as a Resident Sustainability Leader to host educational events and increase sustainability awareness among residents at Warren Towers
- Coordinated BU Sustainability’s first environmental justice events through her role as events and research intern as well as revamped the Environmental Leadership Network
- Held several off-campus internships focused on climate action including Solstice Power Technologies, MACDC, and Climable.org
Neha is thoughtful, hardworking, and endlessly committed to the climate crisis and building a better tomorrow. Her humble demeanor and hardworking attitude truly embody the spirit of a Student Sustainability Leader.
2021 Recipients
Aditya Jain
Aditya’s commitment to sustainability is exemplified by founding two sustainable food programs, being recognized with the 2019 Changemaker Challenge Winner by the T-Mobile Foundation, and conducting professional research within the field.
- Worked in partnership with BU Dining to establish the FEAST Committee, a program dedicated to educating students on low-carbon diets and local solutions to food sustainability
- Expanded the FEAST Committee to other colleges and high schools around the country, exemplifying outstanding leadership and commitment to widespread change
- Founded 1WeekBU, encouraging students to go vegan/vegetarian for one week, with the philosophy that many small actions can add up to big change
He will further this work at Harvard Medical School, studying the relationship between climate change and public health.
Bolaji Olagbegi
Her positivity, initiative, and collaborative spirit make Bolaji an impressive leader. She continuously demonstrates her passion for environmental justice and equity and is a force that drives institutional change in her community.
- Executive board member for Students for a Just and Stable Future, mobilizing student action for institutional change and serving as a Better Future Project Fellow
- Served as a member of the City of Boston’s Community Choice Aggregation Working Group, working with government officials to implement clean energy initiatives
- As a research fellow at BU, she studied green energy potential in communities in the City of Boston
- Proposed, designed, and led a speaker series centered around environmental justice integration in the workplace
This activist is passionate about educating her peers on environmental justice and is a sought-after speaker at various New England–based events.
2020 Recipient
Julia Dayan
Julia demonstrated leadership and dedication to sustainability through internships and volunteering, and her personal actions.
- Founding member of Epsilon Eta, BU’s first multigender Environmental Professional Fraternity
- Played a key role in launching the Cleantech Club at BU, where she implemented ‘Cleantech Talks’, bringing cleantech entrepreneurs and industry experts to campus
- Involved with Environmental Student Organization (ESO)
2019 Recipients
Julia Nassar
Julia has shown continued enthusiasm for, and commitment to, sustainability throughout her time at Boston University.
- Served as president of Environmental Student Organization
- Collaborated with ESO peers to establish the “Mug Spot” in the Questrom Starbucks to promote the use of reusable mugs in place of disposable coffee cups
- Led the distribution of 300 labels for towel dispensers throughout campus to encourage conservation
- Volunteered and interned with organizations including the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and P3 in New Zealand demonstrate dedication extending beyond BU to the broader world
Masha Vernik
Masha stood out as a campus leader: advocating for fossil fuel divestment, advancing a Green New Deal with Sunrise, and supporting BU’s Climate Action Plan adoption.
- As the Earth House RA, facilitated a community of individuals with shared interests in living sustainably, fostering relationships and encouraging group projects
- During the Merrimack Valley gas disaster, volunteered as a translator to help families in need receive necessary services.
2018 Recipients
Victoria Chaney
Victoria has been a student sustainability leader in many capacities on campus and through her work at BU Sustainability.
- Improved the University’s position as a leader in campus sustainability as an intern at BU Sustainability, as a Sustainability Ambassador for Orientation, and represented the University at the annual conference for Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
- President of the US Green Building Council Student Organization
- Spearheaded a collaboration with other sustainable student organizations at BU and other nearby universities, building bridges to the green building professional community
- Contributed to the BU community through many other activities: co-founder and president of the Undergraduate Architecture Association, Sustainability Student Leaders Symposium speaker, FYSOP staff leader, Habitat for Humanity BU Chapter, Alternative Service Break volunteer, and First-Year Experience peer mentor
Bridget Marie Baker
Bridget has demonstrated the utmost in sustainability leadership both at Boston University and beyond.
- Served as sole undergraduate representative on BU’s Climate Action Plan Task Force, culminating in the Board of Trustees’ adoption of a bold plan to reduce carbon emissions
- Served two years as the resident assistant of Earth House, and has been a core leader in this pioneering living-learning community
- Contributed to the Greater Boston community advocating with Environment Massachusetts, as well through student-led initiatives of the BU Community Service Center and Environmental Student Organization
- Took part in field research in the Yanomami indigenous territory in the Brazilian Amazon in summer 2017. Her positive impression on the Yanomami community generated excitement for further collaboration with BU—as manifested by two Yanomami women leaders visiting BU in December 2017
2017 Recipients
Rachel Eckles
Rachel has been a committed leader for sustainability on campus and off.
- Worked with the City of Boston and Boston University’s Climate Action Plan Task Force and helped both understand the challenges of measuring the climate impacts from the waste stream. Her work has informed the approach both the City and University will take to address waste reduction and diversion
- Led the BU chapter of Students for a Just and Stable Future
- Increased environmental awareness on campus through the divestment movement. In addition to generating student support for BU’s divestment from fossil fuel interests, the campaign led the Board of Trustees of Boston University to launch a Climate Action Plan
- Active in the Community Service Center as another means of giving back to the campus community
Ryan Peters
Ryan epitomizes leadership in sustainability, with a deep understanding of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a society and understanding Boston University’s contribution to these emissions.
- Advocated for clean energy on and campus. Spearheaded the PowerDialog to bring students from across the Commonwealth to BU to meet with legislators and build support for clean energy legislation
- For two years, provided leadership through the BU Student Government Department of Environmental Affairs and USGBC Students
- As an intern, improved the University’s sustainability reporting, and his analysis has supported the development of the University’s Climate Action Plan
- Enabled BU Sustainability to sell the University’s carbon reductions through the Chevrolet Campus Clean Energy Campaign and fund the Sustainability Revolving Loan Fund
- Launched BU’s Nitrogen Footprinting Pilot, working with Professor Michael Gevelber to improve BU’s energy efficiency analytics, and helped facilitate renewable energy efforts
2016 Recipients
Lindsey Chew
Lindsey has inspired fellow students, faculty, staff, and global sustainability leaders to address the urgency of moving to a clean energy future through thoughtful advocacy and personal interactions.
- Co-developed and moderated the #CleanEnergyU virtual and in-person dialogues at events from Earth Day to ClimateWeek NYC
- Represented Boston University at the White House for the American Campuses Act On Climate panel leading up to COP21 in Paris and helped develop digital and social media communications for that event and others
- Led FYSOP groups and coordinated the Northeast EcoRep Symposium
Andrew Cho
Andrew has accomplished a great deal in his four years at Boston University.
- As president of the Warren Towers Residence Hall Council, engaged peers to promote sustainable living and prioritized initiatives that fostered it, from advocating for a water bottle filling station to implementing recycling on every floor.
- Co-led the Warren Towers Patio Project with Claire Richer, the prior year’s awardee, and many BU administrators to reopen and revitalize the 4th-floor patio to give residents direct access to the outdoors
- Served as president of the Residence Hall Association Overarching Executive Council and as Student Body president where he led from a platform of sustainability
2015 Recipient
Claire Richer
Claire pioneered in so many ways that she was part of the inspiration for the Student Sustainability Leader award.
- Brought WeWatt electric charging bikes to BU – her idea to take a room off the grid. She found the solution, found the funding, coordinated the logistics, engaged the community…and created emPOWERme.
- Represented the student voice on the BU Board of Trustees’ Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible Investing
- President of BU’s Students for a Just and Stable Future

- Member of the BU Women’s Rowing Team
- Co-led the Warren Towers Patio Project, working through the BU administration, Residence Life, Residence Hall Association, Facilities Management & Planning, and others to reopen and revitalize the 4th-floor patio at Warren Towers, which had been closed for more than seven years. Claire used her classroom knowledge to design a relaxed living space where residents could enjoy the outdoors. She and a peer engaged other students in the implementation. They presented their proposal to important stakeholders, and completed the project during Earth Week and BU’s Global Day of Service in 2014
