BUMC Finished First in MassCommute Bicycle Challenge


Top MCBC riders received a Bay State Bike Week shirt, bell and leg reflectors.

Boston University’s Medical Campus finished in first place in the The MassCommute Bicycle Challenge (MCBC), a week-long, FREE and friendly competition among  Massachusetts businesses, educational institutions, and municipalities. The 2014 MCBC took place during Bay State Bike Week, May 10th – 18th. Close to 100 BUMC students and staff, BMC staff and BHCHP staff took part in this year’s Challenge. Team BUMC finished 1st in school teams in the 1001-5000 size with 2197.98 miles! Eric Stratton lead Team BUMC with 189 miles. Linda King lead Team BMC with 175 miles. Bill Minihan lead Team Boston Healthcare For The Homeless with 140 miles.

TranSComm, the transportation management association that coordinates the transportation needs of the Medical Center community, hosted a number of events during Bike Week such as a luncheon bike ride to the Chicken and Rice Guys food truck for some of the top mileage riders. According to Ananth Pandian, communications coordinator for TranSComm, his office supports the challenge every year because it is a great way to promote green transportation.

Daniel Kent, employment specialist in Human Resources on the Medical Campus agreed.

“I’ve been biking for the last 9 years and only recently did I hear about challenge, this year, and I deiced to commit to this challenge and I biked over 100 miles. [The challenge] gave me a change to get back on the bike and encouraged me to use alternate forms of transportation within Boston”.

Kent also it inspired him to encourage his coworkers to try alternative means of transportation as well.


After the MCBC ended, TranSComm hosted a Thank You Luncheon for all of the BUMC, BMC, and BHCHP riders.


Attendees also won raffle prizes such as bike locks, tool kits, light set, MCBC shirts, a free year of Hubway, a free year of Bike Cage access and a helmet!
