Green Department Certification LITE
Boston University Sustainability is pleased to announce the launch of Green Department Certification 2.0 LITE, debuting Fall 2026 — a new pathway that extends the benefits of the university’s Green Department Certification program to departments of every size.
Since its introduction, the Green Department Certification program has enabled departments across the university to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, directly supporting Boston University’s Climate Action Plan. The program has proven to be an effective framework for departments to evaluate their environmental impact and take meaningful, measurable action in the workplace. Recognizing that departments vary widely in size and available staffing, the university has developed GDC LITE to ensure that department size is not a barrier to participation.
Program Overview
GDC LITE preserves the core structure of Green Department Certification 2.0, including its point-based, cumulative framework, while reducing the scope of required tasks and lowering the total points needed to achieve certification. This adjustment allows smaller departments to pursue certification in a manner proportionate to their available resources, without compromising the integrity or purpose of the program.
Certification Process
Departments pursuing GDC LITE will follow a streamlined version of the standard certification process:
- Establish a Green Team. As with the full certification program, participation begins with the formation of a green team to guide the department’s sustainability initiatives and sustain long-term engagement.
- Complete the Sustainability Checklist (LITE). Departments will complete a condensed checklist assessing sustainable practices across core categories, including energy use, Zero Waste, sustainable purchasing, etc. The reduced point threshold allows departments to prioritize initiatives most feasible for their team size.
- Submit for Review and Recognition. Once the checklist is complete, departments submit it to the Sustainability team for review. Departments that meet the reduced point threshold will be recognized as Green Department Certified (LITE) and receive a laser engraved bamboo plaque to showcase and commemorate their commitment to sustainability.

By offering a scalable path to certification, the university aims to broaden participation in its sustainability efforts and further its progress toward the goals outlined in the Climate Action Plan.
