Vincent Machozi, AA (\u201815) Colloquium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Abednego Musau (\u201828)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy are you killing me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These were the last words of Father Vincent Machozi, AA (\u201815) questioning his killers on March 20, 2016, in Katolu village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Born and raised in Vitungwe-Isale in North Kivu, and a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/assumption.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Augustinians of the Assumption<\/a>, Machozi rose to become a champion of justice. He was a courageous voice in the region that borders Rwanda and Uganda, where armed groups terrorized communities in their struggle to control lucrative local coltan mines, which are integral in the production of cellular and mobile devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through his website, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beni Lubero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Fr. Machozi documented atrocities and exposed human rights abuses in the DRC. In the middle of his doctoral studies at the Boston University School of Theology (BUSTH), he made the difficult decision to leave his studies and return home, unwilling to watch from afar as his community suffered under the violence and exploitation of militant groups. After returning, Machozi was elected president of the Nande community which is a Bantu ethnic group constituting over 60% of the population in North Kivu, DRC. He continued with his call of advocating for justice for his people despite growing threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fr. Photo by Inyeop Choi (&#8217;26).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That question dominated the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/research\/fr-vincent-machozi-colloquium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fr. Vincent Machozi Colloquium<\/a> at BUSTH held on February 26 -28, 2026. In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9SkrGMNLWb8?si=TCE2FWnnjYyJZxYu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening plenary address<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/profile\/dana-l-robert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dana L. Robert<\/a> referred to Machozi as a \u201cmartyr,\u201d which means \u201cwitness.\u201d She further stated that, \u201cMachozi\u2019s witness was not confined to the manner of his death. His Christian faith, scholarship, and activism were of one piece. His academic work on peacebuilding in the DRC informed his public advocacy; his documentation of abuses flowed from deep theological conviction. For Machozi, theology refused to remain abstract.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The colloquium\u2019s theme \u201cEcologies of Peacemaking\u201d further broadened this vision. One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Ambaye Ogato, the Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, emphasized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kQLsvVRtc9o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in his plenary address <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that sustainable peace demands inclusive dialogue that values every person\u2019s contribution, even that of one\u2019s enemies. He persuaded the attendees that, \u201cpeacebuilding demands courageous listening and the difficult work of imagining a shared future across deep divisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe true significance of love, the true significance of peace, is only revealed in the very process, in the very attempt to realize it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third keynote speaker, Father Dr. Emmanuel Katongole, Professor of Theology and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, affirmed this conversation by insisting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OlxqL7W5gNc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during his address<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on \u201csocial love\u201d and the cultivation of institutions that embody love in public life and make peaceful coexistence possible. \u201cThe true significance of love,\u201d he said, \u201cthe true significance of peace, is only revealed in the very process, in the very attempt to realize it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60011\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" class=\"wp-image-60011 size-large\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-636x425.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/files\/2026\/03\/DSC_2219-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor of Philosophy, Theology, &amp; Ethics and of Computing &amp; Data Sciences Wesley Wildman speaks with Rev. Photo by Inyeop Choi (&#8217;26).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The themes of the Machozi Colloquium intertwine well with the Boston University School of Theology\u2019s distinctive mission. During the colloquium, dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/profile\/g-sujin-pak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G. Sujin Pak<\/a> emphasized \u201cT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he convergence of social ethics, peacemaking, and ecological justice with attention to global partnerships is a unique strength of BU School of Theology. These particular sets of commitments are not only part of STH\u2019s legacy\u2014which Dana Robert\u2019s lecture so beautifully depicted\u2014they are ongoing core elements of its DNA. A hopeful part of STH\u2019s mission is to convene interdisciplinary conversations for vision, collaboration, and impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Machozi Colloquium, organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/research\/fr-vincent-machozi-colloquium\/planning-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BUSTH faculty team<\/a> of Associate Dean Nicolette Manglos-Weber, Prof. James McCarty, Prof. Filipe Maia, and Prof. Rebecca Copeland, will be held every three years, ensuring that his legacy shapes future generations committed to justice and peace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Top banner image: Dr. Emmanuel Katongole, Professor of Theology and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, gives his plenary address on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
