{"id":1984,"date":"2009-10-08T11:27:26","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T15:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2009-10-08T11:27:26","modified_gmt":"2009-10-08T15:27:26","slug":"biblical-sexuality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/biblical-sexuality\/","title":{"rendered":"Biblical Sexuality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/sth\/files\/2009\/10\/jennifer_knust_v.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1985\" src=\"\/sth\/files\/2009\/10\/jennifer_knust_v.jpg\" alt=\"jennifer_knust_v\" width=\"300\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a>In 1975, when Virginia\u2019s sodomy law was challenged, a federal court upheld the statute, arguing that it was rooted in Judaic and Christian law \u2014 and quoted Leviticus as justification.<br \/>\nIt took 28 years before that argument became moot: in 2003 the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated sodomy laws across the United States, including Virginia\u2019s \u2014 a year after Massachusetts had struck down its sodomy laws.<br \/>\nThis wasn\u2019t the first time Biblical texts were invoked to justify modern laws, and it won\u2019t be the last, says Jennifer Knust, an assistant professor at the School of Theology.<br \/>\nKnust\u2019s 2005 book <em>Abandoned to Lust: Sexual Slander and Ancient Christianity<\/em> (Columbia University Press) examines the use of sexualized vocabulary by Christian authors from Paul to Irenaeus of Lyons.
