According to a National Poll on Healthy Aging survey, 75% of adults over 50 reported experiencing a scam attempt, with one in three falling victim to a scam. BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) PHD student Megan Nizza, who also works at the school&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cader-ssw.bu.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Aging &amp; Disability Education &amp; Research,<\/a>\u00a0encourages victims of financial scams to share their experiences and discusses how important it is that their loved ones remain supportive and understanding to alleviate feelings of shame.<\/p>\n<p>Excerpt from \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sponsored.bostonglobe.com\/tufts-health-plan\/scams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Protect Yourself from Today\u2019s Most Common Financial Scams<\/a>\u201d by Mariya Greeley:<\/p>\n<p>Nizza encourages people to talk openly about scams, especially with loved ones. If you share you\u2019ve clicked on a suspicious link or answered a call you regret, it helps reduce stigma.<\/p>\n<p>If your loved one has been the victim of a scam, \u201cIt\u2019s really important not to re-victimize and not use victim blaming language,\u201d Nizza says. \u201cYou want to be really careful about the words that you use and the way you say things because they can feel shame pretty acutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try to alleviate some of the stigma by making sure your loved one knows they\u2019re not alone.
