{"id":70625,"date":"2025-02-20T14:11:32","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T19:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/?p=70625"},"modified":"2025-02-20T17:02:27","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T22:02:27","slug":"madeline-ray-dual-degree-alum-receives-fulbright-award-research-migrants-access-healthcare-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/madeline-ray-dual-degree-alum-receives-fulbright-award-research-migrants-access-healthcare-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"Madeline Ray, Dual Degree Alum, Receives Fulbright Award for Research on Migrants\u2019 Access to Healthcare in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Madeline Ray (MSW\u201918, MPH\u201919), an alum of Boston University\u2019s dual degree program in social work and public health \u2013 completed at BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) and BU School of Public Health (BUSPH) \u2013 received a prestigious Fulbright Research Award to examine healthcare access for non-Spanish-speaking migrants in Mexico. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>In collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Salud P\u00fablica, Ray conducted her research in Mexico from September 2023 to May 2024, carrying out observation and intervention aimed at improving care for non-Spanish speakers, including migrants arriving from Haiti, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment70630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment70630\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-650x488.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" class=\"wp-image-70630 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-650x488.jpeg 650w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3-1200x900.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/Clinica-5-Centro-3.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment70630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Madeline Ray<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>The research was inspired by her field placement at the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights which she completed during her time as a dual degree student at BUSSW. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our caseload was mostly African asylum seekers,\u201d Ray said. \u201cI soon realized that some of them had flown directly into Logan Airport to start their asylum claim, while others had walked through all of Latin America &#8230; I wanted to know more about how Mexican institutions [attended] this group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMexico has a strong public health sector, and they have done some impressive work adapting to meet the needs of completely new migrant populations,\u201d Ray added. \u201cThe Fulbright was an amazing opportunity to pursue these questions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment70634\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment70634\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/INSP-selfie-2-477x636.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" class=\"wp-image-70634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/INSP-selfie-2-477x636.jpeg 477w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/INSP-selfie-2-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/INSP-selfie-2-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2025\/02\/INSP-selfie-2.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment70634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Madeline Ray<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Ray\u2019s master\u2019s degree in social work was critical to her success in conducting the research. \u201cI think social workers make the best researchers,\u201d said Ray. \u201c[It\u2019s] because they are always grounded in human experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Now back in Chicago, Ray is working on publishing her findings and continuing the work she spearheaded with her Fulbright award as a contractor for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.borderhumanitarianhealth.org\/\"><span>Border Humanitarian Health Initiative<\/span><\/a> where she develops and delivers training on language access, culture, and anti-racist practice for Mexican healthcare practitioners in Tijuana and Ciudad Ju\u00e1re, in partnership with Colegio de la Frontera Norte.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ray previously served as a senior project manager for Partners in Health, health data specialist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ciswh.org\/\"><span>Center for Innovation in Social Work &amp; Health<\/span><\/a> at BUSSW, and evaluation project lead at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities.
