They call for the Boston City Council to override Mayor Michelle Wu\u2019s veto of the budget, which will\u00a0 require a two-thirds majority vote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Excerpt from \u201c<\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2023\/06\/28\/opinion\/letters-to-the-editor-boston-city-council-mayor-wu-budget-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><i>Boston Needs a Non Police Community-Based Mental Health Crisis Response<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>\u201d by Emy Takinami and Husain Rizvi:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the murder of George Floyd and the killing of Breonna Taylor by police in 2020, communities across the country brought the mass movement of abolitionist, non-carceral approaches to public safety to the forefront of local and national politics. Three years later, the need for such a movement and the movement itself persist, as evidenced by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whdh.com\/news\/authorities-id-man-killed-in-officer-involved-shooting-in-cambridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three police killings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2023\/02\/06\/easton-shooting-officials-identify-marianne-griffiths-woman-killed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Boston area<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necn.com\/news\/local\/district-attorney-investigating-police-shooting-in-springfield\/2935528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the powerful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jun\/24\/atlanta-cop-city-referendum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movement to stop \u201cCop City,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a police and fire department training center, in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community organizers have turned their attention to non police responses to mental health crises as one area of community-driven public safety. Since 2015, more than 6,000 people have been fatally shot by police, and of that number, 23 percent were experiencing or perceived to be experiencing a mental health crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non police crisis response models are being implemented in cities across the country, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandca.gov\/projects\/macro-mobile-assistance-community-responders-of-oakland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oakland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/denvers-mental-health-approach-low-level-911-calls-helped-reduce-minor-rcna32659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denver, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/07\/23\/1019704823\/police-mental-health-crisis-calls-new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
