Her appointment follows the tenure of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/ellen-devoe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Ellen Devoe<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was recently named <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/prof-ellen-devoe-named-associate-dean-academic-affairs\/\">associate dean of academic affairs<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over her 16 years at BUSSW, Professor Hahm\u2019s research, teaching, and mentorship has had a significant impact on social work in the SSW community and beyond. Her research focuses on equitable health, with a concentration on health risk behaviors among Asian-American women, and she has developed both theoretical frameworks and real-life culturally-grounded intervention programs to help this population, including <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AWARE<\/a><\/span> (Asian American Women\u2019s Actions in Resilience and Empowerment) and Youth AWARE. Both programs have now been implemented in schools and colleges to highlight the culturally specific struggles faced by Asian-American women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Hahm received the Outstanding Research Mentor Award from the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) at Boston University and an innovator\u2019s award from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asianwomenforhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asian Women for Health<\/a><\/span>. Describing her work in this area, she says, \u201cBeing a woman, Asian, and a person for whom English is a second language, I face many challenges. But I turned these disadvantaged social positions to advantages in academia. Countless students who care about Asian American health have come to me to build research on this under-researched area. Our publications on this topic have become some of the most cited and influential works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Hahm has been awarded grants by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Institute of Mental Health (NIH)<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation (NSF)<\/a><\/span> and serves on the editorial board for renowned journals including: the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. And she has authored approximately 70\u00a0 peer-reviewed journal publications and given over 250 professional talks on the local, national and global stage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work has been featured in numerous media outlets including National Public Radio (NPR), USA Today, Boston Globe, Washington Post, WGBH (Boston&#8217;s NPR).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProfessor Hahm\u2019s continuous history of securing external funding from numerous sources such as NIH and NSF among others, will serve to strengthen our schools\u2019 research enterprise.\u00a0 We look forward to her leadership in this new role,\u201d said Dean Jorge Delva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the associate dean of research, Professor Hahm will guide all areas of research at BUSSW, including providing support for faculty researchers, identifying funding opportunities, organizing the School\u2019s Research Seminar Series, and assisting faculty with proposal development and grant management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/hyeouk-chris-hahm-lcsw\/\"><b>Learn More About Professor Hahm\u2019s Research<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Hyeouk Chris Hahm, an expert researcher and faculty member, has been named\u00a0 associate dean for research at BUSSW, beginning July 1, 2022.
