{"id":51796,"date":"2021-02-19T18:05:05","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T23:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/?p=51796"},"modified":"2021-02-19T18:08:13","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T23:08:13","slug":"remembering-deborah-menashi-1934-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/remembering-deborah-menashi-1934-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Deborah Menashi (1934\u20132021)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah Menashi, a beloved social work educator who began her teaching career at BU\u2019s School of Social Work (BUSSW), passed away on January 19, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUSSW colleagues \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/melvin-delgado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Melvin Delgado<\/a>, Millie Flashman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/betty-j-ruth-lcsw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Betty Ruth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/ken-schulman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Schulman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/gail-steketee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dean Emerita Gail Steketee<\/a>, Lee Staples, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/trudy-zimmerman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trudy Zimmerman<\/a> \u2013 remember Menashi as a professor with a wonderful sense of humor, high standards, and a gracious inclusiveness; an excellent teacher, advisor, and social worker who was valued deeply by many.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philanthropist and activist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2020\/activist-and-bu-alum-barbara-lee-has-a-mission-to-see-a-woman-in-the-oval-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barbara Lee (SSW\u201984)<\/a>, a former student of Menashi\u2019s, remembers the role Menashi played in her formative years at BUSSW:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI first met my beloved professor Debbie Menashi when I went back to graduate school part-time, as a married mom in the late 1970s and early 80s. Debbie became an important role model, mentor\/cheerleader and personal friend to me,\u201d says Lee. \u201cTaking Debbie\u2019s classes over multiple years opened my eyes to the depths of gender inequality at a time when these topics were not part of the mainstream dialogue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menashi began teaching at BUSSW in 1970 after receiving an undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in 1956 and an MSW from Smith College in 1958. She taught at BUSSW in the Human Behavior department for seventeen years, including time serving as chair, before moving on to teach at Boston College, Smith College and Southern Massachusetts University. Menashi was also a clinical social worker \u2013 an LICSW \u2013 with a mental health counseling practice in Lexington, Mass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDebbie was highly intelligent, exceptionally outspoken and deeply inspirational,\u201d says Lee. \u201cShe was an important intellectual leader and will always be in my heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deborah Menashi, a beloved social work educator who began her teaching career at BU\u2019s School of Social Work (BUSSW), passed away on January 19, 2021.
