{"id":39656,"date":"2019-01-08T09:49:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T14:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/?p=39656"},"modified":"2026-04-07T17:38:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T21:38:31","slug":"cader-eoea-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/cader-eoea-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"CADER Receives Grant Renewal to Confront &#8216;Single Largest Unaddressed Public Health Threat in the 21st Century&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ssw\/files\/2019\/01\/adult-aged-aging-1305302-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39660 size-large\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER)<\/a> at BUSSW will use grant funding to train providers across Massachusetts who work with individuals living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementia.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following significant positive results from their first training of healthcare workers across Massachusetts that concluded in June 2018, BUSSW\u2019s CADER has received a grant renewal from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA), funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Services\u2019 Administration for Community Living, The renewal calls for CADER to train an additional 100 healthcare workers across the Commonwealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new funding comes on the heels of a recently passed law in Massachusetts that calls Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia the \u201csingle largest unaddressed public health threat in the 21st century.\u201d The bill, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed in August by Governor Charlie Baker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, requires healthcare workers in the state who treat adults to undergo training in diagnosing Alzheimer\u2019s disease and treating and caring for people with dementia before they can obtain or renew their licenses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith the passing of this new legislation, the state of Massachusetts is making Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia care a priority in order to address the needs of a\u00a0rapidly aging population,\u201d said Bronwyn Keefe, director of CADER and research assistant professor at BUSSW. \u201cAfter seeing improved outcomes from our previous efforts, we\u2019re looking forward to training additional healthcare workers across the Commonwealth to respond to the changing landscape of health and long-term services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CADER\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cader\/browse-catalog\/course-descriptions\/alzheimers-disease-and-other-dementias\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides health and human service workers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to identify potential cognitive impairment or dementia in its early stages, refer those exhibiting symptoms for screening, and communicate with individuals with dementia. The program also educates providers on how to connect impacted individuals with available home and community-based services that best meet the needs of a family caring for someone living with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease or related dementias. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past year, CADER reported noteworthy outcomes among the 200 people trained at the conclusion of the course: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">133.3% increased competency in understanding the core criteria used for diagnosing dementia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">118.2% increased competency in describing effective person-centered communications strategies to use with people with dementia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">92.9% increased understanding of the stages of Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76% increased awareness of resources and interventions that can assist caregivers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EOEA will begin enrollment in January and will identify workers across the Commonwealth who are eligible for participation under this grant. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cader\/browse-catalog\/course-descriptions\/alzheimers-disease-and-other-dementias\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available to all health and human service workers across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CADER\u2019s efforts to equip those working with older adults with the necessary skills and competencies extend across the U.S. Earlier this year, the Center announced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/new-grant-for-bussws-cader-expands-state-of-the-art-behavioral-health-training-for-professionals-who-work-with-older-adults\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grant to train healthcare workers in Florida and Illinois<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more about CADER\u2019s workforce development programs at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cader\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bu.edu\/cader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER) at BUSSW will use grant funding to train providers across Massachusetts who work with individuals living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementia.
