{"id":19913,"date":"2014-12-11T13:53:05","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T18:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/?p=19913"},"modified":"2017-07-27T09:24:29","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T13:24:29","slug":"initiative-on-cities-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/initiative-on-cities-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Daily Free Press: &#8220;Initiative on Cities Addresses How Cities can be Inclusive&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/ssw\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-11-at-1.41.44-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ssw\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-11-at-1.41.44-PM-650x243.png\" alt=\"Initiative on Cities \" width=\"650\" height=\"243\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19914 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-11-at-1.41.44-PM-650x243.png 650w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-11-at-1.41.44-PM-768x288.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2014\/12\/Screen-Shot-2014-12-11-at-1.41.44-PM-1024x384.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Phillipe Copeland, Assistant Professor and Director of the Dual Degree Program in Social Work and Theology,\u00a0joined three other expert panelists for &#8220;The Inclusive City&#8221; seminar, hosted by the Boston University Initiative on Cities\u00a0On December 4, 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;An inclusive city is a racially just city,&#8217; [Copeland] said. &#8216;It\u2019s a city where there are procedures by which the distribution of benefits and burdens of citizens is made according to quality, merit or need and not white supremacy \u2026 that\u2019s how you know an inclusive city when you see it.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Copeland said an inclusive urban society couldn\u2019t exist with the current mentality that justifies dehumanization and police violence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;I have a 6-year-old son, and he sees police the way he should see them, as heroes,&#8217; he said. &#8216;Who is responsible to make sure his trust isn\u2019t violated? I have to teach him how to tolerate with law enforcement.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Daily Free Press&#8217; Mina Corpuz <a href=\"http:\/\/dailyfreepress.com\/2014\/12\/05\/initiative-cities-addresses-cities-can-inclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> approximately 40 faculty, students, and residents in attendance. Corpuz also notes the number of passionate attendees who engaged in the seminar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Shannon Johnson, 23, a BU alum and resident of Jamaica Plain, said she learned better ways to foster the feelings of inclusiveness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;What I took away is that there are ways to act now instead of just being uncomfortable,&#8217; she told Corpuz. . &#8216;People need to gather together and show compassion, humanity and solidarity.
