{"id":62871,"date":"2023-05-03T14:23:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T18:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/?page_id=62871"},"modified":"2026-04-06T16:42:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T20:42:28","slug":"equity-inclusion-committee","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/about\/equity-inclusion\/equity-inclusion-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Equity &#038; Inclusion Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Our Equity &amp; Inclusion Committee leads our community in promoting and centering racial, economic, and social justice, including utilizing an intersectional lens to understand how ethnicity, class, gender, disabilities, LGBT issues, and other lived experiences impact social work. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>A dedicated group of faculty, staff, students, and alumni work together to promote engaged conversation, collective learning, and community activities focused on equity, inclusion and anti-oppressive practice for our entire community.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Our History<\/h2>\n<h4>Social Justice Learning Communities<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018\u20132019, close to 100 BUSSW faculty, staff, and administrators participated in an internal initiative to improve our teaching and learning around racial and social justice. The cohorts had three primary goals:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To offer education and training around racial \/ social justice to all members of our BUSSW community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To develop shared organizational language, analytic frameworks, and practice around racial \/ social justice as applied to social work education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To apply our shared framework and language to our relationships with all members of the BUSSW community, with the aim of further improving our instruction and classroom learning environments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first year, each cohort met monthly for 90-minute sessions to discuss and apply learning materials to current challenges at our School and in their personal lives. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project expanded to include ongoing cohort sessions for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part-time lecturers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-campus and online advisors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facilitators<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff and administrators<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our hope is that undergoing and continuing this process together will build collective understanding, helping us to communicate clearly with one another, develop and analyze strategies for improvement, and identify points of unity and difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Colloquium<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A school-wide event was held in Fall 2019 to examine the Smith College School of Social Work\u2019s 25-Year Antiracism Commitment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What does it mean, how has it been experienced, and what can BUSSW learn from this?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Dean Names Inaugural Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the appointment of the inaugural associate dean of Equity and Inclusion in July 2020, the committee began a series of important initiatives including developing a transformative justice process for the BUSSW community and creating a 5-year plan for addressing Equity &amp; Inclusion at the School.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Social Justice Learning Labs<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly lunch and case consultations open to all faculty, staff and administration with student participation. Participants are encouraged to bring issues\/questions relating to social justice in their classrooms and throughout the broader BUSSW community. The labs are an opportunity to apply the knowledge we are gaining to real situations that can deepen our shared commitment to this work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Social Justice In and Out of BUSSW<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new committee that highlights social justice events in the larger community including housing, healthcare, police brutality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty received a grant to review\/update all foundation year syllabi for social justice content.\u00a0 The project included input from students who were hired to assist department chairs with updates to improve syllabi and incorporate relevant social justice content informed by the review.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Social Justice Circles<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These sessions are open to all members of the BUSSW community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Monthly Field Education Liberation Health Seminars<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begun in Fall 2020<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/about\/equity-inclusion\/\">Learn more about E&amp;I initiatives here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Equity &amp; Inclusion Committee leads our community in promoting and centering racial, economic, and social justice, including utilizing an intersectional lens to understand how ethnicity, class, gender, disabilities, LGBT issues, and other lived experiences impact social work.
