{"id":394,"date":"2010-10-25T10:57:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-25T14:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/alumni\/jones\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T16:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T20:56:20","slug":"jones","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/news-events\/jones\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>We present The Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health each year in honor of Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones, featuring the most influential speakers in the urban health space.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38514\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/ssw\/files\/2018\/11\/hubie_jones_wbur-587x636.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"271\" class=\"wp-image-38514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2018\/11\/hubie_jones_wbur-587x636.jpg 587w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/files\/2018\/11\/hubie_jones_wbur.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hubie Jones, Courtesy of WBUR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones (\u201957), who served as the School of Social Work dean from 1977 to 1993, helped shape Boston\u2019s civic landscape for over forty-five years, playing an integral role in community organizations throughout Boston and within the city\u2019s African American population.<\/p>\n<p>As associate and executive director at Roxbury Multi-Service Center in 1967, his Task Force on Children Out of School (now Massachusetts Advocacy Center) published the report<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Way We Go to School: The Exclusion of Children in Boston<\/em>, which led to the first-in-the-nation enactment of two landmark laws that focused on special education and bi-lingual education.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Jones received the Purpose Prize, a national honor awarded to select individuals over 60 carrying out encore careers and using their skills and experience to make a difference in their communities and the nation.<\/p>\n<h5>New Scholarship Fund Introduced in 2024<\/h5>\n<p>The Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones Scholarship Fund was established by BU Board of Trustees member and Professor Emerita Cassandra Clay SSW\u201979. It honors Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones\u2019 commitment to urban social work and his impact on generations of BU School of Social Work students and the Boston community. This scholarship will support macro practice students with a demonstrated interest in urban social work. Every donation to this fund moves us closer to our endowment goal of $100,000.
