{"id":30674,"date":"2017-04-19T13:31:05","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T17:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/?page_id=30674"},"modified":"2026-04-06T14:36:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T18:36:14","slug":"transfer-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/admissions-financial-aid\/msw\/transfer-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Transfer Students &#038; Credits"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Transferring from Another School of Social Work<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We accept a limited number of transfer students each year.<\/li>\n<li>A student who is enrolled in another graduate social work program accredited by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cswe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Council on Social Work Education<\/a> may apply for transfer-student status equal to a maximum of one half of the total credits needed for graduation from the BUSSW.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must be in good standing with the school from which they are transferring and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer students must meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/admissions-financial-aid\/msw\/requirements\/\">BUSSW admission requirements<\/a> and application deadlines, and should address their request to transfer in the personal statement.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, a letter of good standing is required at the time you submit your application. This should come from the dean\/director (or their designee) of the school of social work from which you wish to transfer after you&#8217;ve completed your coursework.<\/li>\n<li>Applications are first reviewed for admission. In addition, academic credit is not given for asynchronous courses, life experience, or previous work experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>** Petitions\/material submissions for transfer credits for graduate social work or other graduate courses are to be submitted after acceptance and before matriculating into BUSSW.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><b><span>Transferring Credits <\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span>From Another School of Social Work\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Transfer credits may be awarded to individuals who have taken social work courses as a non-degree student at any school of social work.<\/li>\n<li>Up to 9 credits may be received for courses taken on a non-matriculating basis, so long as the credits were received from an accredited graduate school of social work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b><span>From Another Graduate Program (Non-Social Work Programs)<\/span><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Transfer credits may be awarded to individuals who have taken courses in a graduate level program that is not social work.<\/li>\n<li>Up to 6 credits may be received for courses taken on a matriculating or non-matriculating basis in another accredited, non-social work graduate program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>** Petitions\/material submissions for transfer credits for graduate social work or other graduate courses are to be submitted after acceptance and before matriculating in the BUSSW.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: Credits which have been applied to a prior degree cannot be transferred. In addition, academic credit is not given for life experience or previous work experience.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h4>Course Waivers<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Incoming students with exceptional prior course background in BUSSW foundation course areas may take a waiver exam for SR 743 Research I.<\/li>\n<li>Waiver exams must be completed prior to starting classes.<\/li>\n<li>The waiver exam policy does not apply to the advanced curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transferring from Another School of Social Work We accept a limited number of transfer students each year.
