My name is Shawn and I am a Dominican male, born in the US. I am originally from Providence, RI, but have been a resident and student in Boston for the past 8 years. I have graduated BU with a BA and MA in Psychology, so I feel I am a terrier through-and-through. My decision to return to school and get an MSW was due to my experience as an in-home clinician for two years. During this time, I worked alongside many individuals from different disciplines and practices, but the social work framework was what really stood out to me. Looking at individuals in the different systems they interact with resonated with me a lot, because individuals behave differently depending on their context, and not solely because their biology/genes/chemical make-up. As I have gone further in this degree program, I am finding that I love the interaction between the “clinical” and “macro” lenses and feel that I am destined to be more than a therapist working with the systems that my clients are involved in; I can also help to change the oppressive systems themselves. When I am outside of the social work realm, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, trying new foods, traveling, and dancing!
