I decided to pursue social work because I knew that I wanted to attack the most pressing issues regarding health and illness in American society, and social work training would broaden my understanding of the challenges that people face when seeking healthcare. Social work encourages professional practice informed by life experiences, and being able to use my own healthcare encounters to guide my studies is invaluable. I applied to BUSSW as a clinical student, but I realized that macro social work was where I belonged. The American healthcare system is structurally complex, and that’s what we learn as macro social workers at BUSSW. As a scientist I was concerned about changing fields, but the macro social work program has encouraged me to apply those skills to thinking about social work issues.
Outside class I am involved in Student Org and macro student affairs. I travel to campus from Providence RI via commuter rail, which is great for finishing readings and the occasional nap.
