Excerpt from “Healing the Cultural Betrayal of Black Women & Girls with Dr. Jennifer Gomez” with host Lisa Danylchuk:
So finally, we’re lifting the cloak of shame and saying, ‘You can have loved ones. You can have a made family. You can be family-oriented. And if the family that you are raised in is one that’s abusive, you can choose something different.’ That message from the book was received well, but I was very afraid it wouldn’t be. Hearing that it was validating for folks and for black women was really, really nice. It’s so powerful to get that feedback, because we talked about dissociation and how it’s such a powerful protective tool. And when we start to lift that cloak of dissociation or shame, there’s a lot going on under there.”
